there are very very few of these. some say that in utero is nirvana's best album. i'm not inclined to say that.
however:
Swans - Soundtracks for the Blind
that might be a good choice |

Some would say 'Closer' by Joy Division.
'Abbey Road' by the Beatles as well perhaps? |

Oops, it said final album not latest. I hope that Bluefinger is not the final BF record, of course.
I take another shot: Weezer, because the band actually died in a car crash after Pinkerton. The band that released Green, Maladroit and Make Believe are imposter's.

Does Elliott Smith count? Or is this just bands? I'm not sure if I'd consider Figure 8 or From A Basement on the Hill better or which one would officially be considered last.

I agree with Abbey Road and In Utero.
The Chameleons' Strange Times would have counted if they hadn't got back together in 2000.
The Smiths' Strangeways is a viable candidate but it is highly arguable.
I can't think of any others that I'd even throw out for consideration.

I did think of From A Basement On A Hill. As a posthumous album, we'd have to question the artistic vision of Smith and how it was corrupted by his death - which is not to say that there aren't good songs. I tend to look at unfinished/posthumously released albums as compilations, which is why I didn't say it myself. Plus, I like Elliot Smith (1995) better anyway. Man oh man, "Needle In The Hay". What a song.
Not a bad choice, though. |

I'd agree with Abbey Road, (though Let It Be technically came out after - Abbey Road is still considered their final album right?). I think "And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make" is one of the best final lines of a band's final song ever, and it sums up what the Beatles were all about.

Abbey Road was recorded after Let It Be, but released before, si? I'd argue with Basement as Elliott Smith's best though, I'd probably pick XO or either/or, but that's just me.

Abbey Road was recorded last. From what I've read, Let It Be was a horrible experience for all of them and they didn't want to end on such a sour note. Then they gave it to Phil Spector to fuck it up.

That's right, he added the strings to "Long and Winding Road" and screwed up the title track. McCartney hated it and this was the main reason given for the release of "Let it Be - Naked" which is based on the original "Let it Be" sessions. |

I don't see how that counts for two reasons: a) If a band only put out one album, you could apply any superlative to it -- Bollocks is also their worst, first, last, stiffest, least radical, etc. So IMO one-album bands shouldn't even be listed. b) You could also argue that Greatest RnR Swindle is a later album

Right.
Actually, I wasn't even thinking we should list two-album bands either. You can't use a superlative when it can only be compared to one other album. For example, Spiderland and Loveless are both great albums that outrank their respective predecessors, but it sounds misleading to say that a band with only two albums has a "best" album.
NOTE: I actually haven't heard Tweez, but I've heard it's godawful. Just throwing it out there for argument's sake.
HPM, have you heard End Hits? "Argument" is one of the best final songs on a final album ever, but I think End Hits or Red Medicine are better albums on the whole. |

End Hits is my second favourite, but for me The Argument is more solid overall. I thought it might be disputed, after all it is a close call.

The romantic in me wants to believe that they recorded the vocals all together in one take for "The End" and then walked out of Abbey Road studios and each went a different direction.
I'd also agree with "The Argument" by Fugazi, but I also hold out hope for another album.

Last night I watched the documentary on Charles Bukowski entitled "Born Into This"
I just now on Itunes pre-ordered The Cult's new offering due out on Oct 2.
Can you guess what it's called?
Okay, here's a hint.
