Ahhhhhh. More Golem packaging porn. Thanks, Denis.
Hey, has anyone else noticed how much some of the slower Golem songs sound like Fast Man Raider Man? But not in a bad way.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Definately. I've also been hearing hints of River Euphrates and I'm Amazed and so many other sounds scattered throughout Frank's celebrated (by us) back catalogue. I'm finding Pixies, Black Francis and Frank Black all over this record. |

Which for me makes it the most representative record for him as a solo artist. And also one of the very best records.
It's pretty damn awesome, but I don't know if I'd call it very representative, IMHO. It synthesizes a few Black ideas into a totally new experience, but it's unmatched in the catalog to my ear. To that end, I wouldn't recommend it to someone for their first FBF experience, to the uninitiated, it would probably sound a little... opaque.
I agree it is superb, though.

A word for all six of The Golem Themes. They really add to the feel of the album and their dreamy to-fro rhythm really says Golem to me. I love how the main body of songs is interspersed with themes and reprises, preventing me from getting an all too quick handle on the album and keeping burn out at bay. Not just that, they're all great musically.
Bad News Theme (on the dvd soundtrack but not on the studio discs) is indispensible IMO so I made an audio rip from the dvd and added it to the studio disc. It picks up neatly after track 5 The Maharal and precedes track 6 Miriam and Florian (just as it does in the movie).

I just love Duane Jarvis' guitar on Makanujo - that deep surf/country tone and restrained but immensely effective playing. The lead on the Flower Song is one of the best lead guitar tracks i've ever heard. This album is a great tribute i think. |

Jarvis's lead on Miriam and Florian is phenomenal, too.

Wow, just noticed the existence of this Golem for the first time 'cause I'm travelling for this year.. Ordered it right away, hopefully there is one more left! 500/500 would be cool!

Der Golem #289 arrived in Berlin this week!
Customs charged another 23,45€, that was a bummer. But with the USBs there is a lot of new music to keep me happy. |

I'm so glad you guys overseas are finally getting your GOLEMs. Mine took 6 days to arrive after it went on sale, and I was bitching and moaning about the wait...I feel stupid now, knowing SO many people here have just finally got it or are still waiting for it. I don't know how you dealt with that! I would have come out of my skin by now. Anyway...enjoy! You're gonna love it!

I'm really enjoying the production on Der Golem. Even on my computer it's sound is so full. EDF has great ears. I planned on listening to this at a lowish volume but keep turning it up instead.

I've been remiss in joining in the reporting. Heretofor I atone.
Boxset 107. Arrived at Islip, Long Island, New York State, on the second day of reported receivals on this board(sorry, too lazy to look back and check). Enamored ever since.

I've tried to put a link in my sig, but for some reason I can't make a sig. I have it written in the sig box, and i clicked submit... |

If you watch the video on blackfrancis.net of him signing these things, they were just stacks of 8x11 (or whatever) heavy paper. They must have cut them afterward, and told him just sign kind of under the title. He was bullshiting with The Bureaucrat the whole time so I think he was kind of all over the place on a couple. The label probably had to cut a few of them oddball (pun) to compensate.

Every track on this double album is great but I've had a pretty much consistent favorite from the start; Stars. It's deceptively simple but has this busy rhythm, ducking and diving and dodging, like when you're trying to rush past people on a crowded street. I love how Duane Jarvis doesn't try and show off or distract on his solo. He shows really good judgement throughout. I hadn't really taken notice of DJ's past contributions I think because he's not a flashy lead player but that style really adds to The Golem; Less is definitely more. I'm really starting to appreciate some of the eulogies now. He'll obviously be sorely missed. Sorry I'm late.
