| My wife and I have been enjoying the wonderful Nick show from the 90's "Pete & Pete" on dvd. I love the theme song by Polaris but the lyrics are really hard to make out. My wife claims that only the singer knows them. Anyone have any ideas on what he's saying? Does anyone even remember the show? |

I remember the show but don't remember the song, which is kind of useless really. Sorry.

I have the Polaris CD. I think you are correct that lead singer only really knows the lyrics. If you listen you can decipher some but not all of it, especially one line.

Pete and Pete was and probably still is my favourite programme ever.
My favourite episode is either the one where Stu Benedict, yellow school bus driver, gets stuck at a red light; or, the episode where Stu Benedict, yellow school bus driver, goes crazy when someone sings 'When You're Happy and You Know It'.
Classic.

Well, I have to admit, I don't have their first EP, The Backyard, which is probably the best place to start. But otherwise, begin with their first full-length, Surprise, Surprise, Surprise.Awesome guitar work by Mr. Ray Neal, incredible melodies and a hint of darkness in the songs. There isn't a mediocre track on the entire album. Their next album Me and Mr. Ray is considered by many to be their best. It's very stripped down, mostly acoustic, with Mark and guitarist Ray Neal playing all the instruments. Once again, the melodies are a highlight, as well as Mark's gorgeous, sensual voice (he's got one of the most beautiful male voices in the world in my opinion), and Mr. Ray even finds room for some great lead guitar work in the toned-down songs. After that, there's Glad, which is the only other one I don't own. I think one side of it is a live show with Pere Ubu and the other side is studio material. I've never heard it, so I don't know what to tell you. The nest album, Drenched (featuring Scott Boutier and Dave McCaffrey--future Catholics) is a major letdown in my opinion. The melodies aren't as strong and the production isn't as good as the others. Their last album, Portrait of a Damaged Family is much better than Drenched, but not necessarily essential. I rarely listen to it, though, so perhaps I should give it a few more spins before I form an opinion.
So I would go in order. With the first two you can't go wrong. But I think a lot of people make the mistake of starting with Drenched (possibly because it's easier to find at the used CD store) and saying they don't like them.
After that, you can pick up Mark's solo albums. His first two are brilliant--masterpieces, I would call them. Fathering combines the darkness of Surprise... with the laid-back acoustic feeling of Me and Mr. Ray and tops it off with his strongest vocal performance and some of his best songs ever. SmileSunset is probably my favourite. It's got a really mellow, melancholy tone to it--one of those records that's perfect for a rainy day. The songs are amazing and the mood is perfect "A Cup of Tea and your Insight" is one of the most spiritual, gut-wrenching songs I've ever heard. His third solo album In Pursuit of Your Happiness has some excellent songs in it, but it's not as consistent as the others. I would still recommend getting it, but AFTER the others. And I would probably get Fathering first, just because more people seem to like it than SmileSunset for whatever reason.

Heheh, one of my favorite shows as a kid, I also have the soundtrack, came in a cereal box. I'll listen to it a few times and try to figure them out...
