I think Frank Black's first recording of the Doug Sahm song "sunday sunny mill valley groove day" is the best one. I actually don't like the second recording of the song he did, for the Honeycomb album. I also love "le cigre volant" and "humboldt county massacre". Those songs are great!

One of my top five FB songs. I've heard a few versions of him doing this song, and I just don't think he finally got it "right" until Honeycomb. What's truly great, though, is the original by Doug Sahm. Another good version is the one by the Bottle Rockets.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

my favorite version is a solo acoustic version from some radio interview - I heard it long before the official versions

At the beginning he says "I'm gonna try to see if I can make it sound good......"

He exclaims at the finish of the song with much enthusiasm - "Doug Sahm!! The King Of Tex Mex!!"

I've never liked the other versions as much cuz I was stuck on this one for so long - played it over and over

And here is that version if anyone else wants to hear it. I always liked this version too, but I think I do prefer the Honeycomb version overall.

The Catholics version destroys the Nashville cats version, in my opinion. I think it's gorgeous. It's a mystery to me why Frank wasn't happy enough with it to ever release it. That doesn't matter though as I've added it to my Snake Oil CD-R. In my collection, it's released!

The Catholics version has this magical dissonance by the end of the track just as "End of Miles". It feels very good.

Yeah, the SSMVGD version is marvellous. I love the vibe and reverb on that record.

As much as I bore of reading Nashville era bashing, the said version really is pretty weak in comparison.

I'm shocked to hear people prefer the Catholics version/s to the Honeycomb one. For me, the Honeycomb version is completely sublime, surpassed by very few songs ever. I wonder if it's a case of you like the one you heard first.

I think it's a case of the production and delivery of Honeycomb being not as kickass as previous and subsequent Frank.

I was the same. Always thought that version had some magic to it. Listened to it a thousand times through a tiny speaker on my dads computer.

Could we say the same about "The Man who was too Loud" ? The John peel version with Teenage Fanclub and the Catholics one... less exciting IMO.

By the way the first version of SSMVGD I heard was also the radio one, and it loved it!

I prefer the catholics version, but I prefer most SSMVGD-album recordings to other released catholics-songs. Like I will run after you, the SSMVGD-version is better, His Kingly Cave idem dito.
