Right on. I wonder if that's some sort of kickoff to some sort of North American tour.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

I'll say no. I have no idea but I'll bet it's a one night event.
Not that I don't want it not to be...... |

These Oregon shows are just one more reason I'd love to live there. I have a buddy who lives in Salem, but he never goes to the shows. He's a minor fan -- I dragged him to a Cult of Ray show in Denver -- but not enough to care much for these warmup gigs and whatnot. I could have killed him for not going to the Lefty's show a few weeks ago. Anyway, I love going out to visit him. Driving the 101 between Portland and Eugene is one of my favorite things in the world. Tillamook cheese is also one of my favorite things in the world. I stopped at the Tillamook factory once on my way back to Eugene one Sunday morning. The ice cream is even better than the cheese. Oh, to make that a regular thing -- and see FB a couple times a year in tiny little barely known shows.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

I was at the Lefty's show and will probably need to head down to Eugene for this one, too. WOW Hall is a nice little venue. Not as intimate as Lefty's but it'll still be great.
My great Eugene story is that I went down there to see Sting, a few years ago, when he played on the U of O campus. While Sting was performing, I told my wife that I was going to get a drink and headed out the walkway. I almost bumped into a man and a woman walking in. The guy looked familiar but I couldn't place him. He gave me a smile, I smiled back and walked on.
Then, I realized, "Hey, that was Frank Black."
When I got back to my seat, I was telling my wife, "Honey, I just ran into Frank Black." This did nothing to faze her. Instead, she looked at me and said, "There's a couple behind us with a baby." I started realizing that she and I were living two different lives. So, I said, "Do you not understand I ran into Frank Black? You know, The Pixies?" She said something like, "Okay," and went on to say, "The baby is really cute." At that point, I decided to give up.
Since he had been walking into the same entry/exit I was leaving, I realized he must be nearby. So, I started looking around. Sure enough, there he was three rows behind me. So, I nudged my wife and said, "That's Frank back there." She looked back and said, "You mean the guy holding the baby?" Sure enough, we were both talking about the same person. Frank and Violet were there with the baby.
After the show, they were still sitting in their seats and people were stopping by to speak to him but I think none of them knew him. They were just checking out the baby and I figured that was probably a cool moment for him. As much as I wanted to go say something, I decided it was best to leave family man Frank alone and allow him to enjoy his evening. |

Having spent my formative years in Hillsboro (suburb of Portland) and now living back and forth between LA and SF for the past 20 years, I can say that I miss very little about Oregon EXCEPT Tillamook. I love me some cheese and nothing will ever compare to Tillamook (the ice cream is good too but they don't export that). |

Thanks for sharing, OMB. That's one of the coolest FB stories ever. And besides the cool coincidence, how great that Frank and Violet take their babies to concerts like that. You KNOW all those kids are going to be musicians.

Wow, good story OMB. I once had Tracy Chapman a couple rows in front of me at a show, but your story is much cooler.

I was in Eugene today at the Oregon Country Fair and noticed a WOW booth at the fair. I asked about the on-and-off listing of the Frank Black show in October, and the fellow at the booth had no idea about any of it.
He admitted that he doesn't know everything about their booking calendar, and he suggested I keep checking. Which I certainly will.
Keeping my fingers crossed... |

Seems like the date for the Sprout 10th anniversary thing changed to 9/21 - maybe the new date conflicted with something else for Frank?

On the web site it said: "Sprout City 10th Ann. Part II: Frank Black"
so, part one is something else. |

Hmmm. That link makes it look less like a Frank Black show and more like he'll be playing just a bit part. Anybody know more about this thing? I've got the OK from Mrs. Coastline to go, but I'd hate to travel all that way if he's doing just a few songs as part of some big show.

It's a relatively short trip for me, from Portland, so I'm not as worried about the length of the set. It does look like he's 'headlining', so I hope that means heile is right and we'll get a doozy of a show from him.
coastline, it would be an easier call if we knew when the man will be coming around on a proper tour. Anybody have any ideas? |

I just don't know. Based on what he said in his BBC Radio 1 interview last week, it doesn't sound like he'll tour -- Violet is pregnant and he wants to be by her side. So I'm thinking this is my shot this year.

A solo show would be unmissable. Always seem to be quite unpredicatable setlists. |

Well, the price isn't bad ($184 round trip from Denver). All I'd need is a ride to the show and back to PDX.

Regardless of what type of show (solo, band, whatever) I'm %99.9 sure it's a full set. And everyone who can come should as the WOW hall is a tiny venue. Not to mention one of Franks favorite places to play! |

i'm seriously considering going to this. how far is portland from hood river, anybody know? also, what's the realistic driving time on a friday long week-end seattle to portland?

you have a few different questions in there, shineoftheever. I'll do my best...
how far is portland from hood river? about one hour*
what's the realistic driving time on a friday long week-end seattle to portland? about three hours*
how long would it take to get from the airport to the venue if i arrived on at say 6:30pm if you mean the Portland airport, the trip to Eugene should be about two hours*
* each of these three routes can be very busy during rush hour, for example on Friday afternoon (3pm-7pm) and weekday mornings (7am-9am). Portland is not a huge city, but these highwayS can get congested.
hope this helps a bit. happy to offer more help if you're making this trip. (have extended the same to coastline.) |

yes indeed, shineoftheever, a great excuse to visit our lovely state, if ever you needed one.
the salmon will be running, frank/cis will be singing... good times.
hood river is a neat little town, rather touristy but a beautiful spot. |
