Ok so we know that music lifts the mood, kicks ass, stirs up memories, is visceral, etc. What about the flip side of that good stuff? I can't listen to certain albums without hearing a "beep beep mental health alert!" go off (it's usually an entire album not a mere song).
It's never Frank, whose music always helps, heals, kick ass, startles with its intelligence. It's always Springsteen, who I've read has dealt with depression. I'll be fine mental health-wise but then I'll find myself listening to "Nebraska" five times in a row and pondering dark dark things (A good cleansing dose of Dead Milkmen makes everything better immediately). I don't know what to make of this but it's gotten me into trouble, especially with post-partum depression, which is the last thing guys on a music forum wanna think about or relate to.
I wonder if I'm already in the dumps and the music brings intensifies it or if I'm fine and the music brings on the low feeling.

What about them? Bummer or yay? For me it's the latter -- Green is the Colour, Summer of 69, Fat Old Sun, Grandchester Meadow...all upliftingly brilliant.

Some of their songs are indeed uplifting, but they do have a kinda of grim 1970s thing going on!! In any case, they're brilliant.

My wife suffered rather severe post-partum depression. Pains me to imagine her being in that deep of a funk again.

Donovan always picks me up. "Colors" especially.
Jonathan Richman and Klaus Nomi are also great for a pick-me-up.
If I'm bummed out I normally try to make it worse via music. Normally look for droning ambient bits. Nice dirty tattered canvas there.

I dunno about music ever sending me into depression, there are some bands that help me along - riding the melancholy wave. Low are one band that do that.....if I'm feeling down, then Low, red wine and chocolate is perfect.

Maybe Aimee Mann's albums are depressing, but I don't get depressed hearing them, in fact I can't think of any music that brings me down.
I know Talking Heads usually puts me in a better mood.

i used to get accused of listening to 'funeral music' quite a bit....
a very ex-girlfriend used to comment that if i didn't want her to slit her wrists then i'd best turn my music off.
that was for bands like Dirty Three, Cat Power, Smog, Throwing Muses...
none of these bands depress me, but i can see how some of their music could be seen as not-particularly-uplifting.....

depressing music is so much better than happy music.
i'd much rather listen to the cure and elliott smith than really upbeat music. unless it was fb.

my girl who is a real sweetheart gets bummed out now and again - and she'll throw that in sometimes when I'm over there -
and all I can think is "good GAWD - just shoot me now!!! - no wonder you're so depressed!!"
I have much respect for their talent - not knocking them - they're extremely talented and great artists. But Good Grief!! That music is just about 1,000 miles away from where I am mentally. |

Ding ding, yes. Great mood + Springsteen's Nebraska = wacky thoughts. And don't get me going on Joy Division. I have not listened to them in over 20 years, unless it's Love Will Tear Us Apart unwillingly overheard at some party or something.

I couldn't listen to "Seven Nation Army" by the White Stripes for the longest time. I think I'm over it now. I love that song.
same with "Build Me Up Buttercup", and that's another pretty upbeat song.
I guess it's just that they remind me of happier times in my life which makes me feel worse about everything that's going on right now.
well I fell a thousand time better now, but a few weeks ago... not so much.
sorry, just digging holes inside of holes here.
(i'm not sure if that's a real expression but it sounded appropriate)

And the Smiths are to me as the White Stripes are to Kathryn as Wilco are to Floop. To me, the happiest songs in the world can be sad and vice versa - its all about mindset and/or when/where you first hear them.

you just reminded me: the smiths are another band that have some sad songs that make me really happy.

What a flat-out miserable song (with creepy fairground music and german lyrics as well).

The Libertines, it reminds me the climax of a long friendship and its ending, very soon after. Every time I hear them, and mostly songs like "what becameof the likely lads" or "can't stand me now", though I like it, it makes me bitter and angry.
This is depressing music to me. Wich is different from songs that makes me cry (Real Love by the Beatles, Happy Christmas by John Lennon...)

"The River" - Bruce Springsteen
The Morrissey track is just the most depressing song ever, just brings me way the hell down, even though it is one of my favorites. The Ani DiFranco song I don't even like, but it reminds me of someone in my past that I'm not too keen of. "The River" is one of the best songs I've ever heard, but holy shit does it bring me down. I remember they used it in "High Fidelity" at one point when Cusack was getting massively depressed over his ex. |

Well, I might have vomited because I was sick. I remember being very confused by the lyrics, though.
Actually, I just listened to the song again today and it STILL disquiets me a bit. Something about the line "all the sweet green icing flowing down" haunts me. And why is the guy making such a grandiloquent minor-key song about something so trivial as a cake? His voice is so high and quivery, too. He is insane. Is he singing from an asylum? Could he really not take it? What does "I don't think that I can take it" mean? Is he going to kill himself now over a cake?
Maybe I'm just over-analyzing a silly song, but it freaked me out at the time and it still kinda does.
Benji, I never checked out any of the compilations, though maybe I should have. I just got into Lisa Germano's Geek The Girl in the past couple of months. I haven't heard any of her other albums yet. Are they good? |
