Hello Frank Black Nation! My name is Chris Henderson and I have recently had the supreme honor of working on Frank Blacks new album, "The Christmass" at Planet of Sound Studios in Hartford, CT with the one and only Myles Mangino. For school, I was required to do an internship at a recording studio and I was fortunate enough to get some time at the Planet of Sound. I came to this project not knowing anything about the Pixies and Frank Black, but I was pleasantly surprised that find that they both kick ass. Myles had traveled with Frank Black this past summer on his cross country summer tour with the Foo Fighters and recorded all of his shows. Back in Hartford we went through every show and made a chart of what songs he played and how well he played them. I believe we looked at nearly 15-20 shows. One thing I learned quickly about Frank Black and his live performances is how well he seamlessly transitions between songs. His shows have a great flow and killer energy and thats what we were trying to capture with this album. Myles has been working Frank Black and Pixies for many years and he has a great grasp on their material. He was really able to determine which takes of the songs had the best energy. Along with the live songs, Myles and Frank Black recorded several songs on the road in hotel rooms. In the studio we added a few more parts and had musicians from the area come in and play. Mark Mulcahy came in a layed down some amazing vocal tracks. Once we had the live tunes and the "studio" songs together (I believe there are about 5 new studio songs) we started assembling a song order/list for the album. It was hard because there were so many good takes of so many songs that it was difficult to narrow which ones to use. We eventualy got a rough list together and Myles spent a lot of time listening to the songs and tweaking the order. The final product is awesome! This is coming from some one who has never heard Frank Black before. His writing style and emotion in his songs is unparalled and I would encourage listeners from all genres to take a few minutes and check out this album- You will not be disapointed. -Chris--

You're preaching to the choir on the last point, Chris! Anyhow, thanks for stopping by and filling us in on "Christmass" from your point of view.
One question: Which shows did you look at -- the whole tour, or just select shows? Did FB's people record every show on that tour? (Man, I'd love to get my hands on those ...)
I could not find my honeycomb. |

I love it whenever a person connected to the Man checks in. It gives this place real credibility. Not that it needs it, of course. FBn gots it in spades.
