hi,
does anyone know of a good place i can go to find out more about recording. i am trying to record some of my spoken word stuff and i am trying to add a drum beat to each one. for the drum beat, i want to sample from some cds i have.
is there an easy way to do this with only a non-mac pc?
thanks

I'm not sure offhand where to direct you, but I'd be more than happy to sample and loop some drumbeats from your chosen tunes?

Doog... thanks.... I am going to think about the songs and get back to you..... it might take me a week or two...but I can't say thanks enough ;)
I guess too that then the question would be how to mix every thing.
I have been using this Microsoft sound recorder that's pretty basic. It won't let me play a track and then record at the same time...

I downloaded Acoustica Mixcraft immorally from Limewire, it lets you record with multiple tracks, just now I just plug my amp into to microphone hole in my computer, which works, but obvuiously isn't the best. It's OK for getting stuff down for memories sake, but I will have to invest in some kind of input device

wow, thanks doog, drevil and mcil for all the help!! drevil i was able to download audicy. I re-recorded everthing. I couldn't figure out though how to put a beat in the background. I will check out the site you suggested mcil.
if any of you have time check it out at www.myspace.com/americasnaps2. I really wish it sounded better to the ear, but really don't have a musical bone in my body (or a good sounding voice) to figure out how to make it better.
suggestions are welcome....
thanks again ;)

A decent mic and compression makes all the difference, specially for spoken word stuff. A compressor kinda levels off the peaks so it's nicer and easier to listen to.
Hell, I could compress and EQ your "voice-over" as well as doing the drums if you so wish it- I don't have a lot to do at the moment, and it would probably be the best/most helpful thing to do with my time..

Are you gonna be re-recording the "vocals"? I'm not sure how much I'd be able to do with the ones on your myspace.
A tip for recording with cheapy PC mics: keep the mic like a foot away from your mouth, those little mics can't take much sound pressure and will tend to distort, no matter how low the input setting on your PC/recording software is.
Also, putting the mic side off-axis (so it's pointing right at your mouth but not dead infront of it) will cut down on the amount of "popping" produced when say P words.
