Septic Death, but I wouldn't call them the best S band I've ever heard! They were Pushead's band (y'know, the guy who has done a lot artwork for Metallica, among others).

I know it says just to name the best, but there are so many great "S" bands I thought would have been mentioned that I must submit a list. A few of my faves have already been mentioned, but I would like to add the following names:
Sun City Girls Spearhead Sun Ra Soul Coughing Suicide The Slits Silver Apples Swell Maps Swans Syzygys
If we're going with surnames, I would also nominate Raymond Scott and Karlheinz Stockhausen, two of the twentieth century's most important contributors.
