CMJ Turns 1000

Story by: Kory Grow

Today, the CMJ Network is collecting airplay reports from college, non-commercial and alternative radio stations for its 1,000th issue of CMJ New Music Report, the groundbreaking music industry trade magazine founded by Robert K. Haber in 1978. Compiling college radio airplay reports, reviews and features on up-and-coming artists and in-depth industry analysis, this milestone celebrates literally hundreds of thousands of pages devoted to previously unheard of bands like R.E.M., U2, Nirvana, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Public Enemy, Metallica, the Pixies, Wilco, the Roots, Arcade Fire and countless others.

In May, a special CMJ1000 commemorative issue will reach subscribers. Generations of artists, station managers, record store owners, label reps and everyone else in between have contributed their anecdotes about their history with CMJ to its pages, many answering the question, "What album means CMJ to you?" There are also many surprises in store for the issue as well.

Looking back, CMJ has remained the unparalleled source for championing new artists, lobbying for college radio and waving the flag for evolution in the music industry. No other publication has chronicled the changing guard and layers within the music industry as in-depth and with as much passion as CMJ. And there's no better measuring stick for identifying new talent than the 1,000 issues the CMJ Network has amassed over 29 years. It's truly something to be proud of.
