Frank will be opening for the Foo Fighters on August 23rd in Toronto. Tickets are now sold out at 67 bones a pop - more than a little pricey for 40 minutes of Frank then a mediocre grunge band playing acoustic guitar. The next show is two days later in Chicago.
My question is this:
Toronto loves Frank, and I think the feeling is mutual since the last time he was here sans-Pixies he played 5 days at the Horseshoe. That being said, is there a chance that a late 23rd or 24th Frank solo show could be added to this tour? I believe it's a possibility. I hope there is a chance. It would be grand.

| ...I know that many of us are feeling the same way about the Boston show. I just cant get over the fact that we would be paying $60 for horrible seats and a half hour of Frank, while a solo Frank gig at a much better venue would go for $20 tops. To frank or not to frank? that is the question. |

wishful thinking is all we have sometimes,
when was the 5 gigs at the Horsehoe and how could i have mised it :-( being such a small venue up close and personal with one of Frank's show's would be a dream come true,
hopefully we will see him in Ontario sometime soon solo / I tryed to get ticks for the 23rd but it was a no go |

I was recently faced with a similar question and reluctantly had to opt for "not to frank", even though I've never seen Frank solo or acoustic. That Cafe du Nord solo show was doable but after travel I would have been out a few hundred easy. It's expensive just breathing in San Francisco. But what clinched the "no-go" was the venue. I love Cafe du Nord, but it's so narrow toward the "stage" that with a good crowd you end up standing in a dense mass unable to get much beyond a glimpse of the performer's head, unless you camp out up front well before the show, something I just can't do anymore. I always hang out at the bar and then end up near the back of the crowd. So I had to pass on what was a great one-off performance of fresh material. Not sure I made the right decision. Maybe next year, or later this year, depending on whether Frank adds more California shows to that October San Diego date.

The last Catholics NorthAm tour - October, 2002. Went to 2/5, which ain't bad. Looking back on it, and since it's been so long since he's been around sans Pixies, I should have made it to at least 4/5. Oh well.

I've got a mini DV camcorder and think I'll bring it to tape it (just audio). Anyone had any success with that? My concern would be battery life, I suppose. |

| I've never been "frisked" at this venue, so I'd say yes. Whether someone comes by and gets you to stop is another story. I was just thinking of keeping the camcorder in my pocket recording the sound only and see what came out. |

How the hell did I miss the first post on the date of the show?? Good thing they still have tickets.. Even though I'm in Australia right now, I still managed to get 4 right after reading the annoucement. I am so excited! See you south ontarian net bastards on the 24th!

I'm in Cairns, North Queensland, for a conference. I guess it is the best place to be in Aus right now given that it's winter and all. I came a few days early and it is definitely not enough.. There are so many extreme activities here. I've been white water rafting, on a jungle trek, snokelling, and scuba diving. It's getting to be an expensive trip, but since it's so far away, I may as well make the best of it.
Great news that you'll be taping, but I think I'll be the one buying you a beer (or beers) in exchange for a tape of the show?

looking for some advice on places to go while in london for one day.
my wife and i are driving from buffalo, ny and staying at the hilton downtown which appears to be close to call the office. i looked at beeradvocate.com and it seems that alex p. keaton's is one of the better beer bars in the area.
any advice would be greatly appreciated.

| Hey, Ryan. The Alex P. is a great little place and have a good, rotating selection of Canadian microbrews and imports. The food is not bad. I'd recommend dinner at Joe Kools followed by some drinks at the Alex P. and then off to the show. Joe Kools has been around a long time and have good, casual food. Pizza, nachos, wings are my favourite there, but I'm pleased with everything I eat there. Pretty plain but large tap selection. There's a tiny beer place called the Oxford Arms right near the Hilton that's not as good as the Alex P., but closer. All of these places would be within 1 mile of the Hilton. If you have any specific kinds of food/beer you like, I may be able to recommend something else. |

I saw Frank play at Call the Office 10 years ago in 1996 when I was a student at Guelph University. He opened with The Marsist (as it was the COR tour) and I remember how crazy the little place went when the guitar riff started. As a Boston resident during the Pixies' first go-round, seeing him there was surreal. Until I saw him at the Beachcomber last Friday.

The venue website says show at 9:30 with another dude opening the gig, so probably FB at 10:30. But to be safe, I'd be there soon after 930.

Right on -- he did another Honeycomb track -- Another Velvet Nightmare. I keep wondering how these songs will come out when it's just him and the acoustic. I hope a recording of this show eventually turns up.

Great show! I was hoping for more of the early solo songs he's been playing (Brackish, Headache) but still, very good setlist.
You can certainly tell the last couple years have dusted the cobwebs off the ol' screaming voice. He turned up the vocal intensity on many FB songs that never used to be like that, including some *fierce* growls on Massif Centrale. |

What an entertainer! I've never been floored by a solo performance before - it was very powerful. Everyone I was with had an amazing time and so did the entire crowd. Great response after every track. My personal highlights were Raiderman, Suffering (!), and Western Star. Can't wait til the next show with the band, but to be honest, it's gonna be hard topping that performance. Cheers,

Whoa. What an excellent set. I love that he played Adda Lee, Western Star, Big Red, storage, Fitzy, Massif, and I've seen your picture! I hope when I see The Man with band the setlist is like this but larger. I think 5+ Pixies tunes is a little excessive, though, especially if Velouria isn't one of them.

ha! Amen! the Pixies opened their set with Velouria at the Molson Ampitheatre in Toronto last summer, which pretty much made my summer.
I wish he'd dip into Tromp le Monde a bit more...that record probably just stirs up bad memories or something, kinda like Time Fades Away for Neil Young...or something like that.
Motorway to Roswell or Letter To Memphis would be SWEET, ya know?
Last night in London was indeed a night to treasure...if he'd just played something from Cult of Ray and Devil's Workshop, he would have touched EVERY solo record. the anticipation between numbers was half the fun "which of his 472 amazing songs is he gonna pull out next?"
