Tickets for this show are listed at $28.50, but LiveNation is selling the tickets. With "convenience fee" and "order charge" the total for ONE ticket comes to $41.00.

Does this seem completely unreasonable to anyone else? I would love to go to the show, but you have to draw the line somewhere and I think the line has been drawn. The fees have gotten to the point that no matter how much I like the band/team/event, I'm not paying $12.50 extra per ticket for the "convenience" of going.

From what I've read, it doesn't even sound like a full length show. $41 for a 20 song set?

BTW, I've been to probably 15+ FB/FB+TC shows over the years, so this is not an easy decision.

PS - Can Frank Black solo with a new band touring for an album with no airplay and lukewarm review even half fill The Fillmore? I'd love to think so, but my heart says no - especially at $41 per ticket. Other people I was talking about going to the show with are also aghast at the service charges and probably won't be buying tickets, and we are the hardcore fans.

I want to support Frank, but he might want to be made aware of the reasons for the no-shows. The thought of a 1/4 filled Fillmore with FB wondering "where's the love" is depressing.

That's a possibility. I'll look into it. The $41.00 was with free shipping, BTW. Most FB shows get sold out around here, so I've never considered buying at the door - but I doubt he'll sell out the Fillmore solo.

I believe you can go the the Fillmore box office (any time, not just the day of the show) and skip all of the fees. I agree that fees suck and I feel like I'm bending over every time I pay them but then I remember the old days of camping out in the rain in front of the venue to score tickets to a hot show and think, $12 to skip that and have tickets delivered to my door isn't that bad after all.

I used to live in Oakland (back in LA now) and had friends in the city who would pick me up tickets at the Slim's box office for Frank's shows. That saved me the fees but the cost of me making a special trip to the city to buy tickets at the box office would easily eat up any savings (this is what ticketbastard is counting on), that's why it's called a "convenience fee".

I think it would be a good marketing move to just roll all the fees into the ticket price but I think there's a lot of contractual issues with that.

Frank Black and (insert band here) will still not sell out the Fillmore.

at least that's what I say!

But my objection to the fees is that it seems that it's Capitalism at its finest, but it's supposed to be "what the market will bear." We see record sales, concert sales, sport event sales, movie sales, you name it, declining and no one seems to blame it on the fact that they are charging to much for what they're offering and people are closing their wallets.

I just ordered some hockey equipment from an internet site and for the first time ever that I remember, the site charged a $4.95 "order fee". WTF? It wasn't shipping, it was just a random charge. I understand that there is overhead to running businesses, but you are supposed to build that into your price model, not just charge fees. Everyone is starting to just tack on random "fees" whererever they can, and it all adds up. We only have so much disposable income.

I fully understand the concept of "convenience". Hell, I don't mind paying $2 to use some other banks ATM machine. Why should they let me use their service for free?

But $7.90 per ticket is not convenience. It's a ripoff. It used to be like $2.00 a ticket. I could live with that. $7.90 is not reasonable in any way.

I have to agree, I seriously doubt this show is going to sell out. Yes, it's true that Frank shows almost always sell out in San Francisco, even multiple nights, but I think it needs to be taken into consideration that those venues are relativly small and when multiple shows sell out it's the same people going to all of them.

Agree with Jefrey. Just paid $80 to see FB at the Greek with TP&HB and I wasn't able to get any ticket close enough.
I missed the Cafe du Nord appearance which I'm sure was much worth the few $ fee!
Like Jefrey I've seen FB many times in the Bay Area the last 12 years and I'm ready to see him many more times but at one point cost becomes an issue. The Fillmore is a nice place for concert though...

I paid $28 on ticketmaster + a (ouch I didn't see this until now) $8.40 "connivence" charge. I'm still psyched. and if it doesn't sell out thats cool with me, just means I'll be closer to the stage.

Moksha23x was right the show was priceless. Absolutely awesome, worth every penny and then some. I would have been happy with this show even if I paid $100 for it. Sorry I don't have a setlist, but frank played well over 20 songs, so I'll leave that to someone with better memory than me. Plus, I was right up front by EDF and had a great view...great great great show from begining to finish.

The show was suprisingly awesome. I'd been hearing mixed reviews of the band, but whatever, they were great. I got a spot right against the stage directly in front of Frank, which while awesome, left me with a pain in the neck. Ten Percenter blew my mind, and his vocals on six sixty six sounded more like Black Francis than I have ever heard him live (including all the Pixies shows I went to). The band rocked so hard. Seeing the setlist proved to be slightly dissapointing as I got to see the songs they could have played but didn't (particularly Remake-Remodel and Suffering). I wish they were doing more than one night here.

I'll Be Blue....rocked? I'll Be Blue was worth the price of admission alone. Slow, but heavy. The band was pretty tight for the most part, and I'll Be Blue had an incredibly awesome jam in the middle.

The acoustic solo set was longer than those previously reported (more like 10 or 12 songs). In fact, FB apologised to the band for taking so long to bring them on. But the intro was priceless, he just kept strumming the chords while he brought them out and introduced them one by one.

Billy Block looked like he had won the lottery, He seems so happy to be in this band, like he can't beleive he's living a dream. His enthusiasm is infectious.

Here's what I remember:

Acoustic (with new, non-bullet-hole guitar):

Manitoba
Cactus
California Bound (inturrupted with chastisement of the crowd for not going "woooo" exactly when he mentions california)
Holiday Song
Nimrod's Son
Do What You Want (Gyaneshwar)
The Water
Song Of The Shrimp
Western Star
My Life Is In Storage

(I think I'm missing one or 2 - anyone?)

Band:

The Black Rider
Headache
I'll Be Blue
I'm Not Dead (I'm In Pittsburgh)
I Burn Today
All My Ghosts
Do What You Want (Gyaneshwar) - done twice - solo and with band!
The Swimmer
Ten Percenter
That Burnt Out Rock 'n' Roll
Been All Around The World
Johnny Barleycorn
Bullet
Horrible Day
Nadine
666
Dead Man's Curve
Sing For Joy
My Terrible Ways

Encore: Baily's Walk (jk)

Only gripe is that I wanted to hear Remake/Remodel which would have been a great encore. Heard a lot of muttering that "Terrible Ways" was a lousy way to end a great night of rock, but what can we say? He's the man, he does what he wants, and we like it.

PS - it wasn't sold out, but it was about 2/3 full I guess. Easy to get up front if you wanted, but not uncomfortably empty. It almost seems like FB feels more at ease with the audience if it's not completely packed. In my experience, he talks more to the crowd when it's a little less oversold.

Also, if you were paying attention, EDF and Duane Jarvis were wandering aroud the venue before the show, so you could have had a chat. Billy Block is a little less easy to disguise - I saw him hanging upstairs. So the lead guitar, singer, and bass player are all 5'6" or shorter - coincidence? Or did FB purposefully choose a "short" band to make him seem taller? No matter what their height, they rocked.

Baily's Walk? I love that tune and that demented whistling. And what does (jk) mean? Anyway - has he ever played that one before? Did the pixies ever play that one? I hope it got recorded.

Yes! Great Show!
I'm going to be quick right now considering a late night (I'll try to write a review later):

Ummm.....a couple things missing from above (which is totally understandable considering the freshness of the songs):
He played "The Water" and "Gyneshawar" in the acoustic set and
also played "Gyneshawar"(or however its spelled) in the full band
electric set. I ended up bringing a handful of people who were
unfamiliar with FB solo (some of them were "Pixies Fans" and all
were open-minded to music) Everyone was impressed and had
a great time. FB is my hero

The only thing I'm upset about is that I didn't bring the book I purchased for my hero. There's this book written by a man named JACK BLACK (not the fat comedian who I think took his stagename from this writer) anyways Jack Black wrote a book that inspired William S. Burroughs to write (He talked for many years). The book is called "You Can't Win",
and it is an inspiration in my life (like FB's work) . This book is "Americana" at its finest,
Train Hopping, Hobo Jungles...etc. etc.. I bought this for FB because of the writers name
JACK BLACK (which would be his son's name if BLACK wasn't his stage name) and because of how important this book is to me. I was going to bring it but I figured I didn't want to hold a book the whole time. I knew if I didn't bring it I'd get stuck in an elavator with FB. There are no elevators at the Fillmore, but before the show started I was standing outside gathering the troops and Billy Block walked out and I yelled "Billy" what a dumb thing to yell when I've never met the man. Regardless of never meeting him he came over to me and shook my hand. Great guy! This was the point I could have given the book "You Can't Win" to FB. But of course I didn't bring it because I didn't want to haul the shit around. I'm figuring someone (considering the writer's name Jack Black) must have turned Mr. Thompson on to this underground legend. I'm babbling and its not even about the show...I'm sorry. It was a Great Fucking Show. Again, Frank Black is my hero.

I'll write a review later.

Peace

So I wasn't planning on writing a review but I'm thinking about the night so..........
He came on and did his acoustic intro in which he was being very INTERACTIVE (like my cyber age language?) with the crowd. During "California bound" he stopped after he sang the words "CALIFORNIA Bound" for the first time. Apparently the crowd cheer wasn't proper timing and energy. The crowd did cheer but maybe a bit off ( possibly because of the immense california smoke cloud in the air). So he stopped and kind of poked fun at the crowds slower response which the crowd insinuated was because of the Smoke in the air, someone yelled or he said "Contact High" and then he instructed the crowd when to cheer, It was funny because after each "California" from then on, the crowd let go a resounding cheer, an overexaggerated and fun cheer. At this point I really felt "At Home" or "in a living room" comfort. I'm not sure but I think it was during "The Song of the shrimp" (someone correct me if you can, now I'm told that it was during 'California Bound' but I disagree) In the middle of whatever song he started being funny and started to like Rockstar solo........He said something like "I've never done a solo for this song" or something and he started going off in this funny rockstar solo thing......it was funny. At the end of his rather long (and great) acoustic set he did this drumroll (on the guitar of course) introduction......that he finally stopped at the end sort of abruptly and said something like "Ok enough of that" everyone laughed. then right before they started EDF walked up to his Mic stand and said "I want a straight stand" FB said "You can have mine if you want" then they went into FB said "This is a Tom waits son" they went into "Black Rider"....EDF said "I want a STRAIGHT stand" and they went into "a gay old time" in SF....coincidence probably.....
Great Fucking Show....More Later

Yeah, that stuff was funny about the mic stands. FB had a straight stand and the other two had boom mic stands. FB said the straight ones "look cooler". I don't know if he was just poking fun at his band mates or what, but I always used a boom stand on stage to sing because the straight ones got in the way of the damn guitar. And I thought the boom stand looked cooler. Shows how much I know. All this time, I was looking "not cool". Dammit.

I called a friend this morning because I lost my camera that I didn't get to use . My friend was unfamiliar with the work of Frank Black. I asked him if he found my camera he didn't then I asked if he enjoyed the show. He said he loved it and I was funny because I was getting into the music and I would check in with him and make sure he was enjoying it . One thing I said he thought was funny. This person is an an intelligent english speaking person, During the acoustic "The Water" I asked him, "Do you know what PROLIFIC means?" I think I quickly explained this is a rather new work in progress.
