My November 14th birthday and an open offer to fly me down by my mom is leaving me wanting to attend one of the three southern California shows on the 17/18/19 November.
I'd like to hit the "best" venue of the three, or the one with the most likelihood of running into a few of you people. Now that I am unshackled from marriage and religious rules, I am open to the "meet up for a beer" before and/or after type stuff. I don't know if Floop recalls years back, but I kinda wasn't "allowed" to consider meeting up with him when I was considering hitting a Frank show in LA (yes, a very healthy relationship I was in).
Anyway, what's my best shot for getting tickets, and expecially avoiding the 50% convenience tax bullshit, or am I too late? Which show would be best to hit? Who here has plans to hook up and hang out? Would it be a buzzkill to bring my half-bro along? Etc.

Mostly it's Mormonism to blame. No booze allowed, etc. However, my wife would not want me to be "around" that influence. "Avoid the appearance of evil" is the applicable LDS mantra there. And at least in my case, she could disallow anything by kind of saying "well, I suppose you could do it, but it would be really upsetting to me." (One of) My problem(s) is that I always lose the being upset and shitty to the other person war, so I always would just give in.
Unless you want to do it privately, that's plenty and probably too much detail for at least this section of the forums, eh?

Money does tend to get in the way of a lot of us going to a lot of Frank Black shows. Someone said on another thread that if they won the lottery, they'd send the whole forum to the Saskatoon show for the meet-n-greet. If I win the lottery, ed, I'll get you to all three SoCal shows. As my escort. Instead of sitting her in Denver wishing I were there. Damnit.

Ed, I wish that you lived in Denver ... or that I lived in Salt Lake (well, not really, though it's nice to visit) ... you need someone to take you out for a lot of beers (and some FB shows). It'd be cheaper than post-divorce counseling, I'm sure.

i'm going to the Hollywood show on Friday. still debating whether or not to go to Aneheim on Sunday. it's the last show of the tour, which makes me want to go. those are usually the best ones.
i'm up for getting a brewski with the lovely people of fb.net.

I'll be at the Friday show in Hollywood. I was thinking about Anaheim, too, but I'm not a fan of HOB and the last HOB show I saw was Devo in San Diego, which made me lean heavily against going to a show at a HOB in an area I wouldn't want to live in. I still can't believe there's no McCabe's show.
But beer sounds good!

Yep. But if that's where it's going to be, that's where I'll go. I've lived in Hollywood, though. Don't think I'd ever live in Anaheim.
Saw DEVO in New York last year, a few months before seeing them again in San Diego at HOB, and the difference in the crowds was the difference between one of the best shows I've ever seen (NY) and just an average show. A bunch of meatheads down there at the SD show.
The last show I saw in Anaheim was Grotus/Melvins/Mr. Bungle a million years ago. That crowd was so bad Mr. Bungle played about four songs, told the crowd to F Off and left. This was after the Melvins got booed off the stage when the guitar player's amp died.
It's a tribute to Frank Black that I'm even considering going to Anaheim to see him play there, quite frankly.

I don't know what Downtown Disney is. Is that like Miramax? Anyway, I think Sunday might turn out to be the show I hit. I can only do one. I'll be coming from Corona. Maybe the Hollywood is a better idea? Also, would it be ridiculous to head out there ticketless and expect to squeeze myself in at the door?

i wouldn't say "ridiculous," but risky. i'm guessing the Hollywood show will sell out. why don't you just get tickets before you go?
Hollywood vs. Anaheim: I'm sure they'll both be great.. Anaheim will be the last show of the tour, so that should be fun. BUT, it is a Sunday night show. if you're coming in from Corona the Anaheim show will be closer, and less of a hassle to travel on a Sunday. coming into LA on a Friday night will be more of a bitch.
you could always come in early and start drinking at Barney's Beanery and pretend to be Jim Morrison.

Cool Brian. I will meet you somehow. Anyway, I wanted to mention I am pretty sure I hate beer. I have only tried one kind so far, but it tastes kinda how I expected: like shit. It was some dark amber thing. Anyway, I am willing to try more, but am unwilling to work on "acquiring" the taste just to become a beer drinker. So, is there something with comparable alcohol by volume I could drink that wouldn't knock me out while others are drinking beer?

I got my tickets for Hollyrock and Disney. I was thinking about San Diego and making it some sort of Frankcore weekend but I don't know, even though it is the "greatest city in the history of mankind" it's still a 3 hour round trip and driving by the big ass Mormon temple sorta bugs me. Plus I'm already giving the House of everything but Blues enough of my cash that weekend.
Look for me, I'll probably be wearing some sort of t-shirt and a pair of pants. And all the ladies in the place'll be jockin' me. Seriously though, hope I get to meet some of you.

The HOB website has Reid Paley and Kentuky Prophet playing with FB in SoCal, but no Paley at the Friday show in Hollywood. Anybody know if that's just an error of omission on the webmaster's behalf? Hate to miss Paley.

The price is free but it would only be proper that you buy the actual ticket holder a drink or 2.... probably the best tix you'll find. Transmarine know what I am talking about..... I think he took my Pixies at the Wilter the last time I missed out! |
