Frank Black criticises new Pixies documentary 'They manipulated the whole thing' claims frontman frontman Frank Black has criticised a new documentary on the band's 2004 tour, calling it "exaggerated" and the filmmakers "naïve".
The film, 'loudQUIETloud', was premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival yesterday (August 22).
Speaking to The Guardian, Black said: "I've got nothing against the film or the film-makers, but they manipulated the whole thing. They wanted a story, and that story became this tension within the band, how awful we got along."
He also criticised the directors, Steven Cantor and Matthew Galkin, saying: "They were naïve, like a lot of people who don't understand how rock bands are when they go on tour.
"I guess they expected us to be like The Monkees, always up to mischief. But we're boring, you know. And touring is boring. You just sit around not talking to each other."
However, Black, known as Black Francis in Pixies' heyday, has also admitted that the conflict captured in the video is a reality for the band. He said: "The movie as it stands is basically truthful, even though it's exaggerated." © IPC MEDIA 1996-2006 |

I haven't seen that documentary yet but in the end isn't what the Pixies are all about? This tension between a man and a woman which is the gospel of the Pixies and to a larger extent, Mankind.
Love on and especially YOU.

I think when you look at what the documentary actually shows, it's not as exaggerated... I think when you try to cram a whole year of footage into 90 minutes or so, anything can seem a bit exaggerated...
I've talked to the producers of the doc at length, and I can honestly say they have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for Charles, Joey, Kim, and David. |

All respect to Frank but, I think he doesn't want people to know that it was as bad as it really was. Especially because it is alot better now. The stories I heard about the Pixies even before ANY documentaries DID INCLUDE this "Tension" in the band, which I agree might be somewhat embarrassing for him 15 years later. But still, it's kind of like asking John Lyden on his take of the Sex Pistols. He was jaded to begin with, so you just gotta take his interpretations with a grain of salt. I would bet that Kim's take on this, or Dave and Joey's differs from Frank's. And that's ok, I think some of this tension is responsible for shaping the sounds we know and love. The pull of all four members AGAINST each other made some great albums.
AND... because of the things cobain said about the Pixies, it kind of caused ALOT of people to go dig up this band that was already broke up. They deserved reuinion tour sized crowds way back in Surfer Rosa days, but now with ALL THESE NEW FANS, No, I wouldn't wanna rehash old stories about tension to millions of new fans. Come to think of it there might even have been the possibility that Frank thought that the fights that The Pixies had way back in the day were exaggerated as well.
...And if I'm right, the urban plight is not the problem. |
