Ok so my laptop's trackpad was working fine this morning but is now frozen. What's a Mac user to do?

Thanks guys!

Get a PC!

Sorry, it was there. Not much you can do aside from cleaning the surface with a very lightly damp cloth and restarting your computer.

I especially like this one: "it was a problem of static electricity. I opened the Powerbook and removed the battery and harddrive. Then i put my fingers onto the trackpad board and grounded it (bare-footed), assembled the Powerbook and restarted again: did work!"

Good luck, K. Remember: bare-footed. it could be the key to the solution, but be careful, yeah. don't want you flying across the room now, do I.

If it is an issue of static buildup making the capacitive sensing circuity not detect your finger, you ought to be able to do the same thing by touching a register or a metal desktop box and the trackpad at the same time.

Thanks, guys. I'll try all the suggestions tonight.

Dean, I knew you were gonna say that. Knew it! But what do you mean by "touch a register or metal box" at the same time as the trackpad?

Did you see how one posted was named DrFrank? That made me sigh...

Well, something grounded. Like the air ducts that bring warmth or cool into the room (the covers are called registers). If you have a radiator that works. The metal box refers to your PC's case assuming you have a desktop computer as well. Most of them have metal boxes and that metal is grounded so if there is broken wire and you touch the case you don't zap yourself.

Basically you want to touch something grounded and the trackpad at the same time, to drain any charge built up. I don't know that it will work, but it's probably worth a try. Certainly easy to do.
