Eating lunch yesterday at the Pei Wei restaurant in Denver, I saw this kitty above the area where the soda machines and utensils are kept.

It looks a hell of a lot like this kitty:

What's the deal? Anyone know the story behind the kitty on the SMYT cover?

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

It seems like I read that it means good luck or something.

I'm not sure about the exact meaning of that kitty but you can find it in almost every chinese restaurants, it's supposed to bring luck or good fortune or something like that I believe.

Maneki Neko.

Echo Park, a member of the forum and part of the SMYT team said this:
quote:
I remember that Cat in the control room of the Hollywod studio they had set up in for most of last year. Not sure who put it on the steel, but Stan is pretty quick with his digital camera and everybody dug it.

Stan = Stan Ridgway
Echo Park = Eric Potter (backing vocals on Manitoba)

Thanks to Carl, too, who also is always full of good information. I love this post, from realmeanmotorscutor, in the thread Carl linked to:

I just saw one at the Chinese buffet in my town. I said to my friend, "Look! A Frank Black cat." She said, "Those things are everywhere. It's not A Frank Black cat." I said, "I know bitch, but when Frank takes something on it's his! I don't care if it belongs to some li'l culture or if Weezer used it first. It's his."

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

I eat Chinese quite often and I have never noticed a cat like this. Of course, I am not very observant about my surroundings. I will be on the lookout next time I am in a Chinese Restaurant.

It's not you I don't like

I saw one in a Thaï restaurant. Maybe it's a bouddhist thing. I am allergic to cats however, especially nearby chinese restaurants.

Maneki Neko. Japanese origin apparantly, although I'd bet it has Buddhist and Hindu equivilents.

Yeah, there's a kitty like this one in every Chinese restaurant here. It's supposed to bring good luck. Strangely enough, I had never paid attention to it until I saw one in Santa Fe - two thousand miles from my home - two years ago

Anyway, since frank black released this album it seemed his career took a new breath. he split with the Catholics, re-formed the Pixies, earned a lot of money and became more and more prolific. He found happiness in mariage and got children.

Death and rebirth.

The japanese style lucky cat might have been a positive symbol of changes in his career.

Don't know the origins of the cat but they're very popular here.
They're called "Zhao cai mao" which means cat that brings fortune (as in money not luck). The Chinese characters on the above cat are "bai wan liang" which means a million "liang"- liang being an old Chinese currency.
Business owners often put them in shops, restaurants, bars etc. as they believe it will help their business in becoming a success. It's definitely more of an earthly wealth thing rather than a spiritual thing.

I wanna get one with the lyrics to "Bone Machine" on the little thing the kitty is holding.

You're into Japanese fast food
And I drop off your Japanese lover
And you're going to the beach all day
You're so pretty when you're unfaithful to me
You're so pretty when you're unfaithful to me

You're looking like
You've got some sun
Your blistered lips
Have got a kiss
The taste of it like everyone
Uh-oh uh-oh uh-oh uh-oh

Your bones got a little machine
You're the bone machine

I was talking to preachy preach about kissy-kiss
He bought me a soda
He bought me a soda
He bought me a soda and he tried to molest me in the parking lot
Yep yep yep yep!

I make you pray
You make me hard
Your irish skin
Looks Mexican
Our love is rice and beans and horses lard
Your bones got a little machine
You're the bone machine

Uh-oh uh-oh uh-oh uh-oh
Uh-oh uh-oh uh-oh uh-oh

Your bones got a little machine

I guess the characters would have to be pretty small.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.
