There was a time when they were flawless... okay, not flawless, but certainly respectable even in their lesser outtings (perhaps Hudsucker Proxy, my least favorite of the 1994-2001 years, but a fun movie regardless), but the last two films have been utter shite (Intolerable Cruelty and The Ladykillers, and somehow, much more so Ladykillers than Cruelty, Billy Bob was one of the redeeming factos in Intolerable Cruelty, along with a few jokes there and there), and it seems the new one that I just read about (can't remember title, too drunk) may easily fall victim in a similar manner to the most recent two. The Man Who Wasn't There was a remarkably original and engaging story, and it's not that old of a film... I mean, 2001 is rather recent in the grand scheme of things, how do they suddenly just give up and produce bland popcorn nonsense. Why? Why can't they at least be a little more sacred? Piece of shit Hollywood films have been better than their last two efforts. I might rather watch Resident Evil than sit through Ladykillers again! Seriously! What gives? Any insight?

Ugh, it's not letting me edit my own post, but I meant 1984 to 2001 plus other typos.

It's true, how come people who did Miller's Crossing, Fargo, The Big Lebowsky (all time favourite movie) and Barton Fink makes don't care about them? I think they should stop hiring handsome men like Clooney. Handsome men doesn't make good stories, unless it's a film noir. |

Although Clooney was fantastic in O Brother, Where Art Thou?
I agree - they sold out.

in an intereview somewhere they talked about how, while most of their films had been critical successes, none of them had made much money. and they wanted to try their hands and making a straight up, financially successful Hollywood film (INTOLERABLE CRUELTY).. i haven't seen that one, or LADYKILLERS. even though i know it's Coen Brothers, i can just tell they're both horrible.
i don't know. not every film can be great. i have faith that they'll hit their stride again. this is just their experimental let's-see-if-we-can-make-it-as-Hollywood-directors-for-hire phase.
but it is sad to see them working on such cheese

of all the artists I like working these days, they were one of those I'd least expected to start turning out conveyor-belt pap. I saw half of Intolerable Cruelty and didn't think it so bad but probably that was I'd had lower expectations for it, everyone I know spit at that film. The Ladykillers was just lame, I don't buy their excuse that they wanted to try their hand at financial success, I feel it is more laziness on their part rather than cunning orchestration - the biggest running gag in the film was the Chinese guy would hide his lit cigarette in his mouth when the old lady came to check on the gang of thieves. Surely just because you want to aim for some cash it doesn't mean you'd beat such weak gags to death like that whole film. Or maybe it would. Maybe they've picked up expensive narcotics habits along the way. though you're right Floop, you don't have to see those last two films to know them at all, which is pretty sad.

LadyKillers is the only Coen bros flick that I don't dig. That's not a bad batting average in my books. |

iv yet to see ladykillers cause i heard it was crap.

as much as it's disappointing that they made those films, i think people are being too hard on them. they set an ultra high standard for themselves with their first 4 films. it's easy to put down a film, but it's not easy to make a film. cut them some slack. they've got a few projects on their plate right now. i find it hard to believe that those guys, with all their talent, won't make more excellent films.

I haven't seen Intolerable Cruelty or The Ladykiller either (the original Ladykillers is brilliant). Actually, I've never seen Blood Simple. Their next movie is No Country For Old Men:

Carl is fortunate to live in an era when there's no need to buy Elmer's Glue-All by the pallet.

Floop, I like how for the Coen Brothers, the experimental phase is making conventionally packaged films for the popcorn audience. Funny how that works!
