The Clash Reissue Singles in Massive Box Set Rock and Roll Hall of Fame opens exhibit dedicated to the band
April 2007 will mark the 30th anniversary of the release of the Clash's "White Riot", their debut UK single, and they're celebrating early with the release of the box set The Clash: The Singles, scheduled to come out November 14 on Epic/Legacy.
The 19-disc set collects all of the band's UK singles, including the 1977 NME giveaway-only Capitol Radio EP, in two separately-released formats: seven-inch and CD.
The seven-inches come as close to the original releases as possible, with "replica record labels and replica picture sleeves, containing single A & B-sides as they were originally issued," according to a press release. The CDs "also [come] with replica picture sleeves [and] several include bonus tracks gathered from 12-inch singles, non-UK (including U.S.) single B-sides, and rare promotional sources, including six tracks previously unavailable on CD."
There will also be "a 44-page four-color booklet with dozens of rare and unseen photographs and extensive memorabilia." Original Clash designer Jules Balme oversaw the artwork for the set.
What really puts this package over the top, however, is the "in-depth personal commentary" for each single, written by over 20 musicians and writers (and one soccer player!). The Beastie Boys' Mike D wrote an introduction to the set, and other contributors include Pete Townshend, Damon Albarn, Bernard Sumner, Bobby Gillespie, Carl Barat, Nick Hornby, and Irvine Welsh.
Preceding the release of the box set will be "Revolution Rock: The Story of the Clash", an exhibit of "well-known instruments, stage clothing, rare memorabilia, and never-before-seen original manuscripts and artifacts from the band," according to another press release. "Revolution Rock" will be open to the public at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum (where the Clash were inducted in 2003) from October 21 to April 15. Highlights of the exhibit include "Joe Strummer's Fender Telecaster, Mick Jones' Gibson Les Paul Jr., Paul Simonon's smashed bass guitar from the cover of London Calling, and handwritten lyrics for 'London Calling', 'Know Your Rights', and 'Clampdown'."
The festivities surrounding the exhibit begin on October 20 with a member reception at which Mick Jones, Lucinda Mellor (Joe Strummer's widow, who started the Strummerville charity), and founding drummer Terry Chimes will all be present. As part of the public unveiling of the exhibit the next day, Mick Jones will take part in "a Hall of Fame Series discussion with Warren Zanes, Vice President of Education and Public Programs."

I think I might like the Clash, but the only songs I know are "London Calling" which sounds cool, and that other one w/ the armadillio in the video that I think is annoying.
But I thought I might pick up the London calling album, but if I did I'd want the deluxe edition that came out last year. What I'm saying is, I want someone to buy me the deluxe edition and send it to me. |

jimmy, that aramdillo was two blocks away from where I used to waitress in Austin. jimmy, as you know, those two songs are the hits. what you need is to get a little Sandinista! action going, ok? Then top it off with a little Black Market Clash. And before you face the day each morning, instead of a bracing cold shower, slap on some of their eponymous first album. It'll get you going.

Clash songs most of the people in the world probably know, even if they don't realize it's the same group: London Calling, Rock The Casbah, Should I Stay or Should I Go, I Fought The Law (not the original), Bankrobber, Train In Vain ("Did you stand by me, no not at all").
I also remember hearing on the radio, so many years ago! Stay Free, Rudie Can't Fail, Charlie Don't Surf, Brand New Cadillac (also not an original), Revolution Rock, This Is England, Lover's Rock and Silicone on Sapphire (a conversation between computers). |

I'm sorry, you're mistaken about "Train In Vain"; that wasn't the Clash it was Annie Lennox. |

Favourite song on London Calling...
London Calling has the blood curdling scream and the yellowy eyes line (that always reminds me of someone in particular), and very often I think it's I'm Not Down, and then Death or Glory because I love that 'drunk' rephrasing of the troubadour part ("we're gonna fight ya brother, we're gonna raise hell").
But the song I fall for the hardest is The Card Cheat. |

i'd recommend the 30th anniversary edition of LC. vanilla tapes has a few gems, including the original demo of jimmy jazz.
The waxworks were an immensely eloquent dissertation on the wonderful ordinariness of mankind. |

I already got the Clash on Broadway box set, it seems that most of the same recordings listed above are on that. It also has a nice booklet, and jimmy, everything the Clash did with Joe and Mick is worth it. Combat Rock has a certain tongue in cheek aspect to it, don't take it too seriously. Just avoid that Cut the Crap disaster. And I gotta second the Sandanista recommendation from the mighty K, one of my favorite albums ever.
