anyone heard of these guys? a friend from Athens, Georgia introduced them to me. Apparently they've been around for a decade or so, I've been listening to one called The Sunlandic Twins, bristly and warm with terrific harmonies.

Yup, I first heard of them about 3 years ago. They are ELO-tastic!

I thought the Apples In Stereo were supposed to be the E6 ELO ripoff?

i LOVE of montreal!

their "style" has shifted less lo-fi over the past three albums. it's all good.

their early stuff is lo-fi beatles-y tunes, lots of chord changes, crazy story-lyrics, tons of bizarre instruments...

their new stuff ("satanic panic" and onward) is more focused, more electronic, insanely melodic, good shit.

the newest one (hissing fauna...) is out there, but it has moments of greatness.

i'm supposed to see them on saturday night, but i don't know if i'll be able to make it :(

I've listened to "The Gay Parade" by Of Montreal a little bit and I remember a few songs that their moments but overall I have yet to understand what is so incredibly special about this band. I can hear the pop hooks and all that great stuff but I didn't care much for his voice. I must listen to some more. But that will be later. I'm sick of music right now.

I haven't listened to all the album yet, though they got me with these lyrics:

We were darting from the place where we just couldn’t fit
For away from all the violence safely flying in our own orbit

Why do I always have to tell you ”forget about the precient signs!”?
Forget about the life we knew
May we never be stripped of anything we love
may we grow so gentle never go mental
may we never go go mental
may we always stay stay gentle

what was my number? 114395? I don’t care!
No no no no no

I love them! Everyone interested in inventive pop should check The Gay Parade, Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies AND Satanic Panic in the Attic at least!

I'm getting to be a pretty big fan. I'm really enjoying the vocal layering on the last couple albums. I get to see them Friday night, and can't wait to see how they translate such thick production to the stage.

I've only heard a few songs, but that Outback commercial kind of makes them a lot less cool.

Ya, you can let that stuff go for a while, but eventually they start sucking. Look at the Shins... they had a song in a McDonald's commercial, and I liked Chutes Too Narrow, so I was all "oh well, that sucks but, this record is good!". And now? Sigh...

Plus Kevin Barnes kinda bugs me, mostly because Stereogum won't shut up about them.

Really? Weird.

The Shins are okay, but I can't figure out why they're as popular as they are.

I never saw the commercial, but I read about it in an interview with the band. Things reach a point of exposure that really start to ruin them, you know? I liked the Shins and Garden State. And then you couldn't turn on your computer without reading how great Zach Braff was and how Natalie Portman loves the Shins. Pretty much haven't gone back to either, in part due to that. Arcade Fire are in dangerous territory at the moment, and it saddens me.

We weren't really exposed to that over here, so we still think they are great. But then your best bands are always la la loved more over here.

I really like The Shins. I don't think they're the greatest band on the planet, which I guess some people are saying now, but I haven't seen Garden State, nor anything else that would "spoil" the band for me. Their new album is definitely worth getting. And as far as Of Montreal goes, I don't see what magical power some commercial for a steakhouse has over how good a band is. I saw them play an absolutely amazing show tonight. If a band is good, somebody's going to notice. That's the point. If a national restaurant chain came to me and asked to put one of my band's songs in a commercial, I'd be way too entertained to say no.

Well, actually they re-wrote one of their songs for the commercial, but I see what you mean.

They're playing a show right near me today, I probably won't go, but only because I just found out about it and don't really feel like going anyway.

Tomorrow I know I'll be thinking "why didn't I go?".

The band didn't actually re-write it for the commercial. They just gave permission. Kevin Barnes said "We were approached by Outback Steakhouse's ad agency asking about making their own cover version of 'Wraith Pinned to the Mist (And Other Games)' for one of their commercials. We thought it would be totally amusing to hear their take on one of our songs as a jingle."

But you're right. Tomorrow you will be wondering why you didn't go. They really put on one hell of a show.

Hey I've just got into these people, playing Manchester on Friday, to which I'm going to! Such a wide variety of sounds across the albums, I think they're absolutely fantastic!
