I'm quite happy I was able to see them. Of the two shows I saw, the Detroit one was better and well worth the trip (the decision to go being made about four hours before the show).
While the energy of the band was just a tad less (compare the tempo of a live Vamos from the 80s/90s to 04) I think they had improved as a live unit. The Vamos in Detroit was both amazing and long, Joey's solo a wonderful wave of noise washing over the audience. While I still enjoy listening to Pixies boots from their early days, it's mainly to hear songs that they didn't play live on the reunion or only played infrequently.
Which brings me to what I believe, are the only two weaknesses/mistakes/lost opportunities of the Reunion:
1) The Doolittle heavy setlists. While not a new complaint, I think it's worth re-visiting. Well, I would, I'm the one writing this. Anyway...it's a shame to think they never brought back: Rock Music, Velouria, the Happening, All over the World, Lovely Day, Motorway, Tony's Theme, and on and on.
Okay...I wouldn't expect them to have rehearsed their entire catalog (including Theme from Narc and Make Believe) but, it would've been nice to have a bit more of a variety in the setlists. Hey! At least they mixed them up, from night to night.
2) Their last show. I don't know if they'll ever get back together, but I think it would've been great if they'd done a definitive last show and just blasted through everything they at played during the entire reunion (including Into the White, Alec Eiffel, etc.)
A real good-bye show.
I could be wrong, but I think their Australia show was their last show and, it was okay...but for a band as epic as the Pixies, as amazing, as wonderfully catchy and abrasive and sublime, they should've ended with a truly incredible concert, unforgettable to those who attended and envy-inducing in those who could not be present.
Aside from that, the reunion was amazing. I never believed I'd get to see them live (let alone twice!) and that they would rock as hard as they did. We've got dvd's and bootlegs and fond memories.
Will they ever play together again? I don't know, but !THANK GOD! I was able to see them reunited.

Totally agree. It's a shame they didn't play more songs from "Bossanova" and "Trompe Le Monde". There are so many good songs that weren't played during that reunion. |

It's nice to see that FB still likes the songs that weren't played on the tour, like Motorway to Roswell and Break my Body. |

Arm Arm Arm: They did play Velouria, though I agree in general with point 1.

Re: Velouria.
That's right! I even saw it in concert twice and it's on a bunch of the bootlegs. Whoops!
I was overjoyed to see Motorway reappear with the Bluefingers. Or the Bluefinger band. Or whomever...???

During the 3 years of reunion, Pixies never played "Break My Body" and "Motorway To Roswell"... They didn't play them since their first split.
And now Black has confirmed there won't be a new PIxies disc, he plays these two songs with his group. To me, but this is my own and personal opinion, it sounds like a "FUCK YOU" to the other three Pixies...
What do you think about that? |

I thank the powers that be every day of my life (or close to every day) that I got to see the Pixies three times during the reunion tour.
One of those was front row at DAR Constitution Hall at Washington, DC. I got my girlfriend and I front-row seats (how I scored them, don't ask me). I was moved to tears of joy when they hit the stage and busted out with song after song. They sounded fucking amazing.
It's one of the moments that makes you think "I can now die happy." :) |

TwinCities.com - Second guessing.
The Pixies
The comeback: After spending more than a decade swearing they'd never re-form, the four original members of the Pixies returned to the stage April 13, 2004, at the Fine Line in Minneapolis. The pioneering alt-rockers then spent the rest of the year and much of '05 on the road. They've since continued to play festival dates and overseas shows.
The reaction: Mostly elation, at least at first. The Pixies broke up while they were still on the way up, and many folks discovered them after the fact (thanks in large part to all the bands that blatantly ripped them off in the '90s). That, and the older-and-balder version of the group played far more entertaining shows than they did back when they were younger and hairier. Enthusiasm has waned somewhat, though, as they've failed to record a new album.
The aftermath: A whopping five reunion-related DVDs are now available, including the documentary film "loudQUIETloud." Lead singer Frank Black also issued "Frank Black Francis," a collection of early Pixies demos and contemporary reworkings of the band's classics. Black released his new solo album, "Bluefinger," under the Black Francis moniker he used back in his Pixies days, and fans have speculated that its tracks were initially written for a new Pixies album (even though he has said otherwise).
StarTribune.com: Music: Re-running with the devil.
The Pixies
In 1993, Frank Black broke up his influential Boston alt-rock band by fax (ouch!), largely due to his rift with bassist/singer Kim Deal, who had spawned her own group, the Breeders, and a bad drug habit. After years of downplaying the Pixies, Black opened the door for 2004's reunion by playing the quartet's songs on a 2003 solo tour. As seen in the fascinating documentary "loudQuietloud," the band never really gelled personally on the tour, and drummer Dave Lovering (not Deal) needed rehab. But the concerts were a surprise hit musically and financially, leaving open the possibility for more. |

(Please, don't beat on me straight away for what I'm going to write)
Don't know about you, but when I compare pre-split shows and reunion shows, it's obvious that Pixies have lost a large part of their energy throughout the years, especially Dave's drumming and Charles's screaming. |

I never expected them to sound like they did back in the late 80's, I just wanted to hear those songs played live by the original members. Obviously some things are lost to time, but notes and chords will never change.
I never thought I'd ever get to see the day, and I'm so glad I did. Dave's Bone Machine intro, the timing of Something Against You, Kim Deal, Joey's Vamos solo, Charles Thompson effortlessly strumming those over familiar chords. I have seen this all. Lucky lucky me. |

Dave hadn't picked up his sticks in years and had to get back into practice, while you can't expect Frank to reach the same notes as he did then!

When rumors first spread of the Pixies reunion - I think it was around September of 2003 - the general consensus of the forum was that it was a very bad idea and a lot of people would lose respect for Frank if it actually happened.
I wonder if that's why so many people left the forum... |

i thoroughly enjoyed the 3 times that i saw them post-reunion. hearing vamos on that first night at the brixton academy brought a tear to my eye... 2nd night was right up the front and had the most exhausting gig experience of my life, and the 3rd time at the kentish town forum where i met a few people who'd been to see them when they played the same venue (then called the town and country club) was again totally different. 3 gig by the same band, but 3 totally different experiences... lovely.
but i am glad that they've stopped milking the cash cow now. time to move on...unless another 20 years time....
all i can say, thank god for polio! brian |

I saw the band four times. Preferred the last two shows, the Alexandra Palace gigs, because the sets were more varied, and the band seemed a lot tighter.
I'm just glad that they played together as a band, again. It would be nice to hear some new material, though. |

Ok, I was wrong ! Sorry. I searched the abbreviation BRA (for Brazil) on Bailey's Walk, and I didn't find it, beacause they used BAZ for Brazil...
But, really, it's a shame they just played one night in South America... Perhaps they'll come back next year? |
