Hmmm. I doubt he really is racist, he probbaly just lost it, but that's no excuse, really-it was a fucking idiotic, ignorant thing to say. I'm not a Seinfeld fan (although I never really watched it) and I always found his character annoying (he kind of seemed a bit ripped off Christopher Lloyd in Taxi to me), but that is of course beside the point.

People say things in the heat of the moment that are designed to anger the other person, not necessarily things that reflect their attitudes. We've all done it to siblings, I'm sure.
That doesn't excuse it or make it any less offensive, but I think the media would have us believe that this qualifies him as a lifelong racist when it might've just been a sad and pathetic attempt at getting the upper hand on some hecklers.
BLT's right: he probably shouldn't do stand up if this is his reaction to some heckling.

That SUCKS! I love Seinfeld, and i'd count myself as a Michael Richards fan, but after seeing that i can't help but call him a cunt! Every stand-up has there own one-liners to deal with hecklers ("I don't come to your job and slap the cock out of your hand, do i?" etc) however this is moronic. Sure people loose the plot sometimes, but this kind of thing is beyond redemption.
Whether he is a racist or not is a bit unclear. From listening to interviews and commentaries on the Seinfeld dvds, everyone says he is an eccentric and sometimes aggressive man (he would get really pissed off if someone would mess up their lines, check out some of the bloopers on the dvd to see his reactions to several of them)
Maybe somewhere in his head he thought it was going to be a funny response, but it was like watching a mangled body in a car crash.

| Last night on Letterman he was on by satellite during Seinfeld's visit. He apologized profusely, seemed very upset, didn't give a bullshit apology like, "I'm sorry if I offended someone", and isn't running and hiding in a rehab treatment center. I think he made a big mistake (like Dean said who hasn't said stupid things during the heat of the moment) and now has to live with it nationally because of cellphone cameras and YouTube. |

This is pretty intense stuff, heat or the moment or not. By the third "he's a n--ger" I would have thought the heat of the moment was passed. I personally think things like this is born from some deep rooted hatred (too strong a word, but i'm lost for an alternative at the mo) of sorts but that's just me. Excuse the pun, but this could be a noose around his neck for some time. Just ask Big Ron. Mud sticks.

I think the hecklers deserved it. I'm not defending Richards, what he said was wrong...but hecklers suck, and the shame they bring upon themselves is the shame they bring upon themselves. If someone wants to berate a speaker, that speaker has every right to attempt to top them...intelligently. But, in this case, Richards shamed himself as well...stupidly. But fuck hecklers. If I were a stand-up, I'd carry a gun instead. My mouth would be too valuable to say what a bullet could say easier.

One thing's for sure -- you need a thick skin to be a performer of any type, but I would think stand-up comedy would require the thickest of the thick since you're dealing with direct verbal confrontation. Any comedian can absolutely count on getting heckled at some point. Those who can't adeptly handle it are naturally weeded out and go back to their day jobs.

I'm with those who opine that this was more of an "anger" thing than a "racist" thing. It sounds to me like the heckler might've touched a nerve and Michael Richards went nuts.
He starts off kind of joking. The "noose" line, the "interrupt the white man" line... These are jokes (and I'm not saying they're GOOD jokes, but they're jokes). This happened in a COMEDY CLUB. Jokes about race are common among comedians.
You can get away with the stinging racial stuff IF it's funny (see Sarah Silverman), but Michael Richards lost his cool. |

Today at work I had to deal with a bit of fallout over this.
A black co-worker suggested that each of his white coworkers is capable of such an outburst. Lurks just beneath the surface. He was applauded by other blacks.
How he could say something of the sort, after having faced no racism in the workplace, and be cheered for such counterproductive bullshitting, offended the living hell out of me. It wasn't said in the heat of the moment. There wasn't an argument to be won. It was, in his opinion, a statement of fact.

The video clip doesn't have subtitles for all the was said. At one stage when everyone was getting up and leaving, Richards goes to the right of the screen muttering about rehab (he repeated it three times, which was something he did a lot of in the clip)
Also, the heckler said "I like you" and "i'm a fan" but this couldn't really be heard when Richards was shouting at him (i think it was around the time he was saying "that's uncalled for"). That's kind of sad. Obviously the guy liked Richards

I like hecklers for the simple reason they bring out the best in some comedians. I find nothing funnier than a heckler being put in their place by the comic's wit/humour.
