nmh are pretty much all i've been listening to lately. i've worn out aeroplane, so i tried listening to on avery island a little more. i didn't like it at first, but it's actually really good. gardenhead/leave me alone and naomi are my favorites.

I like Holland 1945. It always gets me at "The only girl I've ever loved, was born with roses in her eyes, until they buried her alive, one day in 1945, with just her sister by her side."

I asked that same question. Darwin said its loosely based on Anne Frank. I get something new from the lyrics everytime I listen to it just about.

just looked it up on wiki it says:
quote: "conceptually based on the beauty to be found in the horrific experience of Anne Frank, as well as similarly overwhelming tragedies. During a live performance, Mangum said that some of the album's songs were based on recurring dreams he had of a Jewish family during World War II"
i don't hear that in any of the lyrics but, whatever...

If memory serves me right. This is one of the few CD’s I’ve picked up with recommendations from this Board. Needless to say these songs didn’t stay long on my MP3 player. Some songs, like ‘Holland 45’, ‘Ghost’ and ‘Untitled’ might have survived but I just deleted them all. That’s not to say all recommendations are bad. One of my favorite purchases in the last few years was recommended from this board. The Unicorns’ ‘Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone?’ The biggest reason I mention it along with Neutral Milk Hotel's is while the songs are on shuffle on my player I kept getting one band confused with the other. I realized the happy fun songs where the Unicorns and the sad boring songs where Neutral Milk Hotels.

by the way, am i the only person who thinks that after good ten minutes, the album becomes lousy, with just a couple of bright moments (like that untitled song)?
mangum is the worst singer i've ever heard. |

At work my itunes calls up the music files of other people on the wireless network (mostly undergraduate students). I enjoy browsing their files and what has stood out the most for me is how many people have NMH songs. Even people with predominantly crappy rap and pop seem to have NMH and often boots. Other "winner" is Tenacious D.
That being said, I still think it's a great album. |

I believe Anna's Sister wasn't at her side too, when she died although she wasn't far away.
Loosely based of course.
That record is amazing, one of the big ones. But it doesn't come to you, right away. In true lo-fi fashion, you really need to dig through it.

I've always thought it ref'd stillborn, deformed children preserved in large glass jars. "Pickled Punks"
Remarkably depressing pair of songs.

After reading this thread, I thought I'd better find out what all the excitement is about. I went to iTunes and sampled some tunes. Am I the only one who thinks the singer sounds unbelievably whiny? Should I give them another shot? At what point do they suddenly sound worth the hype? Cuz on first glance, I just don't see it.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

i didn't like his voice at first, either. i thought "this is a good album, but not that good." and now i see why people think it's so great. i think listening to the whole album in one sitting was what did it for me.

his singing is pretty odd. But Frank can get whiny too. I have no problem listening to whiny voices as long as there is some relief vocally or musically too. And there is plenty

If you were Canadian then you'd be familiar with the band Rush. Geddy Lee's voice makes this guy sound like freaking Tony Bennett...
Seriously though, I like how his voice sounds especially at its most whiny like in Oh Comely when he's singing Know all your enemies or even Let your skin begin to blend itself with mine.
I didn't know there was such a 'hype'. I don't know one person who knows NMH at all (except you guys.)
There are so many mouth, tongue, teeth references. Any interpretations?

how can people call his voice weird... its simple, raw and full of emotion... it is one of the best album ever... it flows excellently, u don't want to skip any track...
I also agree that the last track "two headed boy part 2" is currently my favourite....
How can you complain with lines like "Soft silly music is meaningful magical The movements were beautiful All in your ovaries All of them milking with green fleshy flowers While powerful pistons were sugary sweet machines"
.... brilliant...
isnt it about a boy (i.e. two headed, i dunno what two headed refers to, could be lewd) being in love with anne frank, although he is from a different time, i.e. 50 years later... interesting concept, that your true love has actually died and you will never meet her.. and the limitations (or lack of) time itself....

But I am Canadian, Carolynanna. And my last name is even the same as that of the drummer from Rush. (But I don't think we're related, especially because he pronounces our name incorrectly.) As for the "hype," I'm only referring to this thread.
Ok, so I have 17 downloads left with eMusic this month. I'm going to download one of their albums. Should I start with the older one ("On Avery Island") or the newer one ("Aeroplane")? What's weird is that those albums are both about a decade old. Reading this thread, I figured this was some new band. And listening to clips of them, I thought they were some sort of copiers of the Bright Eyes sound.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Avery has some good tracks (A baby for Pree and Naomi) but Aeroplane is in a different class (and quiet accessible). |
