By now we all well know that Old Black Dawing is about the biosphere project, but I'm more interested in: "I got a favorite story 'bout the tower of babel/some say it's true some say it's a fable" What the hell does this have to do with the biosphere? I find the tower of bable fascinating as a symbol of the (lack of?) importance of words and language (has anyone read Paul Auster's 'City of Glass'), but I just can't see how it fits in here. Does it mean anything at all or is it just a cool lyric?

Nevermind, the misses is a religious studies major, she cleared it up for me. Has nothing to do with language by her interp. Damn clever song.

I have contemplated this as well. Did the mrs say something about the wrath of God? If I'm not mistaken, God was angry because the builders of babel were trying to physically reach heaven by building the tower. I always assumed that Frank found the biosphere project analogous to the construction of the tower of babel, either by way of human vanity, or by rejection/rebellion against the limits of humanity. |

yup, more or else exactly what she said. The biosphere could be considered playing god and in building the Tower of Babel man was attempting to put himself on the same level as god. Old Black, apparently, is what people used to refer to the time before creation as. So, it seems to me that the song is about how the biosphere is going to piss off god and cause the apocalypse, which kind of suprised me because it always seemed that Frank thought the biosphere was kinda cool when he would talk about. Although, I guess the song doesn't neccesarily reflect his actual feelings on the thing. Really cool, cleverly writen song. Made the Mrs. think twice about all her anti-Frank speak.

Well, we know that he was raised in a religious atmosphere, and he seems interested in old testament era things (I'd assume maybe a little more than interested based on some of the more obscure things he's referenced: "have you heard about the heavenly angels? how they came to earth and met some ladies with whome they mated, and their young became giants, everyone") but as far as what he believes, I don't know if he's been outspoken about it.

Yeah, I think I remember seeing some comment about his being raised in a born-again Christian environment, but I've also seen him mention that his dad was a pagan, so I don't really know how it all fits together. I do know that he's a big fan of Larry Norman, whom he's called "the father of Jesus rock," or something along those lines.
