Yes, I'm a Liz fan. So kill me. Anyway, some heretofore undistributed Girly Sound songs have surfaced. These are not the known thirty-some-odd tracks but some newly surfaced material. Miss Mary Mack, Love Song, & Valentine are new; Girls Girls Girls is a new, longer version than what what we have on Exile; and In Love With Yourself sounds like the same Girly Sound track but with cleaner recording. Available free for download here:
http://www.lizphairexperience.com/girlysound.html
The first four songs that appeared are also available for listen-only here:
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=44049497
Apparently there are at least a few more newly discovered tracks but only these have surfaced so far. For the past couple weeks quite the debate has been raging at Liz's forum over why the person who has access has been so slow in sharing. For those not in the know, the Girly Sound Tapes were circulated by Liz before she got a record deal. They feature just Liz and her guitar, recorded in her bedroom, and are regarded highly by us Liz nutcases.

Cool. I got a link to the Valentine song from the chud forums a couple of days ago, but had no idea there was more. As a guy who still cherishes his old girlysound cassettes, this is the equal of heavenly manna. Thanks

the fifth was better than the fourth, but still not on the same level as the first two. Truth be told, I hate the fourth one. Whitechocalatespaceegg was always been kinda blah to me, but still I know some who love it.

bill, yes, the recent two albums were trashed pretty thoroughly, though it must be said that with Liz there's a lot of music biz politics going on. Many people were more than ready to take down yesteryear's critic darling. I like about half of each of those recent discs, and I like them more the more I hear them. Each has material as good as anything she's ever done. Sound familiar? I like whitechocolatespaceegg very much, even more than Whip-Smart, though that is a worthy followup to Exile in Guyville, which is the classic it is said to be.
A disc to get if you can find it is the COMEANDGETIT ep. This was originally released as download-only linked from the much hated 2003 eponymous Liz Phair album. I've never seen it for sale on cd anywhere except at a show in 2004, and then it was packaged with an autographed copy of the Liz Phair disc at an inflated price. It's a five track ep in the style of the lo-fi early material. Some of the best stuff she's ever done. I wish shed forego the slick production and return to the rough production that she knows and does so well. Last years Somebodys Miracle is better than the 2003 album in that its simpler and has none of the hit parade Matrix type stuff.
I think Exile, Whip-Smart, and Egg are essential, and get the Girly Sound stuff online. My understanding is that it is out there, though I havent searched since I found it at a dimeadozen predecessor a few years ago. |

What's the trick to getting these tracks to download? It asked me to give my e-mail address to "subscribe" in case this "program" was updated.
I did that, but still no way for me to actually download the material...
Thanks - PR

It seems to work for me, but then I may have registered or something on some prior visit. When I go to the savefile link, it presents the four tracks in boxes in the lower half of the page, with an orange button on the right for each one. When I click on an orange box, a new page loads with a blue link in the middle that says "Download the file now", and when I click that, the download starts. The first page does have a "type your email address" for updates, etc. box above the track boxes I describe, but I just ignore the email box. Sounds like you might be seeing only the top portion of the first page, minus the wide boxes for each track. Is that right? |

I remember "Combo Platter" was the Supernova B-Side, and that was pretty good, part of it was an early version of "Shitloads of Money".
I was listening to the album w/ "Why can't I" on it, this afternoon- half of the songs are very good, half sound exactly like Kelly Clarkson or Brittany. |

A track as been added: "Girls Girls Girls", a seven minute version of the song that ended up on Exile. Sounds good, and in general the opinion is that these Girly Sound versions are of better recording quality because they are closer to the master. I think this link, which has all five so far, will be where the hopefully growing collection will accumulate:

Of the Liz albums I've heard, whitechocolatespaceegg is my favorite. The first two seemed a bit hit-or-miss, but maybe I need to listen to them all the way through again. I've only heard a few songs from the self-titled album, and nothing from the most recent one.

I'm glad people have enjoyed this little Liz revivalism. I thought there would have been more tracks posted by now. KSR - It's funny how I've remained consistently drawn to Liz when some many other acts have come and gone for me. I started this topic with the defensive "So kill me" because a couple of years ago there was a Liz topic here and a civil war nearly broke out. But this time it's all love and kisses. |

Topic nanny here. http://www.lizphairexperience.com/girlysound.html is up to thirteen tracks, almost an hour's worth, and counting:
in love with yourself valentine love song miss mary mack girls girls girls white babies fuck or die easy target thrax miss lucy elvis song don't hold your breath clean
I'm loving this stuff. Word is there's an ancient rendition of Polyester Bride coming. So far I'm most pleased with Clean [proto Never Said], Elvis Song, the countrified Fuck Or Die, the extended Girls Girls Girls, Easy Target, Thrax [Jealousy + Tell Me You Like Me], & Miss Mary Mack. No telling how far the leakers will take this but I suppose they could post about forty tracks if they take us through all the cleaner versions for the original two disc Girly Sound.

Up to 28 tracks, with the most recent three appearing this morning. Looks like this is going all the way through the Girly Sound collection, to include many previously unheard demos. If you're already onboard with Liz, this is the mother lode (at least until (and if) lossless versions hit the dime). It appears these tracks were originally arranged in two collections, Girls Girls Girls and Yo Yo Buddy Yup Yup Word To Ya Muthuh, so we can hope that at conclusion a definitive tracklist will be confirmed. Discussion continues here: http://www.lizphair.forumsunlimited.com/index.php?showtopic=1918&st=180

In the latest installment of my ongoing crusade to sing the praises of Liz Phair, here's a post of mine I recently upped over at her site. Please pardon the Frank reference. That was a poseurish analogy for consumption by non-Frank-nutcases. For the record, I listen to more "Christmass" than I do "Surfer":
"Two nights ago I was drinking and 'erbing, and cued up a healthy dose of newer Liz, which I hadn't done in awhile. About two thirds of both the LP and SM discs, all of the comeandgetit ep, plus Insanity. A person could easily put together a fine single disc compilation of the post-spaceegg stuff. Lots of great songs, cut from the same cloth we loved from the younger Liz, only now from a more mature, and maturing, songwriter, as is appropriate and right. I agree with those that say Liz isn't pumping out Guyvilles anymore, but who is? Hell, Frank Black doesn't have any Surfer Rosa's on offer either but that doesn't make me crave his next disc any less. Liz got a bum break with the reviews of LP and SM. Yes, she made some miscalculated career moves, but she was mobbed, with all the collective intelligence of the mob. I hope she realizes that, and suspect that deep down she does. For all of her artistic bravado she is a sensitive spirit. She does want to be loved. Some of us embrace her entire catalog, and she deserves to know that."
edit: since this thread was originally about the GirlySound material, for those new to this thread and interested, those mp3s can now be found here: http://girlysound.com/ I would have editted the links provided in the earlier posts and adjusted the topic title but the system won't let me. Too old I guess. |
