oh ffs, IJNYM shouldn't even have been committed to a record never mind still in this competition.

Holland Town. I don't see it going in this round, but it really is no fun for me to keep voting for the same song in every round, so can we please take it out in the next round just for the sake of my enjoyment. Thank you in advance.
Also, IJNYM is brilliant musically; you can't call it a bad song based on so called "cheesy" vocals in the chorus.
ALSO, Black Rider II is the worst album-ender imo. |

::Gasp:: Even though it isn't awesome, it's still a Tom Waits cover and kind of interesting in a weird, quirky way. "Fare Thee Well" is just this boring traditional song that repeats over and over and doesn't do anything interesting musically. As my tab of it says: "Same chord progression used the whole song." Maybe I'm being harsh, but this song should either not have been on this album, or they should have ended with something more memorable. I think the last song on an album is its chance to shine and go out with a bang. Fare Thee Well doesn't do either. It's like I'd rather listen to the first song again instead of end with Fare Thee Well. |

Sad Old World has a great chorus although the verses are a little dull. Down To You has neither.
I guess my vote this time goes for Where The Wind, but it's getting tough. There's a bunch of them that could equally go off like Don't Cry that Way, Kiss My Ring, The Real El Rey (please, someone tell me what is so good about this song), and maybe Holland Town.

Although the guitar in the (I think) second verse is very nice, Highway To Lowdown. |

Me neither. It's a nice, short song. Probably in my top 5 of this disc.
The Real El Rey is pretty good, but I think I agree with Dean about wanting to know what is so good about it. And seriously, does it not have the SAME EXACT INTRO as "When the Paint Grows Darker Still"? Please go compare the two and you will see. |

The Real El Ray's true charm kicks in after the opening verse (once you get to "I'm going back to Manchester..."). It really gets good after that, so I'm all for it sticking around for several more rounds. Too bad about Down to You <sob> |

Geez you're right, those intros are the same. Same amount of drum beats, then an A minor chord on the keys. |

Uh... let's see. It has a nice title. Plus, it's a great soporific. Isn't that enough?

Soporific? My, it's the exact opposite. It's the only song from the whole album that grabs me by the guts. The only one where Frank actually puts his heart in his singing, the only one that makes me shiver when listening to it. Add some stellar musicianship (the bass and drums are splendid and Dave is a great as ever on pedal steel), wonderful chord progression AND a reference to Bohemia, and you got the best song of the bunch, period.

Heh, alright Derek, I'll listen to the beginnings of those two back-to-back.
I don't see how you can say that it's the 'only' one that FB really got into; I can't imagine being grabbed in the gut by this. The singing is good, I'll grant you, and even better than other songs on the record, but nothing attention (or gut) grabbing. The line about "Manchester, England" for example, feels really forced and unnatural, however cool a city and its inhabitants.
I'm not saying the song is awful by any stretch, but like others on the record it seems to have its problems. There's nothing in there that grabs me one way or the other I guess, and as usual I agree with everything the frog man says.

Derek's right. Both intros are exactly identical. Eerie... Anyway. All this discussion made me listen to the song at least a dozen times today, so I have to thank you for that. Our opinions differ hugely on this record (IJNYM, nails on a chalkboard? nuts!), but once you lay off the booze you'll get what I mean.

As are the intros for "Where the Wind Is Going" and "Kiss My Ring" - at least the very beginning of each...
To me, that is the fault of the producer/arranger - there are many songs that have the same chord progression that sound different. Just not these...
