after recently returning "home" after 4 years away, i was finally able to set up my stereo system once again.
after 4 years without a proper components system, it was one of the things about returning home that i was most excited about.
after living for 2 years with no stereo whatsoever and the other 2 with a cheap "home entertainment" system, being able to crank up the volume on a decent setup was very very exciting to me.
and my word was i blown away....
i had forgotten how good it was.
The first cd i played was Surfer Rosa cause i love the sound of that album....and it was something i'd had 4 years to think about.
and listening to so.bay was just beautiful. i felt as though i was in the studio with the boys as they were recording it...
My current setup consists of a Marantz CD-67 CD player and a Marantz DV4610 DVD Player going through a Marantz PM7001 Amplifier to a pair of B&W 602 S2 speakers sitting on LME Speaker Stands.
I had to buy the Amplifier and DVD player once i'd returned because my previous amp was a very good Pioneer A400 which my brother has had and my nephew broke...and i never had a dvd player cause i left so long ago! i bought Marantz cause i was very happy with my cd player which i'd had for a few years before leaving....
so, after all that, the real point of this thread was to ask what you boys & girls listen to your favourite frank cds/vinyl on?
do you believe in spending the money requied for a setup, or is it just ipods and computer speakers?

For me it's just ipod and computer speakers. It amazes me the amounts of money people will spend for a pair of speakers sometimes. I also can't tell the difference between mp3 and FLAC. It's all the same to me.

I lived with awful computer speakers for a good few years. I inherited a fantastic but incredibly ugly stereo when my parents moved to Canada/I went to university, which I moved into our living room when I moved into a house. I now use some old 70s stuff that I've gathered cheap from places. It sounds ace. My only particular qualm is that my old record player doesn't like new records much. I'm assuming it's because they're mastered louder or something. My old Talking Heads, Ian Dury, Beatles, you name it records all sound excellent, but stuff from the last few years sounds a bit funny. Anyone else experienced this?

I like vintage stereos. My main one has nothing on it made after 1978 (aside, obviously, from the CD player). The guy who sold me the Sony 2251 turntable told me he purchased it 1975. The amp/receiver and speakers (tall RTR's that weight 80 lbs. each) all stopped being made after '78. It's also a great conversaton piece since so few people my age have anything like this.

Why do you have a DVD player in your set up Benji?
I currently have a Aiwa Midi system, but it's having trouble reading CD's at first now. It's fine after track one, but I think I may get a new one anyway. I know it's probably only a problem with the laser, but I want a really good hi-fi now, built from seperates.
I have been looking on Ebay for some vintage Bang & Olufson, so I may take a gamble on that.

My stereo broke down 3 months ago and I haven't had time to buy something, so right now my installation is a DVD player and a TV. Which sucks. I can't wait to listen to all my new CDs on a proper stereo.
I want to buy some solid stuff. People have recommended me the Cambridge amplifiers and CD players, anyone knows this brand? Denon sounsd pretty good too.

and i do recommend buying something good denis.
i'd recommend marantz because thats what i bought and i like it alot.
and second hand is a very good idea.
previously to buying my 2 new components, my previous amp was 2nd hand and my cd player still is....

I've never spent a lot of money on stereo systems. Basic 100 watt amp and straightforward cd player, with a cheap equalizer to make the boots sound right as required, but I have always been a fan of JBL speakers. Great tweeters and it's amazing how much bass they get out of relatively small woofers. Even had a graduate student EE major acuse me of hiding a subwoofer somewhere. No way those dinky speakers are doing that, he said.
Years ago I read that though the US had lost most of its home audio market to Japan and Europe, it still made good speakers. Something about the ears I guess.

Currently used as the basement rig. These new A/V Recievers don't even come close to sounding as nice.

course you can't tell the difference on computer speakers. although i'm not particularly fussed myself if the mp3 is good enough quality.
one thing i hate about sending a friend the odd track over the internet - i know they're just gonna listen to it on computer speakers. not that my set up is really good or anything, oh no. simple one unit, Sony CMT-M100D with the speakers it came with. one day i'd like to invest in something nice, but i have better things to spend money on right now.

I have a pair of Grado SR-60 headphone's, they sound really awesome. I use them all the time, they are very retro styled though and som people look at me strangely as i walk down te street sometimes.

Most of the kit was bought just before the models were upgraded which saved me a few £'s.
When I hooked it up for the first time I was blown away by the audio quality of this set up. It needs to sit in a reasonably sized room though - our lounge is approx 6m x 5m. Acoustics also improved if floor is carpeted etc.
Need to buy a new turntable at some point as I'm still using a shitty Goodmans deck.
Never regretted forking out the dough - music is pretty much my main pleasure/pastime so why not indulge it! My ipod/JBL combo in the kitchen is ok but pales in comparison. The only problem is that I have to wait until the family is out of the house before cranking it up as I am deemed antisocial otherwise.
Your Marantz/B&W set up should be pretty good. Both well regarded manufacturers.

looks delicious...
and i totally understand about having to wait until the family has left before cranking it up.
my wife has very sensitive hearing so anything above 'only just audible' is too loud.
drives me nuts....

For fuck's sake, I hope you're only playing FLAC through that stuff! ;)
I mostly only have time to listen to music in my car. I'm partial to JBL, but probably because that's all I've ever owned. I tried Bose and Infinity speakers, and ended up taking both back. I'm sure they're fine and there are much better speakers out there, but whatever sounds good to your ears is what sounds good, ya know?

| I love B&W speakers. I was at a hifi shop and listened to classical music (which I'm not that in to)on a pair of 700 series B&W's and nearly wet myself. Listening to music on small computer speakers or ear buds will pass, but there really is no comparison to hearing the same music through a great setup. The songs sound much more "musical" and the instruments actually sound like how the instruments sound when hearing them in person. Makes me feel like I'm in the studio with em. |

For what its worth:
Speakers - Monitor 'Silver 5', floor mounted
Amplifier - Vatiros 'Libra' Tube (2 x 120w)
CD - Maranrtz CD 63SE
Wiring etc - MIT
I don't have a turntable anymore.
The only really expensive things were the speakers. The sound quality is excellent, the only gripe being that a bigger room is needed.
