For me: 1997
i was thinking the other days about how so many amazing albums were released in 1997. i think it is the most important year, musically, for me, ever.
1997 also signalled my first year of going to university so so many different stimuli involved there.....mainly girls and beer, but stimuli nonetheless.
anyways, amazing albums released in 1997:
Dirty Three - horse stories
Mogwai - young team
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - f#a#(infinity)
Sleater-Kinney - dig me out
Cat Power - what would the community think (was actually released in '96 but not in record stores in NZ until '97)
Blonde Redhead - fake can be just as good
those top 5 truly changed the way i looked at music in the most profound way since i first heard the pixies 4 years earlier.
and no year ever since has ever come close to the quality of releases. i often find myself struggling to compile a top 10 for years after this cause they're just so lacking (2007 however is an exception), but 1997 was phenomenal.
anyone else have breakthrough years?

I'll pick 1984. I turned 17 that year and really started to enjoy music for the first time. I had a decent part time weekend job and I reckon 75% of my earnings were invested in vinyl purchases. Still got most of them!

1975 was a very classic year. I've had or still have most of these in multiple formats. CD, Cassette, 8-track, and LP (the one 8-track was Wings - Venus and Mars). My year wins hands down.

I like many of the bands listed already, but I have never "been into music" that much.
So I am going to go with 2007.
It is the year I discovered Frank Black.

Slint - Spiderland (one of the masterpieces in rock music, and a groundbreaking "post rock" album. Jediroller said it came out in 1995, though. I think that's incorrect)
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless (two years of work, 18 recording engineers, and almost bankrupting their label really seemed to have paid off)
Talk Talk - Laughing Stock (amazing drones and amazing melodies. "Taphead" is fantastic.)
Nirvana - Nevermind (the first time in 10+ years when commercial music actually was pretty good. Far better than In Utero. I don't care what anyone says.)
Pixies - Trompe le Monde (The Sad Punk is one of the best songs, ever.)
I'm sure I'm forgetting one.
Mr. Biscuit Doug Head missed Bee Thousand, Jediroller missed Alien Lanes, and benji missed Zaireeka.

Actually, I can't say I own the Talking Heads album and have never even listened to all of the Sex Pistols first album, but I've always noticed that 1977 was an explosive year for punk and it's many variants.

I have all these records, plus Blondie's first LP, Richard Hell's "Blank Generation", "Rocket To Russia" (which is better than Leave Home)... and Bowie's best 2 albums (Low & Heroes). Oh, and Iggy's "Lust For Life". And Weather Report's "Heavy Weather". And Kraftwerk's "Trans-Europe Express"! 1977 ruled.
On the other hand, Elvis died in 1977, and France won the Eurovision contest. These were pretty bad days for music.

Yeah, I have Blank Generation and Rocket to Russia as well. Swell albums. 77 ruled! Star Wars came out then, too.
