Well this must have been discussed before, "Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing”, but how did you, and when did you, first make contact with mr. Black here.
I first saw him in my TV and was pretty blown away... 'was that headache video. I was so exited I had found something that I finally liked, I cried. I tell you, I'm a sensitive guy.
That was in 2003. June, 2003.

1988. Heard Gigantic on John Peel and it literally made me stop what I was doing and gawp at the radio. A few days later a friend gave me a tape of Surfer Rosa and that was it - my favourite band. |

1998. My brother had bought Surfer Rosa, and I was listening to it constantly. Then I went and bought as many Pixies CDs as I could over the course of a month. After that I moved onto Franks solo stuff.
{I just wanted to edit this because after much thought, I don‘t think it was 1998 when I first heard Surfer Rosa, I think it could have been 1999/2000. }

Bought Doolittle from a used CD store in November 1995. Bought up everything else over the next two months, just in time for a brand new album (Cult of Ray) and a show in Dallas in early '96. |

1993ish. My first Pixies song was the "Head On" cover on Trompe. A friend of mine had played it for me. He said it was a band that had just broken up. Though I really liked the song, I'm not sure I paid too much attention to the rest of the album at that point. Within a year, I saw the "Los Angeles" video on MTV and was really impressed. Bought that CD and then over the next couple years, it became one of my favorites as I listened to it while I rode my bike alone through some hills outside of town for hours and hours. It was like Frank became my friend on those bike rides. The DNA of those songs mixed with the DNA in my own body. The rest is history. I'm one of the uberfans now, and I had an orgasm at work on Friday when somebody pointed out the new songs on the blackfrancis.net site. And I shed a tear last night because I wasn't in Salem.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Around 1989/90, I remember my brother (who had heard Gigantic on the radio and thought "Wow, who's this?!") playing Doolittle, and I was struck by what I heard. It sounded so interesting and different and energetic. Then after that, I remember sticking it on sitting in my room drawing...some of it didn't quite register with me, and it was probably a little while later that I really got into them, and once I did, that was it. Of course they were on the verge of splitting at this point. I remember the excitement of getting the records-my brother had Doolittle on vinyl and Bossa on tape, I went and got Pilgrim and found Doolittle and Bossa on vinyl with the booklets in an indie record shop-at sale price, too!-and couldn't believe my luck (I also picked the Monkey 7" with a load of singles). I had all the European 12"s, except for Monkey, but then I found that second-hand in another record shop. Then of course there was Frank's first album, followed by TOTY, which was the last FB vinyl I got. |

Around 1997, high school, a friend who knew I liked nirvana gave me a tape of trompe le monde. I really liked what I heard, but didn't start buying everything the man (and Kim) released imediately. That only happened a couple months later, when the best of, Death to the Pixies, was released. I remember being really excited knowing that I would buy every album and all I had to decide was what to buy first: Surfer Rosa, Doolittle, Bossanova, FB, TOTY... |

Sounds Wave 3 EP, a music rag giveaway that featured the Purple Tape demos of Rock A My Soul and Down To The Well. There was enough there for me to know that something was definitely up. I rang my mate Mark and we got ourselves tickets for the Pixies and Throwing Muses gig at the Town & Country (the gig on the first Pixies DVD), that was May 88.
That gig was a central point in our lives as fans of music. Up until then we were listening to the usual post-punk stuff. Pixies led us out of that cul-de-sac. We were dead excited just on the strength of the two demos. But we still weren't prepared for what we heard that night in May. That gig was pure wish fulfillment. Never known a moment like it. That goes for Kristin and the Muses too whom I love in equal measure.
Have followed every moment since.

Bought Surfer Rosa after hearing Where is my Mind on a mixtape. A couple days later I saw the video for Headache on mtv and bought TOTY. I didn't figure out they were by the same fella for a couple days.

February 2007 i downloaded Nadine off of limewire. I loved it. But that was the only song on there and i had never heard of Frank Black or the Pixies. I was texting with a kfs (we recently reconnected)and I asked her if she had ever heard of Frank Black. I knew if anyone had ever heard of him, she would. She was so excited that i had asked and i am too. she has helped me get acquainted with more of his music. I am forever grateful to her for introducing me to the world of Frank Black and the Pixies. p.s. there is still a lot that i havent heard, but i am getting there. Spring 1994. My boyfriend saw the "Headache" music video and bought TOTY right away. He was very excited about Frank Black. Pretty soon he found out about the Pixies. He started playing Pixies all the time (starting with Surfer Rosa). I wasn't exactly crazy about it. I just sounded loud to me. After a while I became aware of Kim. I thought it was cool that she played bass and I really enjoyed her vocal parts. I realized the music wasn't always loud - sometimes it was quiet and pretty (often during the same song!). I decided I was a fan. We continued to listen to all the Pixies CDs and TOTY off and on for several years. Sadly, I kind of lost touch with Frank after Cult of Ray and Pistolero were released.
In the meantime, I became a HUGE They Might Be Giants fan.
and then.... 2004. I heard about the Pixies reunion and became more and more excited as the days passed. October finally came and I SAW THE PIXIES!!! Of course it was great!! All of this renewed my interest in Frank Black. I found 'Stupid Me' on Amazon.com and I liked it so I bought DITS and BLD. By Oct. 2005 I had gotten all his other CDs. He played the solo electric show in Nashville in Oct. 2005 (and I got to meet him). I joined the forum so I could share my story with people who understand.

1998. Summer time. I was thirteen years old and had been into the Pixies for the last year or so. I bought Teenager of the Year from Vinyl Exchange in Manchester (England). After a few weeks I was blown away, and tried to snap up anything I could by the man. Although many of my friends who got into him at that time have since been dissappointed by an album or changed musical tastes, the man has never let me down. every album offers something new, I hope he keeps making records for as long as he can, and I'm sure he will. |

In August of 2001 I saw Radiohead play in Boston. Inbetween songs at one point, Thom played some riff and crooned, "It's educaaational." When I checked out the setlist online later, I found out he'd goofed on a song by some band called the Pixies. Days after I bought a copy of Trompe le Monde and couldn't believe what a goldmine it was. Bought the rest of their catalog right away and by September I'd also picked up Frank Black and TotY. Had the full Frank discography by Christmas. Damn, that was an exciting time.
So, wow. I'm a fan of the man due largely to Thom Yorke. Never even really contemplated that until now...

This thread gives me chills. Especially trobriander's post. Yeah, we all realized something was up, didn't we? Something more than just "Hmmm, I like these guys" or "Wow, this is kinda cool."

2004 I think. Bought TOTY after listening to the Pixies for a couple of months. I can't say I first heard the Pixies on Fight Club, but it was then I realised I had to buy the rest of their stuff. 'Where Is My Mind?' just blew me away.
Quite a contrast to some of the 'old-timers', but it just shows that new audiences are discovering the Pixies and FB all the time.

Heard Bone Machine and Gigantic on McGill U CKUT sometime in 1989 (or was it 88?). Was immediately blown away. Bought the Surfer Rosa vinyl somewhere on Mont-Royal and that was it, I became addicted. Saw them in Montreal and Paris. Was the first to buy FB's Orange. Saw him on his first tour.
Got into serious gene-transfer business and I let down the scene somewhat. Bought TOTY and COR from Columbia (hehehe). Took time to get into them but I eventually did. Lost sight of the Man again and discovered FB&C whan they came into town. Bought it via mail order and from then on, I became self-proclaimed biggest FB fan of the east-end Montreal South Shore.

1991 I was at McGill University in Montreal and had tickets to see U2. Pixies were opening for them. Some friends I was going with were more into seeing the Pixies than U2 and loaned me Doolittle and Trompe le Monde.
I was listening to these albums constantly in the weeks leading up to the show. Since then, I've been really into Frank and Kim's work. I bought up everything they've done and had to buy multiple copies of Pixies albums as they got scratched/lost/stolen over the years. I just wish Kim would do more stuff. I really miss hearing her voice. |

It became a running joke with my friends that I was obsessed with The Pixies and FB. Still is. Although you're more likely to see Pixies/FB in the media now than say ten years ago, I still get a thrill out of seeing them in the press and on TV. |

i bought Doolittle used in 89 or 90 I think. Maybe earlier Hooked after that. Frank almost lost me with his first solo effort but then one day I was in Newbury Comics and me and this guy started talking about Teenager which had just come out. i picked that up and was addicted. I love Franks first solo album now. His stuff just takes a few spins sometimes. |

Gotta give most of the credit to my brother, shared a room with him and he was always listening to Frank, I had a copy of FB & the C's for ages and liked it, got Pistolero but didn't really get into it but never ventured further than that, then one day (in 99 i think), I spotted TOTY in a store and flipped over the back and realised I recognised 7-8 of the song titles from hearing them over the years, so bought it. A week later i found the Death To The Pixies (with the live disc). Within a month i had all the Pixies and FB stuff up to Pistolero (except for the orange album which i didnt locate for about another year) and its been a love affair ever since. And now Pistolero is my 2nd-fave Frank album!! After TOTY of course. |

I think it was about 1988 and highly likely to have been via John Peel's radio show.
Remember positively salivating before the Doolittle release.

1988, a friend of mine, Duncan, lived in the same halls of residence played me Doolittle. Loved it. Bought Trompe on release day, loved it. Devastated at the break up, but bought the Yellow album - pretty soon after release I think - and hated it. Didn't buy another album until DiTS, which was amazing, so I worked my back. Still found the yellow album hard to get into.

I know I've put this down before but I couldn't find it, so, here is what I think is a rather common story.
It was 1988 or 1989 and I heard a song on CBC's Brave New Waves (can't remember which one, maybe Debaser, maybe Levitate Me?).
I rushed to the store where they had 2 Pixies albums, I couldn't remember the name of the song I had heard so I (typically) picked the one with the topless dancer on the cover.
I shoved it in the cassette player and I was assaulted, I thought it was just about the worst music ever, sloppy and ill conceived. I listened all the way through and I couldn't decide which song Brave New Waves had played and I couldn't imagine what I might have liked about it.
It sat unplayed in the cassette slot of my car for about a month when I concluded that I must have missed that one good song for all the noise. Well, the first few tracks sounded a little odd, but really quite good, and the last few tracks were pretty awful.
So I played it again and I was in love. |

Round about ‘93 I accidentally channel-hopped into the “Cannonball” video by the Breeders, which blew me away and sent me off onto an AllMusic search of all things Deal, via, pre-internet days, a paperback AMG guide, and then on to the Pixies. Of course I bought “Last Splash”, and then “Surfer Rosa” and “Doolittle”. I didn’t get Frank at first, but after a year or so I circled back to my AMG to read about the significance of TOTY and then bought it. TOTY opened my ears to the pop-genius of it all, and then when I revisited Rosa and Doolittle I was able to hear it was my same TOTY guy, cloaked in rougher guise. From there I was hooked and sought out everything in the back catalog I could get. It was only with the opening notes of “All My Ghosts” that I got current with Frank, and it’s been a sleigh ride ever since.

think it was 93 or 94. my sister came back from university with surfer rosa and last splash. i was about 15 at the time and apart from led zep and the floyd, my musical taste amounted to being a big fan of dire straits. i remember thinking what the hell was this stuff, but something about it clicked with me. i used to get up early every day of the summer holidays so i could sit in the lounge, put the cd's on and listen to them for hours before anyone else woke up. ended up buying everything i could on tape, and the cult of ray was my first ever cd i bought. was actually not fussed about franks solo mwork until dog in the sand came out. actually i never followed to that closely, but was a rabid pixies and breeders fan. it's evened out more these days.

1988: sitting in the back of a friend's car, drunk, somewhere in Bavaria around 2 o'clock in the morning i heard "Where is my mind?" for the first time- the sawing guitars (dida dida dida dida dida didada didada - dida ...) and thought the singer was a woman. i was startled, irritated and then addicted very soon until this day. |
