Pixies pioneer Frank Black will play in Salem

Pixies front man and solo artist Frank Black will play two solo acoustic shows Saturday at Guitar Castle in Salem.
Black, whose real name is Charles Thompson, has appeared in Salem as a surprise guest for friend Larry Norman, but this will be his first solo performance.
Black, who lives in Oregon, began his career in Boston, where he helped form the
influential alternative band the Pixies in 1986.
The group never broke into the mainstream, but it helped lay the groundwork for the commercial success of alternative rock in the 1990s and served as an influence for bands such as Nirvana and Radiohead.
Guitar Castle owner Tim Knight said Black approached him about a show after attending a concert by John Doe at the store in April.
"He asked me that night if he could play here," Knight said.
Knight said Black is looking for more intimate, coffeehouse-style shows between larger venues.
In August, he opened for the Foo Fighters for seven shows on the band's acoustic tour and will open for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers starting Sept. 29.
Black has been settling down in recent years, having two children, including a daughter in April.
The Pixies broke up in 1993, and Black continued a solo career, starting with self-titled "Frank Black" album in 1993. His most recent album is the two-disc "Fast Man Raider Man," released earlier this year.
The Pixies reunited in 2004 and have been touring the U.S. and Europe. The band finished a short European festival tour in July.

| That would be great! I am bummed beyond belief....I can't make it and Salem is only 30min. from my home. At least I will see him Nov. 14th. |

| Wow! I'd go, but I live 2 hours south of Salem and am already trekking to Eugene the next day for Mission of Burma. Plus I'm broke as usual. I wonder what the price would be? |

Yeah, a 70 person FB show is about as close to having him play at your house as is likely to happen. Amazing.

| I saw the first show. Great show. Frank/Charles played for about 70 minutes, getting started before 6 and finishing up with an a capella "666" at around 7 p.m. And to think, I didn't even know when I got up this morning that he was playing a show, let alone that I would get to see it. This afternoon, my wife and I were downtown in Salem and saw a sign in the window: "Charles Thompson Live at Guitar Castle". We decided to blow some time, then come back at showtime. My wife is not at all a fan and chose to sit in the car while I attended. What an angel. Now when I got to the door, it was sold out, but the guy at the door took pity and told me to hang around, maybe someone wouldn't show up for the sold out show. Well, someone did have an extra ticket and sold it back to Guitar Castle who then sold it to me. It was a sit on the floor or stand in the back kind of thing, kind of like storytime in grade school. The only problem was that I am allergic to all cats including the Guitar Castle cat, who visited me several times. I did have my wheezer along so no worries. This was probably the most intimate show I will ever see featuring someone who is so well known and influential, not to mention one of my favorites. (The only person I'd rather see in this setting would be Elliott Smith but sadly that is no longer possible.) It also had the most banter. At one point someone asked him to be more "catholic," and I think she meant succinct. More singing, less chatter. But I liked it the way it was and everyone else there seemed to as well. Frank proved he's got the goods when it comes to just his voice, his guitar, and nowhere to hide. He sounded awesome. |

| I did not keep a setlist in order. But let's see. I remember hearing Los Angeles, Mr. Grieves, Wave of Mutilation, Calistan, Two Reelers, Billy Radcliffe, Raiderman, Sing for Joy, Horrible Day, My Life Is In Storage, I'll Be Blue, Cactus, Holiday Song, I Burn Today, and 666. In very rough order. |

| I was at the 8:00 show Saturday night. A complete Frank Black geek like me would have been star-struck all night. For him to just be casually standing around talking to people and signing autographs before and after the show was very sureal. The 5 or 6 other times I've seen him, he's never made himself so accessible. And all this in a little guitar shop downtown in the city I've lived in my whole life. It was a very casual set he played. He was visibly having alot of fun, telling stories and joking around between every song for about the first half of the set. I've never heard him talk so much. I don't know if I can remember all the songs, but here's some of them in random order: Two Reelers, All My Ghosts, 666 a-capella (to end the set; he pointed out that Larry Norman, who wrote 666, is a "Salem-ite"), California Bound, Everything is New (I think), Massif Centrale, Manitoba, Song of the Shrimp, Raider Man, Cactus, Where is My Mind, Wave of Mutilation, among others I'm sure I'm forgetting. |

| Thanks so much for the reviews! I really wished I could of gone. I knew it would be amazing! I had a childhood friend visiting this last weekend, and I just wouldn't of felt right changing all of our plans. |
