I have been thinking lately about the Pixies getting back into the studio. Is there no new news regarding this. The excitement of this prospect is building to a fever pitch within me, yet I am not hearing anything about it.
Will this not be the biggest event of 2007, or the decade? |

No.
Last news we got (correct me if I'm wrong, my fellow uberfans), Kim wasn't too enthusiastic about recording new Pixies material. But we might have a new Breeders album in 2007.

jediroller's right. it's what frank said about this. for what it's worth, i neither see a studio album nor would it be the decade's biggest event. but that's just me.

Does it have to be the next Sgt. Peppers or can't it just be a bunch of tunes by a few musicians for people to listen to? As long as they sincerely go into the studio, try to write the best songs they can, and record them, then they are not cheating their fans. They only cheat their fans if they do it half assed.

Last I heard they were rehearsing and recording over the next couple of months. Any music the 4 of them make together is Pixies music, if it's no good you can always listen to the old albums. It'd prolly take them a few albums to hit a groove anyway, so be patient!! |

Frank Black is writing the songs. I don't think it'll take long to come up with good material. (Still, I'm hoping they don't record. I like my Frank solo.)

I'm hoping this could be the year of a new Pixies album. They've already recorded a couple new songs since the reunion, so it's not like it'd be absurd to think of a new album as probable. I love Frank's solo work. It's nothing short of spectacular and brilliant. And the Breeders are just brutally beautiful. I'd be happy if all I ever got was their music for the rest of their careers. But the Pixies are magic. That's the simplest way to put it. You put the four of them in a studio and there's a spark that I've never heard in any other band; from the opening chord of "Caribou" to the fading reverb at the end of "The Navajo Know," and every bootleg and demo in between. Even when tensions were high in the band and it didn't even seem like a group effort, that spark was there. It's the same way live. And they've proven that they've still got it on stage. And my favorite part of the two new songs they've recorded is the fact that you can actually HEAR them having fun. I think that speaks volumes. I understand and can appreciate Kim's reluctance. And if she decides not to play ball, then that's her choice. If there's anybody out there who has earned my respect, it's the members of that band. I'd probably be bummed for a bit, but I'd get over it. It's their choice. If they go ahead and hit the ground running, I'll be counting down to the release date like I did for their first reunion show. Sorry for the rant. I just get a little giddy about the thought of new Pixies material.

No need to apologize. I've been out of the loop for a while and wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything.
I think of those songs, especially of Bamthwok, as savvy buzz-generating promotional material for the reunion, not as the beginning of new material from the band.

I have tried not to get my hopes up. But they are up a little bit. I just hope that they let the fans know of the outcome either way if they end up recording or not.
For some reason, I think because they are playing Australia that that might help motivate them to record because it might be a bonding experience. This is completely my guess but I think the chances of them recording is 55%. |

I have a feeling they will record an album, regardless of Kim's doubt about ruining their legacy. I think she'll see not only that fans are dying for it, but that the monetary value of a new album is tremendous.
When said album is recorded I hope it includes the following tracks...
1. Rock A My Soul 2. Bam Thwok 3. In Heaven (The new slow version.) 4. Do What You Want Gyaneshwar 5. Radio Lizards 6. Dead Man's Curve 7. Don't Get Me Wrong 8. The Water
I think all of these Christmass songs would sound awesome once "Pixie-fide."

Is it just me who can't imagine the Christmass songs as Pixies songs? After hearing them as FB only I just don't think they sound like Pixies songs at all. Not one bit.

I can't see "Dead Man's Curve" as a Pixies song, but I think "Radio Lizards," "She's My Way" and "Demon Girl" scream Pixies. And there's no way "Gyaneshwar" is Pixies.
And aren't you havin' fun? |

I love Dead Man's Curve done solo. I didn't think of it as a Pixies tune either until I heard it live with the backing band. Gyaneshwar is oh so Pixies. The second I heard that live in Philly I knew it was a Pixies tune. Frank even had it on his MOG under "Pixies Demos."

Even if they were created explicitly for the purpose of generating buzz, that doesn't change the fact that they were in a studio, recording music again. Know what I mean? They're still legit NEW songs. No, the Pixies didn't have the weight of delivering an entire new album on their shoulders when they recorded them, and I think that shows. The recordings have a pretty loose, live vibe about them, and not that precision that made all their albums stand out. So no, I don't see those two songs heralding what's to come from the Pixies if they did another studio album. But I think they're still a sign that the band can go into a studio and have a good time.
And as far as predicting what songs could show up on a new album, I'd be surprised if we'd recognize any of the song titles. I'd love to hear Gyaneshwar done with the Pixies, as well as a number of the other "new" songs, but I have the feeling that the reason Frank decided to put Christmass out with those songs was because they most likely wouldn't wind up on a Pixies album. And as far as the other older tunes go, "Rock A My Soul," etc., I doubt we'd be getting any rerecordings like that. I think a new album would have to be something just that: all new. I just hope something new comes our way. Until then, I've got Christmass to listen to. I'm pretty happy with that.

I don't care how long it takes, I think the new Pixies record should include every solo FB song ever recorded.
And Boom-Chick-a-Boom would be a nice bonus!

There was some radio session where he introduced the song as "having kind of a Pixie-ish chord progression". So yeah.
The song grew on me as I heard it live a couple times, but honestly, if that's the best he can do, I can see what Kim meant by "too fakey"...I think she's right to be reticent. I'd far rather hear a loose, let-it-all-hang-out kind of thing from them over any self-conscious attempt to "write Pixie-ish songs".
The most recent info we have on this, is this, right? |

When you're talking about the NME words like "info" (or "news", or "the latest") should be in quotation marks. |

Dead Man's Curve is great classic Frank song I don't hear Pixies in the Christmass songs at all, and I don't want to either. They will record or won't. Let's just wait and see. Untill then I'm excited about the new Black Francis (what's in a name) and the new Breeders.

I agree its a great song.....that's why I am perplexed on the comment that Kim said it sounded "too fakey"....? The guy who made that comment said he understands why Kim thought that. Were they listening to the same song??.....I think its a very passionate song. |

I thought it was actually FB who said that. He had done some demos, but he thought he was trying too hard to be Black Francis again. He said it in an interview, and I think he mentioned that someone in the band thought the demos sounded forced (or fakey). He said that he wouldn't reveal who she was.
So I think it was FB relaying Kim's thoughts in an interview that it came from, but I don't think he ever actually quoted her by name, just paraphrased her reaction.
