I'm bored. Does anyone want to talk about these guys?
I heard some random song of theirs last night and I liked it. This morning I checked my CD stash to see if we own anything by them. I found Freak Magnet and gave it a spin during my morning commute.
It helped to get me going this morning. Lots of energy!
I've decided that I like them and I want to learn more.
Any Violent Femmes fans around here?

Oh yeah - I just picked up the DVD "Permanent Record" mainly because it's a show from the Boathouse in Norfolk, VA (R.I.P. - it was destroyed in a hurricane a couple years ago).
The show's pretty good, but I just wanted people to see the Boathouse in all it's sweltering glory. I saw a bunch of bands there in college (including Pixies in 1991 - also Luna, Crowded House, Sheryl Crow (opening from someone - no one knew who she was), the Sundays). Awesome venue back then. Old-ass wooden barn with low ceilings. I never got to see any of the legendary Fishbone shows there to my regret.
Besides the first 2 albums, you should seek out "ROCK!" which was import only I think, and has a ton of good songs on it.

Yeah I am. I only have Add It Up, but I love it. I have been thinking about getting more albums, but I'm a bit wary as I hear they can be a bit hit and miss within 'proper' albums.

I remember buying Freak Magnet several years ago and not liking it at all. It's odd how some music doesn't click until you're 'ready for it.'
I'd say I'm enjoying at least 75% of the songs on Freak Magnet today. I haven't heard the whole thing yet, though.

I've been on a little Violent Femmes jag lately myself. Last night I went to sleep to a Femmes playlist -- all their slow stuff. I think trobrianders quoted one of their songs the other day ("Good Feeling"), and that got them into my head.
One of my favorite albums in the world is "Why Do Birds Sing?" For me, it's just about as good as their first album -- and their first album is my favorite album of the '80s.
Oh, and I saw the Femmes with the Pixies a couple years ago. What a night that was.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Machine's the weirdest fucken song. So weird you forget to even laugh. Reminds me of a friend of mine who used to have dreams of saving the world, whatever that means. These days he's more like the guy from that Tom Waits song, What's He Building?
I once dreamt the Femmes covering The Holiday Song but then realised they were only playing Blister In The Sun. Nice to hear Gordon Gano is so in awe of FB. And FB playing the intro to Blister before a Pixies gig was a nice touch. Would love to put FB in a room with GG and Iggy. Might be a Fantastic Four kind of moment, well Three. They could form a band called the Oxymorons.
Do I remember right, is GG a Baptist minister now like his dad before him?

kfs, do you know about the Frank connection here, how he and Gano did the song Run together?

Cracks me up every time.
There's a video for "Machine" on that DVD, and it's as weird as the song.

The violent femmes, along with Frank Black and Moby, got me through high school. I've seen them a couple of times. Brian Ritchie was pretty pissed when Gano let Wendy's play Blister in the Sun for a commercial. He was talking about how Gano's karma had caught up with him and subsequently destroyed his song writing ability.
For the longest time I wanted VF to play my wedding, but now it'll probably be FB, you know? That's even if I get married. I'm still pretty young, and I don't want to rush anything becaue I'm always changing and developing. This is why I can't get a tattoo. You know what I mean?
Can anyone get me a copy of ROCK!
and possibly Freak Magnet? I'm willing to trade.

Thanks to kfs for starting this thread. I've thrown myself completely into my Femmes collection again, and I'm noticing things I hadn't before. "Freak Magnet" is a better album than I thought it was originally. What cracks me up is that I realized I was getting one of the lines wrong in the song "I Danced" ...
I had: "The words seem to only get in the way." It's really: "The worms eat only death away."
Maybe that's not funny. I thought it was.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Fool! That album's worth at least $8. Half of it kind of sucks, but the other half is really great. "Livin' A Lie" is my favorite VF song.

I saw them at a local faux Jamaican bar last year. Pretty odd but it was a great show. They had a lot of extra musicians with them, very interesting.

Oh, and the song Sweet Worlds of Angles is probably one of the most intense songs I've ever rocked out to. You know what I mean?

I'm glad about this thread! I hadn't listened to Hallowed Ground since high school probably. I totally forgot about Never Tell and I Hear The Rain...bunch of great songs on there!
Now I remember how I first got into the Femmes. An bunch of the cool kids on my track team were singing the 1-10 part of Kiss Off and screaming "For Everything Everything Everything Everything" on the the bus trip to a meet and I was like, "what the hell was that and why don't I know the words?" Picked up Violent Femmes and PIL's "Album" the next day. Thanks, cool kids!

i've been a femmes fan since about the same time as i got into the pixies. tho they've never meant as much to me as the pixies, they're still a fantastic band.
never tell is my favourite song.. love the little bass solo about half way thru...and then you hear someone saying "yeah!" after he's pulled it off....makes me smile every time.
downloaded a very good pro-shot concert from 1985 off dime a while back... it's a damn goodan actually. http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=128438 for those interested.
all i can say, thank god for polio! brian |

The show this past Saturday night at the Fillmore was amazing. I hadn't seen them since I was in high school. They played almost exclusively older stuff. In fact they played for well over an hour and there was only one song I didn't know. Jerry Harrison from Talking Heads also came out and did a song with them. They did all their "hits" and a few other songs that I was pleasantly surprised by: including Jesus Walking on the Water, Black Girls and Old Mother Reagan. They played very well and really seemed to be having fun. Tons of fun. Great show. |

This story hit the media today. .
Fresh off their latest tour, 1980s folk-punk favorites the Violent Femmes are headed for a surprise gig in federal court. Bassist Brian Ritchie sued lead vocalist Gordon Gano on Wednesday, saying he was deprived of credit for some of the group's songs and a proper accounting of its earnings. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, also accuses Gano of trashing the band's reputation by allowing its signature hit, Blister in the Sun, to be used in a Wendy's commercial. Gano, reached by telephone at his Manhattan home, called the lawsuit "a complete surprise" — especially since the band still regularly performs and just returned from a tour in South Africa. "We just played a really, really good tour," he said. "Since the early '80s, everything's really good. We're playing better than ever."
In the suit, Ritchie claims he founded the band in 1980, taking on drummer Victor DeLorenzo that year and Gano in 1981. [EDIT: True, but Gano had most those songs written before even meeting the others. - SnS]
After releasing a self-titled debut album, Violent Femmes, in 1983, the band gained fame with hits including Blister in the Sun,Add It Up and Special. It recorded at least 10 albums and toured the world at least a dozen times, the lawsuit said. "This action is the unfortunate culmination of an ongoing intra-band dispute between Ritchie and Gano over Gano's misappropriation and misadministration of Ritchie's interests in the jointly owned songs and assets of the band, misappropriation of assets solely owned by Ritchie, improper accounting and non-payment of royalties," the lawsuit said. [Lesson: Always carefully read over any paperwork before signing..]
The Wendy's deal was a buzz-kill for the band's fan base, the suit says, causing one fan to comment in an online blog that after hearing Blister in the Sun in a commercial, "My ears perked up. Then my jaw dropped. Then my heart sank." The suit seeks a ruling declaring Ritchie half owner of the band's songs and an accounting of past and future royalties and unspecified damages. [ So where's Victor's cut? Or is he just a tool to prove you had the name of the group before hooking up with Gano??]
Gano declined to respond to the claims in detail, except to say he wrote the band's songs with one or two exceptions. -
And there you have it....
