I know the restaraunt they are referring to.. its called the Coral Family Restaraunt. Its more a diner than a deli. Very cool story. LA is his signature song by far! |

While I have written many a lyric in the Coral, the deli where I wrote the lyrics to L.A. was actually about a mile from there at the corner Hollywood Way and Magnolia. I forget what it was called. It closed years ago. I believe the Coral is still there, no?
I remember once at the Coral I couldn't stop staring at one of the other diners because it was Michael Palin. Everytime I peeked up to double-check that it actually was Michael Palin he would catch me staring. It was very embarrassing for me, and I'm sure annoying for Michael Palin, but I just couldn't help myself. I couldn't believe Michael Palin was actually sitting in this coffee shop, not really such a strange event considering the Coral is in Burbank, CA, but when you're star struck you're star struck. Some years later I was standing quite alone in the alley behind a famous rock club on London, a narrow alley formed by the tall buildings there with just a sliver of sky shining down, kind of like a scene from Brazil, when suddenly out of a doorway, which was surreally located about halfway up one of these tall, windowless brick cliffs, stepped a man. Our eyes locked in that quiet moment, that lonely place, just the two of us cut off from the rest of the world. It was Michael Palin.

Great story! I have stomped the valley grounds for many years.. I dont recall a deli on that corner? Are you talking the NW,SW,NE or SE corner? The Coral is still there for sure. Great coffee shop! But your deli story is killing me since I cannot recall it. |

He wrote one about Denver. John Denver :)
"Los Angeles" made me instantly forget the Pixies. Glad to know the truth about it. Looks like my life is complete now.

SW corner.
Ok, thats what I thought? I remember the old building that use to be there and I do recall the deli now. It was torn down and replaced with a rite aid pharmacy. So which lyrics were penned at the coral? I remember seeing your pic at Uptown Taco too. |

That's a cool story, FB. Palin and the other five Pythons are personal heroes, like yourself sir, and I daresay any of us would be hard pressed not to be starstruck seeing yourself at a restaurant! Only saw Brazil a little while ago, actually. |

I once saw John Cleese walking on a beach near Santa Barbara and someone (was it Brian?) recently saw Terry Gilliam promoting a film on the streets of NYC. So, that's 3 out of 6. |

Yeah, Tideland. I posted something about that, but I didn't know anyone on the forum went to that. |

my friends and i checked out Uptown Taco back in the day after Frank mentioned it in an interview. i couldn't believe it when i saw his framed/signed picture in there. it became kind of a Frank/taco mecca for us. it's such a shame they're not there any more. to me that was like a Frank Black Los Angeles landmark. and even more sad.. of all things, it's been replaced with a vegan restaurant.
not to mention their tacos truly were excellent. the guy would sit there and grill the carne asada fresh for each individual taco/burrito order..
cool story though. i think if i saw Frank at a deli in Burbank i would shit my pants. |

So how was he walking? Was it silly or just your regular walk?

Ok, it's a Python marathon ? Then, I have to confess I saw Terry Jones in Paris in a cinema, presenting "the meaning of life" (my favourite python movie). He was really funny and cleaver, and the crowd asked him VERY dumb questions, as if they were forced to and didnt know ANYTHING about him. I wanted to ask a cleaver question but I was totaly paralised, like if it was impossible to actually talk to one of the legends of my childhood. Some say it's bad to to mess with childhood's myths. There is a theory that Michael Jackson is nut because he saw himself as a cartoon character in a Jackson 5 videoclip. |
