The only problem I have is in making text links. I can do it on other sites, but not here, although other folks can!

like this you mean?

quote it.

about html code. i think the reason it's turned off on a lot of forums is because you can use it to mess up the whole page if you're evil/clever enough. at least you could a few years back on some forums, not sure how much more secure they are these days.

Then again, the forum is a vintage model.

Most up-to-date forae use basic html just fine, and have some convenient shortcuts, for example _underscores to make italic_

PixieSteve, you're a genius. Now I see the mistake I was making was in not using quotation marks. Thanks.

Easy peasy. Without spaces, you want to use...

[ url = "http://www.noob.co.uk" ] like this you mean? [ /url ]

It's all about the quote marks.

Come on, Carl, Coastline, give it a try. Give us something to laugh at.

I'll tell you who did have me in stitches; OldManCoffeeCan. Everytime he posted a picture it always linked to the All Forums page, and I'm sure he never did it intentionally. God knows what buttons he was pressing.

when i said quote it, i wasn't actually referring to the URL (although yes, you need to quote it). i meant quote my post and you can see the syntax.
