Has anyone bought movies from the iTunes Store? Are they worth it? I've been considering buying some, but the real sticking point is that I can't watch them on my TV with my surround-sound speakers and all that. I'd be limited to watching on my iMac, and that just doesn't seem worth the cost. I love how easy it is to buy them, but ...

I know iTunes videos are now 640x480 resolution so that is good. I haven't bought any movies from iTunes. Do you have an iPod? Because you can use an A/V cable and output videos from the iPod to your VCR/DVD player. I've watched episodes from iTunes of Lost and the Office like this. You may already know this but I'm just letting you know. Or you could wait for this:

I am not going to ever buy a movie from iTunes. 10 bucks? No thank you. I could buy a better quality DVD copy for probably the same price or cheaper. The compression they use for their videos looks great in high lit scenes or colorful situations. I've noticed it isn't so great in dark areas or with black shaded areas. You begin to see pixelation. Maybe they've improved the compression somewhat, I'm not sure. Maybe the higher resolution they have gone to helps? |

Yeah, I don't know what planet these marketing people are from that they expect people to pay the same for a download as for a DVD.
1) DVD = physical medium (higher cost)
2) DVD = no DRM or proprietary encoding
3) DVD = special features
4) DVD = higher quality with surround usually
5) That is all.
Now you put movies at a price like $3-$5 and we'll talk.
As for being able to watch on your TV, Apple's coming out with something called iTV in January that will let you do just that.

I forgot about hooking up the iPod to the television for viewing. That helps a bit with the portability issue. But my iPod is already so full (and I keep deleting music just to fit new Frank Black bootlegs on it), I don't see myself putting movies on it.
And you're right, Dean, you get so much more for your money with a DVD that it's hard to justify the prices being similar. Still, I do like the idea of getting off the couch, walking across the room to my iMac, and buying the kids a movie -- as opposed to driving to Target and dealing with traffic, people, etc. That's where there's a real value.

We sure do. What do you have in the "Debby Does" line of movies? I already have Dundurn and Dallas.
BTW, I just got my spanking new MacBook Pro today with the Core 2. Oh so tasty, but I need apps badly.

What you need is the DVI out to (S-Vid-Composite) video adapter.. $20 bucks just about anywhere. Core Duo Rules...

I think you can download a random podcast widget from apple.com and use that as a template (hold control/click on widget/'show package contents')
whenever you update the podcasts, the widget will automatically grab the latest version and have it waiting for our listening pleasure via the little widget methingy. I don't use too many, but this one in particular would be a gem.
Oh, and macs rule! |

Good point, Dean. The widget would be cool and all, but it wouldn't be too useful to me. Twice a month, on the 1st and the 15th, I check my iPod to see whether the new podcast has shown up on it. Still, maybe some Mac users get their podcasts a different way, though I can't imagine why.

This mac user is itunes, but the widget is just small fun.
