For those of you with children, how did you prepare for raising your kids prior to their births? I think we might be having a little one and I am wondering if you all had any suggestions from your experiences that could help me be more prepared. I come here first for my baby advice.

Sorry, it seems there's no english edition of it. It's the bible of every expecting mother over here, the first edition dates back to 1970-something and it's updated every year. Anyway, my "preparation" to fatherhood consisted in reading this book. I don't think I ever thought about how I'd raise my kids, it just comes naturally. I made them a kickass FB lullabies compilation though, being concerned about their musical education.

Congrats to both benji and you. My kids are doing great, thanks.

Congratulations, though I can't help you with books to recommend. I read a few before my first daughter was born but can't remember the titles and the contents, from memory, were pretty much the same for each book - sorry.

Just prepare yourself for major upheaval.

It's not about books persay, I just want to know what was going through your mind and how you reconciled what was happeneing. I want to know what you were thinking, feeling, and what methods you used to cope. What did you do that worked? What mistakes did you make that you could have fixed in hindsight? The more info the better. I'm ultra-curious for real-life information. Books suck anyway.

congrats lbf! kids are great!! but you're life totally changes. so what i did to prepare was go on benders every night, hang out with the boys, get my daily frank black forum fix! just kidding...

i read a few books. i like to read. i like to prepare for things. i was a bit anxious..which i think is very normal. the best thing for me was to accept it and think of all the positives from having a new child. i always wanted a child but at the time i was like it didn't have to be right away. i was excited but not nearly as much as my wife. it really didn't hit me until alexis came out of mommy at the hospital. then i was completely blown away. it really is an amazing experience...one of the top experiences of my life. and now i can't even imagine a life without our little girl. the first 6 months were pretty hectic and a bit stressful..lack of sleep. change in routine. now that she is 2.5 things are pretty great. she's running around, dancing, laughing. nothing better than going into her room in the morning, she turns around, big smile, and says "daddy". this morning we were dancing together to the new pornographers album. now we're going to make a smoothie, then off to the cottage. bye!

I'm afraid I've got nothing.

I was really young when I had Diego and completely unprepared.
Thank god he was such a good baby (eg. sleeping 8 hours after 2 weeks) and that made it easier.
Each one after that was not planned either.
I didn't read many books and I've found that each one is profoundly different. Even in utero.
If they were all the same I'd be an expert by now.

I do agree with fu. To mentally prepare yourself you have to accept that your life is not quite your own anymore. You can't just do whatever whenever you want anymore. You have to be quite selfless at times. And babies turn into kids who turn into teenagers... Its lifelong. Of course the kids are great and there are alot of rewards but its also alot of work and worry and routine.

__________
Fuck off I got work to do.

Congratulations, Benji. You too, LBF, if the "think" part turns into "we definately are".

My experience is similar to Fu's. There wasn't much for me to do except watch in both amazement and slight fear as my girlfriend grew bigger. Those nine months slowly prepare you for what's to come. I just went with the flow, luckily I had a partner who did all the reading for me, and before I knew it I was at anti-natal classes, then I blinked and was handed some scissors and was asked, no, told to cut the chord. Still going with the flow.

I don't know about the others, but I was a little naive not realising how much an impact having a child would have on me and my girl as a couple. We were expecting very early into our relationship and what with a few changes of address, work and life we feel only now are we finally rediscovering some of what we had in the very beginning.

Kim said Motherhood equals mental freeze. Never forget why the two of you were/are together in the first place, and there isn't a certain way you're suppose to feel about the pregnancy, the birth, holding your child for the first time. Like Carolynanna says, each one is profoundly different. Just enjoy your own experience. You really don't have much choice about being a parent. It just happens to you. Then you talk to your child like your parents used to talk to you and you realise.....WHERE HAS THE TIME GONE.

Be prepared for routine. You won't need luck.

Definitely the worst, most tasteless post I've ever seen on any forum ever. I almost want to congratulate you for that honor.

There's a perfect explanation for the shit that I've been in. As soon as I find out, I'll let you know.

Are you kidding me? What forums are you reading, the My Little Pony Fanclub? Do you live in a cave or do you just feel the need to ruin another funny comment with some uncontrollable need to say something just to say something.
