Having just downloaded IE7-the differences of which seem mainly cosmetic on first view (although there is a phishing thing), the automatic settings give the text on the forum a snazzy new look! Anybosy else get this? And what are IE users thoughts on the latest version of in general?

I haven't used IE in years. I can't stand the program because not only is it horrible, but Microsoft seems to completely ignore standard web languages and try to get people to use their standards...which aren't standards at all. If your interested in trying another program. I love firefox (www.getfirefox.com) for the pc.... I am a proud "switcher" (ie Im on a mac now) so I'm currently using Safari which is also quite good.

I have boycotted IE and never use it. I used Firefox on my PC and then I got a Mac like Mantaray. And I still use firefox on my Mac. IE really pissed me off because I had some Flash buttons on my website and all of a sudden these weird gray boxes appeared around them (only in IE), and you had to click on the object just to "activate" it, and THEN you could click the Flash links. Apparently there is some code you can put in the HTML to prevent this, but why the shit should I do that just to cater to ONE browser? And a crappy browser at that.

the IE7 groovy text thing you're on about is probably ClearType? if you like it, you know you can turn that effect on for the whole of Windows XP. right click desktop, properties> appearance> effects> use cleartype to smooth edges.

and yeah, FF2.0 ftw... or opera. anything but IE!? IE7 has what.. tabs.. built in search.. i think i saw these years ago elsewhere?

Yeah, Opera. Firefox keeps "borrowing" Opera's ideas (which will soon be "innovated" by MS) with no end in sight. Tabbed browsing (and now with the close button on each tab), mouse gestures, embedded search, session restore, etc., etc. Opera's had most of that stuff for years.

Opera has become my browser of choice over the last year or so. I think the new version (9.1) is aiming to get rid of the memory leaks, which will make it fantastic. I just wish that sites like Google supported it properly.

It is almost impossible to support Opera properly. It's a nice program on the user side of things, but a major pain to get working if you're developing. Their javascript, DOM, all that, just not pretty. Too bad because they do seem to be pretty innovative otherwise and it is, as I said, nice from a user's perspective.

and for most of those years not for free/with adds. plus it had an awful bloated interface until the version 8 i think

I don't deal with any development so I don't know about it from that point of view. As a longtime Opera user, I naturally dislike seeing Firefox trumpet a "new" (but old for Opera) feature but I'm still glad it has become so popular, if only to make the web less IE-centric.

What is actually so bad about IE? It's all I've ever used and does everything I need it to. Why do so many people hate it?

There's less reason now, but before they were sorely lacking features and full of holes. They didn't stick to web standards, forcing people to design webpages that could both work the way they were supposed to and for IE, and then there's just crowd that's just anti-Microsoft.

Now the features have been remedied and updated, and the holes have been replaced with new, mostly-unknown holes. :)

There are still areas where they could improve and add other standards, but I suppose that's true of any browser.

I've always used IE just for the sake of not changing, but since I upgraded to v7 I just find it crashing all the time. So I finally got round to downloading the latest version of Firefox and it's easier, neater and more reliable. I approve.

I have the in both Opera and Firefox as well. Firefox has themes and functionality extensions (such as FlashGot, Gmail manager, MediaPlayerConnectivity) and Opera is just faster and cleaner (with widgets and mail client). Actually, I find it hard to choose between Opera and Firefox, but mostly Opera wins just for speed and the email.

the cat also appears in Safari. As I said before if you are designing a website it is a pain to work with IE because Microsoft feels that they are better than everyone else and therefor doesn't follow standards that others do. So as a designer its a pain in the ass, and as someone who's not a designer, well unless whoever designed the site was designing it for IE, you might loose out to an extent (partly due to 3rd party browsers, especially FF becoming more of a standard these days).

I've always used IE, and I'm curious: I often get a thing where I'm just browsing and all of the sudden a window comes up saying that Internet Explorer has encountered an error and needs to close and something about sending an error report to Microsoft or whatever. Anyways, is that just a problem with IE, or would it do the same thing with Firefox and everything else? If Firefox doesn't ever do that, I'll switch over in a heartbeat. Otherwise I don't really have any complaints about IE for now.

When programs unexpectedly crash on Windows XP that message about sending a report to Microsoft pops up...as far as I can tell that really does very little to help your actual problem. I can't guarantee that it would go away with a switch over to FF because XP can just be a pain on its own...but I didnt have that problem while using FF on Windows. Give it a try, most people who I know who try it out end up liking it (my friend installed it on my computer and after awhile I really got into it).

in the tab or address bar? It's in both for me. Actually Opera has an annoying bug where the favicon changes to something else, seemingly at random. You can change it manually, though it's convoluted.

In the tab, address bar and in my favourites list the cat has been replaced with some blue and white logo.

Probably just mixed up. Also, Google now has the icon for HMV. Weird.

I love Firefox, even though the little cat in my bookmark is the ebay icon. I've never worked out how to change that. It's the cat in the address bar.
