Thought this was a cool way for "straight" people to show support for the GLBT community. I have lots of G & L friends and family and have been "out" in my support for this community for some time but thought this was a unique way to show support of this community. I just saw the event on TV and missed tonight's event for here, but thought I would forward in case anyone else is interested.

You need to review your Dead Milkmen lyrics:
"Now Stuart, if you look at the soil around any large U.S. city with a big underground homosexual population - Des Moines, Iowa, perfect example. Look at the soil around Des Moines, Stuart. You can't build on it, you can't grow anything in it. The government says it's due to poor farming. But I know what's really going on, Stuart. I know it's the queers. They're in it with the aliens. They're building landing strips for gay Martians. I swear to God." |

let's talk about gay marriage. what do people think about the argument that gay people already have exactly the same rights as straight people? i.e. a gay person can marry a member of the opposite sex, just like a straight person can. their rights are not limited because they are gay; pretending you're not gay does not give you any more rights than if you came out.
i think this is a valid argument. i don't think rights should ever deal with such vague and subjective ideas like "love" (e.g. "the right to marry the person we love").
however, although valid, the argument is beside the point. i'm all for gay marriage. i think that men should be allowed to marry men and women should be allowed to marry women. i just liked the neatness of the above idea; i don't see it that current laws 'persecute' gays but just that they're out dated.

of course, the right to marriage isn't the only issue for GLBT equality..

why do they call it seven "straight" nights? if it was a pro queer thing they should call it something like....a full blown week of gay stuff or something, uh huh huh uhhhh, screw you beavis.

well, i don't know for sure but I am guessing that since there's already pride which is pretty much geared directly at the glbt community that this just kind of take the cause to a new audience. that's just my guess.

Yes, but not in Iran.

But if same-sex marriage were legalized, straight people would be able to do it as well, so wouldn't that be just as equal as what you're arguing here?

yes two same-sex straight people could marry, just as a gay and a lesbian can legally marry right now. what's your point?

My point is that you said gay people currently have the same rights as straight people, but even if you think that's true, they still would if gay marriage were legal. See?

er.. yeah. i have no problem with same-sex marriage. did you read the whole of my post? my point was that rights are already equal, they just need to be extended. for everyone. it's not a big point i was making. just a more proper way to think about it.

I totally think gays should have the right to marry. Let them be miserable like all the other married people I know.
