I'm completely in love with Mrs Kaye's work on FMRM. The Real El Rey and IJNYM have some really stunning bass parts. I understand Carol Kaye has played with a zillion people, from Nancy Sinatra to Frank Zappa, and I don't know where to start to hear more of her work. Well I have Pet Sounds on which she plays (is that her on God Only Knows? Amazing!) but I don't know wher to go next. I seem to remember billgoodman was quite aware of her career, could you tell me more about it?

Also, does anyone know which songs from FMRM does she play the guitar on?

She is a hell of a bass player. (Oh wow, that's a good question about the guitar...)

I had the absolute pleasure of once having a bass lesson with her. Truly a moment i will take with me to the grave. I still have one of her picks, its white, elongated and says "CAROL KAYE" right on it.

As for her work, it's hard to tell because so many times in the 60s session musicians weren't credited. But she played bass on a good number of Phil Spector's most famous recordings. Are you familiar with his production work? If not, google him and see where your tastes lie. Or...

"Don't Cry That Way" on which she also plays an arpeggio guitar part as well as bass. Those are the 4.

She's truly a legend. Just don't ask her what she's played on. She's notorious for claiming credit for many songs that she absolutely did not and could not have played bass on. But hell, she probably deserves more credit than she gets anyways.

There she is in action at Gold Star recorders c.1962, right behind Al Delory on the white piano:

Thanks Jon, I was wondering which song she also played guitar on.

I really love all of the LA session songs. There's certainly a different atmosphere to the tracks, why is that?
