I saw them on sale at TicketMaster. I think around $24. I was thinking of going, but I probably have school on that day. Sucks, doesn't it?

Flying from Philly to see my sister (haven't visited in ages, wasn't planning on it until i realized it was another chance to see our boy) (already did Lancaster, have Philly Oct 19). What is the Metro like? neighboorhood? security? will i have to show up early to get a respectable spot? Will FB ever play Western Star for me (never seems to...)

Can't wait

Oh, it's about 4 or 5 hours from Ann Arbor. It seems like driving from the Northern LP would take like twice as long!!

it sounds bizarre doesn't it? actually, i went to school in Ann Arbor. anyway, i've made the trip to Chicago a ton of times from Gaylord (my home town here in Northern MI). I had a girlfriend who lived/s there. i could get there in 5 hours sometimes (without speeding too much either). Maybe my route is one in which the space-time continuum becomes distorted. hah. i can't wait to visit chicago (it's been a while), and i've seen frank play there a number of times. chicago and FB. just what i may need.

Oh, yeah. I could have figured that. I wasn't thinking very hard. That is why a lot of people come to Ann Arbor, I think.

doesn't seem to be much action on this thread...no posts in 2 months, BUT tonite is the night!

i'm in downtown chicago right now...who's going to this show? i'm fired up. my first free night (without the 1 year old) since...well, since frank played philly 12 days ago...still, fired up. Gonna have to think twice about that 7th beer, gonna need to provide a coherent setlist.

Hope it's a little different than philly...but since everything sounds good i'm sure it'll be great. i'm really just blabbing on without providing anything of worth, but at least now this thread will be findable...

see yall there!

We were just talking with Rich on Monday and he said that Chicago is one of the places he feels is most non-Pixies-FB friendly, so I'm sure you'll have a great show. Plus I was listening to Double Door 2003 yesterday and it sounded terrific.

Have a great time!

"non-Pixies-FB friendly"?

What does that mean? The Pixies sold out 5 shows at the very large Aragon last year. Frank Black had his first ever solo sellout at the Vic Theatre here in 1993, I was there. He used to always play two nights while in town, as he did last time at the metro.

The only thing about FB in Chitown, is that he usually plays a good, but shorter set. He doesn't seem to take as many chances, but that's typical of a lot of bands. They seem to be slightly spooked by the non-dancing, intense Chicago audiences that just sit there and stare.

I'm sure tonight's soldout show will be a lot of fun. My friends and I are psyched that Frank's returning to the Metro. It might be the best venue in town to really see and hear a band (second only to the Empty Bottle).

I believe it means Frank on his own or with the Catholics sells alot of tickets in Chicago (and the audience appreciates more than just Where is My Mind?)

Didn't play either 2 weeks ago...from new album only Barleycorn, I'm in Pittsburgh and My Terrible Ways. Oh, and Raider Man. Maybe the band has learned 1 or 2 more since? I would have no idea how long it takes to teach good musicians a new song...?

Heh, that's a good question, I suppose I was not very clear.

I meant Chicago is purportedly very enthusiastic for FB without him having to be backed by the Pixies. Not to say that the Pixies have a bad time there or that there is a preference for FB solo, just that FB with the Catholics/solo seems to get a good reaction in Chicago compared to other places where people are out to see the "Pixies legend" more.

Who knows if that was any more clear...

Just got back home. Missed the solo acoustic prior to the band. Opened with Remake/Remodel. Will try to post a more complete setlist tomorrow. Just want to say That Burnt Out Rock 'n Roll is fucking amazing.
Plus it was by far and away the best Six-Sixty-Six I've ever heard.

goodnight.

Longtime patron here . . . I've seen Frank in Chicago and Wisconsin every chance I've had over the last 17 years, and that includes some monstrous sets at the Metro. So I'm sad to say I thought last night's performance was a real dud. Frank has looked and sounded larger than life on that Metro stage, and last night didn't come close to measuring up to his high standard. The band was surprisingly sub-par: the lead was average at best; and EDF (whom I admire quite a bit) just seemed to be going through the motions. I understand Frank's sound is evolving away from the ROCK and the seductively chunky chordage of the past, but I held out hope there would be some of the old spark. And Frank gave it a go, straining hard on some vocals, but the band was not doing him any favors (save for the drummer, who seemed to be giving his all). I was disappointed in particular by flaccid versions of two old Catholics numbers (All My Ghosts and Suffering) which plodded along listlessly, without EDF even trying to deliver any of the Entwistle-style runs on the latter. Again, I'm not knocking the new direction Frank has headed, but if you're throwing some of the back catalog into the mix, do it justice. In general, it seemed like a half-hearted, small-town Wednesday night show and that doesn't cut it in Chicago when you're charging 25 dolla at the door.

OK, how happy am I?

Near as I can remember, the acoustic set was:
Holiday Song
California Bound
Cactus
Two Reelers
and two more. Like I Said, near as I can remember.

The tape at the bottom is covering the name "joy," which obviously stands for Sing For Joy. I'll let you all figure out the rest.

OK. That was a sweet show.

But I'm an idiot. Got a bite/some beers before, walked around near the Metro to have a "smoke" and optimize my buzz. My sister used to live right next to Wrigley Field, so I know the area and have no excuses. But my sense of direction is so poor that I basically walked around 3 sides of the stadium instead of just 1 and ended up missing the first 2 songs! What a fool. Also...Damn you Punctual Frank!

So I'll have to go with FreqOGlow on the 1st two. Otherwise, the full set list was:

SOLO ACOUSTIC
(Holiday Song)
(California Bound)
Cactus
Water Song
Two Reelers
Wave of Mutilation
Los Angeles

FULL BAND
Remake/Remodel
Living on Soul
Bullet
I'll Be Blue
Black Rider
Ten Percenter
I Burn Today
I'm Not Dead (I'm in Pittsburgh)
The Swimmer
Gyaneshwar
Suffering
Burnt Out Rock & Roll
All Around the World
All My Ghosts
Johnny Barleycorn
My Terrible Ways
Raider Man
Horrible Day
Dead Man's Curve
Six-Sixty-Six
Nadine
Sing For Joy (encore)

Highlight: Suffering. Eternal Fields, you are way off on this one. It was insane. Frank was way into it. I just think this song is a notch and a half higher on the intensity level than any other. My neck muscles all bunched up and I felt like grey matter might be coming out of my eyes. It was awesome. Not only do I love this song, it was my favorite rendition of it I have seen.

Other highlights: Two Reelers, Gyaneshwar, Nadine, Sing For Joy. Nadine is not usually one of my favorites, but it was really strong. Sing For Joy is a classic. If someone asked me what FB sounded like, I'd probably play them this song.

I'd rather hear songs from the catalog than covers/new songs, I just don't enjoy them as much when I'm not familiar with them. That said, I really like Gyaneshwar. And Dead Man's Curve is excellent (3rd time I've heard it now, so I guess it's becoming pretty familiar)

During Wave of Mutilation Frank would lean in and deliver a low "Tzaaaahh" right before each time he sang the line "Wave of Mutilation". That was neat/funny/cool

Frank is definitely engaging in more banter. After he introduced the band, there was applause, then nothing happened for a little while as they got ready. Frank then asked "Do you like how I have this part of the show worked out? The akward silence before we start?" That cracked me up. Then he said "We're going to play rock music now." It wasn't until today that i realized he should have played "Rock Music" from Bossanova right then. Oh well

I thought the band sounded very good. I don't have Oddballs and so I don't know Remake/Remodel. Still, it was rockin', and I already said I don't like them as much when I'm not familiar. So, well done, band

I caught EDF smiling during I'll Burn Today. No doubt about it. There was also a half-smile during Six-Sixty-Six. Then early during Nadine he went absolutely wild and swayed slightly back and forth. Dude, chill out!

I stood on EDF's side and one of the cymbals blocked my view of Billy Block. So I couldn't really tell, but at times when I caught glimpses he seemed to have a "tough guy/game face" on. I hope it's not true, I like the smiles!

Late in the show a clearly drunk but seemingly normal individual was really into it and threw his empty beer cup onstage. Way to go, man! I'm sure they were impressed.

That's about all I got. Thanks a lot Frank & band. I'm sad because I don't know when i'll see ya next...
