This is a band I've just discovered. They're Canadians, it's their second LP and it's great. The band is formed by Olga Goreas and Jace Lasek (wife and husband), and a lot of guests from the Montreal and Canadian musical scene play on the record. It's very slow, atmospheric, emotional (not "emo"), and at the same time very heavy and very harsh. Jace Lasek has a tiny and soft voice that sometimes sound like Mark Linkous from Sparklehorse, and his wife does a lot of backing vocals. Their music reminds me a lot of other different bands (Beach Boys Pink Floyd, Galaxie 500, Arcade Fire, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Polyphonic Spree...) but they have a very personal sound at the same time. The album deserves three or four listens to get into it, but when it's done, it's a real delicious musical landscape for the ears.
Highly recommended.

Yeah, they cool. I'm sad cuz they're playing in Toronto on Friday and I have to leave that afternoon for Boston. We Are Wolves are opening - another great Montreal band - which makes it even worse..

My old band opened up for them and the Unicorns back in late '04. It was my first show with this band, my first real show ever actually, so I was pretty off-kilter and the place was packed. I went outside for most of Besnard Lakes set to catch some fresh air and relax. What I remember was they were quite spacey, musically that is. I talked with one of the guys for awhile after the show, he was cool cat. I didn't really interact with the Unicorns. One of the Unicorns had this really aggressive shit-talking onstage persona but it was all an act far as I could tell. Our frontman talk with him qutie a bit. I didn't really know who they were before we were booked for that show but everyone thought they were the greatest fuckin' thing since Pavement. I can't say that they really struck me in any profound way.
