i'm trying to learn 'angel in the snow' by elliott smith on the piano and it says "asus4". does anyone know how to play that on the piano or is it just some guitar thing?

ok, i don't know much about piano but the notes on that chord are A, E and D. i'm sure you can work out a way to play that on piano. i've slowly converted many a song from guitar to piano.

On the piano it would be a (right hand) standard A chord (thumb on A, index finger on C#, ring finger on E) with your middle finger on the D between C# and E.
Hope that helps.
Also, just for future reference, whenever trying to make a sus4 chord, just start at the root of the chord and move up the appropriate scale (major or minor) until you hit the fourth tone, and then add that into the chord. Same goes for adding any note to a major/minor chord (last night i had to show someone an Amaj7b5 - you just make the a chord, add the major 7 and then move the 5th [usually the third note in a standard triad] down a half-step). I hope this wasn't too obvious/technical.

Brian, am I not correct in thinking that you have described an Aadd4 chord? A suspended fourth is where the third is, quite literally, suspended, so it's moved and you don't play the third at all. I may be wrong, my theory is rusty.
NB:- the term suspended in music actually comes from the fact that the chord sounds suspenseful, like in a film. This in term comes from the fact that, for example, someone suspended by their fingers from a high window, is a very suspenseful situation. This may or may not be true. |

yes, the piano chord chart i linked to is right. i'd say brian's was an Aadd4 too, cheesey. (x00220 on guitar)

okay does anyone know what this chord is? it has the notes - F, Bb, and D - and i have no idea if it's even a real chord but i'm writing a song and i want to write it down.

it's called a Bb (major). however from the order you've written the notes, it looks like the F is the bass note? therefore i believe you call it Bb/F

Music theory is surprisingly fun. For example, technically speaking a second inversion Bb like that is not really a chord? A chord must have an interval of a third/tenth/etc. between the lowest two notes.
I know, crazy.

That is a great song. Post it on youtube when you get it down, I'd like to hear a piano rendition of it... Elliott's music was amazing, his experience with piano and bass gave him an interesting view on his guitar playing, and it shows well in that song.

Bach wouldn't have considered it so, as the fourth interval at the bottom is a dissonance. However, in these crazy times anything goes, so I wouldn't worry too much.

i've been thinking about putting some stuff on youtube. Most of Elliott's songs are actually really easy, I can do Between the Bars, Say Yes, Twilight, 2:45 AM, Whatever [Folk Song in C], and I can almost do Waltz #2.

I did try singing louder at first, it sounded really bad. also, i have a sore throat right now, so I kinda can't sing any louder.

i just put up another song (where i'm singing louder  ) and i just realized my voice sounds shakey as hell! It's like um..... remember on the brady bunch when his voice was changing and he was singing? i sound like that. i think it's cos my voice is actually way lower than i was singing.

I actually have like 50 other songs I recorded (I recorded them on my mp3 player), but now I'm re-recording them on my Portastudio I just got, and I have at least 50 others that are just lyrics at the moment.
