Oh wow, I shouldnt post this, but I'm a pixies and a frank black, got every album, so understand that I'm on your side, but I have to ask, why does it seem everyone goes ape shit for Teenager of the Year? I was on the pixies board and in the topic about people's fav albums of alltime, some people did they would rank teenager of the year even ahead of anything the pixies did, and i think also that rolling stone gave it four stars. Now look, there are some great songs, I mean abstract plain and headache are both great songs, but certain parts just sound dated and not as good. So can someone please convince me that I'm wrong. |

I've been listening to Teenager pretty steadily since the week it was released. It definitely doesn't sound dated to me and I still enjoy it, and ten years is a fairly long time. I can't accurately describe why I still dig it. I just do. And yes, I rank it above any Pixie record. |

That album has more creativity than all the "hip" mainstream band put together through their whole careers. |

i enjoy teenager but parts do sound dated to my ears - probably because i did not hear it until probably 5-6 years after its release

My wife pointed out the other day that TOTYear has a nice mixture of instruments. Superabound for example. |

pop perfection hadnt been done that well on the US side of the shore in a loooong time...that's why TOTY is nice. its got enough hooks, jams, and stories to make that hour of music a nice ride.
its nice to hear pop/rock that doesnt go straight for the cheese or laying on the angst. |

That's all true. 22 songs, all beautiful in a different way. It sounded good at the first time I heard it, and keeps on growing. Fazer Eyes, Big Red, White Noise Maker, what a songs. I also think it's better than any of Pixies-albums, but also love Pixies. Still TOTY is not everybody's favourite, it's just one great album FB created. Not even last, that's been proven. |

I think you can´t compare Frank Black alone to the Pixies! Because they are both so great but in a different way. I think it´s why we like him so much! He´s allways doing different songs. That´s why I think he´s ahead of time

I would certainly rank TOTY as one of, if not my favourite album. I think in many ways its the album that Trompe Le Monde wanted to be, not that Trompe isn't a excellent album, but in terms of Franks exploration of narrative and sound. The song writing on TOTY is just epic, and the mix of instruments particularly keyboards makes for a gloriously rich sound. Its difficult to cite another album of this length with so many memorable tracks. I actually think that the main weakness with Cult of Ray is that its too short, you can enjoy each song on TOTY as part of a much bigger whole, and there is less stress on individual "outstanding" tracks, more on a mood, ambience and journey.
Oh whatever - its just a sodding excellent album, live with it and love it

I think the fact that there are so many songs, but no real duds (at least as far as I'm concerned, and I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that) has a lot to do with it.

This album has withstood more listenings than probably any other one I have ever bought. It always has held my attention based on such a wide variety of types of sound-thrashing songs all the way to incredibly beautiful softer edges such as Speedy Marie. Frank puts more depth into the lyrics of one of his songs than many bands do on an entire album. Lyle Workman's guitar playing was also genius. I feel TOTY is more timeless than early Pixies cd's. Live, I missed this tour, but from the sheer ferocity of parts of his set on Cult of Ray, the TOTY portion was completely ridiculous as he launched from one song to the next with no break of any kind. Unforgettable. |

Teenager of the Year is probably the greatest album since the heyday of classic rock. It is incredible. The first 12 tracks are all incredibly brilliant, and the rest are great, esspecially white noise maker and Space is gonna do me good. Mind blowing album.
So Im headed for the stereo store, to buy a white noise maker, and turn it up to ten. |

It's one of my favorite albums of all time. It was the second Frnk solo album I got, and at first I thought it was just OK. The more I listened to it though, the more I realized there just wasn't any filler on the thing. Good stuff. |

It just is. I love this album. But lately I've been listening to Black Letter Days and FB&tC alot. I love all of his albums and it's hard to pick a fave. Calistan is definitely one of my favorite songs, though. |

As a guitar player, I remember sitting down with TOTY and trying to figure out some of the tunes. There are no "easy" riffs laying about haphazardly on TOTY- the whole thing was really thoroughly thought out. Add to that the rich texture of the lyrical content and BAM. TOTY is still in my top 5 of all time. The recording stands out for the songs collective ability to gel as an album and stand on their own- and as the man himself told me in an interview some years ago, "it wasn't an album for the dummies." |

You mean you only listen to the song "Freedom Rock," or you only listen to songs that would qualify as freedom rock (which would presumably be all of them)?

some reasons that come to my mind:
* one half of the songs are extraordinary incredibly brilliant, the other ones are still outstanding astonishing
* i mean, you can just feel there is an awful lot of compassion in the whole album;it sounds like that frank wanted to show what he is really able to do, being unsatisfied with the low response to his almost equally good debut albim
* the sound is very good
* it has a lot of melody
* the lyrical conent is rich beyond any imagination
* eric d. feldman fitted perfectly to this period of frank
..and so on and so on and so on...

I use to give three opportunities to every record before I throw it away. TOTY needed five listenings to like it. Seven to love it. I gave it two extra chances 'cause he's Frank Black.
I'm sure Frank would be glad with this comment.

We've been having some good weather here (for a change), and I was listening to TOTY in the car on the way to work. I have the best commute in the world - through the middle of Cotswold Countryside - and I'm driving through this gorgeous sunshine, down a deserted country lane with TOTY blaring, and you've just got to think "It simply doesn't get any better than this". Ultimate summer driving song, perfection.

Have you ever heard and sang "Freedom Rock" driving really fast on a highway? Have a taste!!!
P.S.: My car can't run those fast, but it makes noise like it was doing it

His best lyrical work. I don't know many times I listened to Superabound when I first got it. I had it in my car constantly, and I would rewind (yes I had a cassette player in my car) it and listen to it again. Actually I would rewind it to Hostess With the Mostest and listen from there, as that was the beginning of side 2 of the cassette tape. They weren't just any cassette tapes though, they were Maxell High Bias cassette tapes.

In my opinion, Teenager and Dog in the Sand are career defining albums; if rock critics would wipe off their nostalgic-tinted glasses and remove the wax from their ears, they might be able to hear that.
I agree with Adnan. There's 22 reasons why TotY is such a fantastic album.

The songs. The lyrics. The chords. The dynamics. The energy. The truth. The Black.
Give me the Beatles songs, I'll squash 'em all together, add a few herbs, sprinkle them into a rizla and then I'll spark that bitch. And still they'll be no way near the sound of Teenager. It's that good. No comparisons. Frank Blacks' work of art. It made me forget about the Pixies. Franks back! |

I'm curious to hear from the people who say that parts of TOTY are dated. I can't hear it! I mean, sure, I'm of the "best album ever" stripe, so maybe its becaue I have never really gone THAT long without hearing the album (though sure, some passages still have that K-Tel trigger effect of making me remember when I first heard them). But which sounds/structures/songs sound dated, and if they do sound dated, what other things do they sound like to date them?

Brilliant album in every way. I always listen to it from start to finish. And I do not think it sounds dated. That's like saying the Beatles are outdated. Great music stands the test of time. |

I dont find it dated in the least, but I do think some of the back-half is a little dull (fazer, I could stay here, big red, space, white noise maker, pure denizen) . I prefer the Orange album myself. Nevertheless, TOTY is a solid solid piece of work.

So I was a sophomore in college (at UMass...) and my roommate was much more savvy than I was in terms of music. Although I had been listening to the Pixies for years, I picked up her TOTY cd and didn't know anything about it. Just popped it in the player. (I think I was also mystified by the cover.) I don't think I took it out of the player for a least a month. Immediatly addicted. 10 years later, still listening to this masterpiece. That's what it is. A masterpiece. |
