| Sorry to harp on this, but I think it may be possible that Frank actually met an old rocker that he once admired an a trip to Holland, and seeing what he had become (thinned down, addicted to drugs/alcohol, and living off welfare- "the dole"), he was saddened. I don't think Frank wrote this song thinking "I got to write a song about Holland", except to have it serve as a backdrop. It's really about one rocker seeing another of his ilk in a really sorry state and remembering his glory days. A pretty sad song, which makes you think "what a sad old world", but finally you console yourself by not crying that way. |

The Ratskellar was a (now closed) legendary rock club in Boston.
I think the talking part in Sad Old World is fun. Good curveball from Frank. You podcasters are awfully tough. ; ) |
