I'll try to do you one better, and include a recording sometime early next week. At the very least, I'll post a setlist and mini-review on Sunday morning, the day after the show.

This should be a fantasic show. The underground is like a small basement below this big old dancehall. I think max capacity is about 300 people. I'm so stoked! I'm also going to try to get a recording of the show. |

No huge surprises tonight. I'll post a setlist when I get a chance to listen back to the tape. And I'll have the show itself available in a few days. I'm in Omaha tonight, and don't drive back to Denver until Monday, and I'll try to get the show up Tuesday or Wednesday after work. Sorry for the delay.
Of note was the end of Where Is My Mind. Frank seemed to be in a foul mood, and got really annoyed with all the kids who only reacted to his Pixies tunes. So at the end of WIMM, he rolled his eyes and shook his head and dragged out the end of the song several extra bars, seemingly to mock these kids. I love Frank when he gets pissed at fans. Setlist to come ...

Here is the setlist for tonight's show. He did 31 songs, if you count Bullet, which was aborted almost right away. I've included some notes with the setlist, and some other impressions at the end. I'm tired, but I wanted to get this written down while it's fresh.
Bullet (aborted very early in song, when guitar strap came off) Holiday Song Raider Man Czar (let people know midway through song that it was about John Denver) Living on Soul (it was hard to tell where Czar ended and this one began) Suffering Fitzgerald Wave of Mutilation (the new way -- where he seems to say "mutilationce" and the melody has changed almost completely) Humboldt County Massacre The Swimmer Headache (aborted after maybe 3/4, because he couldn't seem to find the right chord on his guitar) Two Reelers (this song is amazing to watch live, the way his hands fly up the neck of his guitar, and he really attacked it tonight) Cactus (T-R-E-X in the middle) Where Is My Mind (he got disgusted with the extremely positive reaction to this one, which he is clearly tired of -- so why does he still play it??? -- and rolled his eyes and shook his head while he walked off to drink some water) Dead Man's Curve (he really screamed on this one, seemingly still worked up about people loving the previous song) Nadine (on my screamed-out request, I might add :) ) I'll Be Blue California Bound (his falsetto was nearly painful to listen to) I've Seen Your Picture My Terrible Ways (next week is the annivesary of Hurricane Katrina, where this song came from, but he didn't say anything about it) Horrible Day Massif Central (said he forgot the last verse) Kicked in the Taco (by request; took him awhile to get it started; musta been awhile since he tried it) I Burn Today (stopped after a couple bars and said he had to pull his jeans up; the guy has clearly lost a lot of weight) (He stopped here and gave a videotaper a hard time for the "recording now" light on the front of his camera. He ragged on the guy for about a minute, telling him to stick a piece of tape or gum over that light becase there's no way he's going to look at the guy's camera if it's annoying him like that. The crowd loved it. Couldn't see if the guy kept taping.) Calistan (by request) Big Red Mr. Grieves The Water Adda Lee (He said he was about done and thanked the crowd for being attentative. He said standing-room crowds usually talk a lot and said he appreciated the attentiveness. And then he said he needed the crowd to be "extra-extra quiet now" because the next song was an "very serious song.") Song of the Shrimp (he dragged out the Papa Papa Papa Papa part a couple times to ridiculous lengths. My voice-activated recorder even stopped because the place was so silent and he was stopping and starting between "Papas.") Los Angeles Six Sixty-Six (a capella)
Pretty good show. Early on, he was in a bad mood, and I wasn't a big fan of a lot of the songs in the first part of the show. But right around Where Is My Mind, he got really pissed off and then really put his soul into things. By the end, he seemed to have really come around and begun to appreciate the crowd, and the crowd was really into it toward the end. I found it interesting that he responded to several requests. He probably would have sung Nadine without my yelling it, but Kicked in the Taco was one that someone yelled, and he nodded, and he gave it his best go. He seemed rusty on it, but it was good. He also did Calistan after a guy yelled it.
He wore a black polo shirt with a pocket on the chest, blue jeans, and small, red-tinted glasses. About halfway through the show, the glasses were too much for him (I think because he was sweating so much), and he said, "It's time for a paradigm shift. Gotta take off the tough-guy glasses," and took them off.
The venue is kinda of a dump, in my opinion, though the sound was fine. It's tiny -- 350 people, I think -- and is in the basement of a social-hall complex in what used to be the Eastern European part of Omaha. My hosts said the Eastern Europeans settled in that part of Omaha in the 1800s, and have pretty much been replaced my a Mexican population, but the Sokol Hall complex remains. Lotsa Mexican food in the area, but I didn't get a chance for my tacos and beer before the show, because I was being fed filet mignon, crab and shrimp by my hosts.
The opening act was a guy named Kyle Harvey. I don't know anything about him, but I'm going to guess he's an Omaha guy who wants to be the next Connor Oberst of Bright Eyes. He was fine, but his emo act would have worn thin if he'd played many more songs. I think he did five or six.
I was really struck by how much weight Frank has lost. I'm not really sure why I care, but I thought it was worth noting, because it's really a significant amount.
Well, it's late, and I can't remember much else. I taped the show (the recording isn't half-bad, for a cassette voice recorder), and I'll get it up as soon as I can. It'll probably be a few days. I drove 550 miles today from Denver to Omaha, and I drive those same 550 miles Monday the other direction. Then I can hook up the tape deck to my iMac and sign up for a YouSendIt account.
Cheers, Cohen

Frank, if my impressions were wrong, please correct me, and I do apologize. And know that your art means a hell of a lot to me. Thanks for a great show. It was worth the 1,100 miles in a minivan. Wave if you see me on I-80.

Frank's playing "WIMM?" because he wants to, I would assume; nobody's forcing him to. If he was really sick of the more enthusiastic reaction to it over a lot of his other material, he wouldn't play it. What kind of artist would want to torture himself like that night after night? What, you think the venues are holding a gun to his head to play the big Pixies' songs? "Give them 'Wave of Mutilation' or we blow your brains out, pally!" I know it's often irritating to be surrounded by people who only want to hear the Pixies stuff, but that doesn't make "WIMM?" any less of a good song.
Oh, and any show that includes "Suffering" is a huge surprise, regardless if he played it the night before or not.

Frank- Thanks for making it out to the hinterland! I thought it was a great show- material from all over, which made the event even more amazing. Your songs have always been the back ground radiation for the last, what was it? 18 years?- what if having a shit job or working up art or making sense of it. So it was something else to see you make an appearance right here in my own backyard. Again thanks for coming out to the trenches and making it all a bit easier. FNetwise- y'all need to get a sense of humor. There was no ill will out there- if just to make a joke to try and stop people from popping a stroblight in your eye. See you know its humor when its done with a smile. And it was a dungeon. But what can you expect of omaha? That said sound and effort were amazing. A great show and a good time was had by all. Hey all, I was there, and at the end of WIMM Frank was just really into it-letting the song extend a bit at the end. He wasn't pissed at the crowd...if he were; I believe that he would have teased the pixies songs (like in SLC) instead of playing a full five of them.
Frank-thanks again for stopping at my truck and giving a handshake and autograph. (not to mention the great show) Keep the great new stuff coming! Been up on the Mountain, the Water, and Rabbit Hole are quickly becoming favorites. By the way, C#m has changed the way I play guitar.

This was an amazing show!!! Any chance to see Frank is a blessing, but in such a small venue as this with only about 300 people is really a dream come true. The sound was fantastic and his playing was so smooth, it looked effortless. I tried to record the show but couldn't get the recorder to work. The joke about the guy with the camcorder was I thought done jokingly. It seemed like Frank was enjoying himself and like the attentiveness of the crowd. I thought it was pretty great of Frank to play some requests also. Kicked in the Taco sounded great and what a treat! I waited around after the show cause I heard there was no side door out of the place and he had to walk back through to get out. Sure enough, here comes my hero and I got to shake his hand and tell him it was great set and then thanked him for 20 years of great music. He said thanks and took a few steps and then turned around and laughingly said, It's more like 18 and lets not be adding any more years to him than needed. What a perfect ending to a perfect night. Great show and got to meet my hero. Seriously though, Thanks for 18 years of great music Frank. I know alot of people love your music, but thank you for sharing it with us. There are a lot us who know you don't have to, but we really appreciate that you do! And thanks for still doing little intamate shows in out of the way places. I hope that you will come back to Omaha again someday. THANK YOU!!! |

It was a once and a lifetime show for me...
It was like: "The Dream Came True" as opposed to "The Dream is Over"
...all I need now is a decent recording to relive it over and over! |

I'll put up the show as soon as I can -- but it's likely to be Saturday before I get to it. And I still feel like a chump for misreading Frank at the end of Where Is My Mind. Imagine my surprise when he corrected me minutes later. (And I thought I was obsessive.)
Benji -- I have no idea was lossless means. Fill me in, and I'll do my best to comply.

Hey guys-
I absolutely loved the show. I was honored to have the opportunity to open the show for Frank Black.
Personally, I loved hearing stuff off of the past couple albums. I know that many of the young'n in attendance responded more to the Pixies tunes, as that is what they are familiar with. They could be doing alot worse things than listening to the Pixies ... I know thats what I was doing when I was their age.
Either way, thanks to Frank Black. You were amazing, and I hope that you come back to Omaha soon. We love having you. Maybe next time we can drive out to Scottsbluff and do some UFO sightseeing!
Coastline- sorry that you found my set to be a bit of a drag. I knew full well, going into this show, that it would be a hard audience to win over... but, couldn't pass up the opportunity. Quite a few people picked up copies of my album, so hopefully I have won a few new fans! Anyone interested, you can check out my tunes at:

Thanks Frank Black, and everyone take care...

I was at the show, too. Well worth the drive from Minneapolis. I saw Ween in the upstairs portion of the same venue in November. I think Frank put on a hell of a show. This is the 10th time I've seen him play, but the first time I've seen him solo. He's usually pretty reserved while playing, and towards the beginning I couldn't tell whether or not he was enjoying himself, but once he started talking a little bit, you could see he was having fun with it. I was standing right by the guy videotaping the show, and Frank seemed rather amused and tolerant of "Mr. YouTube" (as he referred to him). If he really was in a bad mood, I would have expected him to tell the guy to knock it off. Rather, Frank just told him to cover up the recording light so he didn't get self-conscious. And the whole "really really serious" Song Of The Shrimp just proved that his dry humor was out in full force. I've seen Frank play before an even smaller crowd before, and I know that the guy appreciates all his fans. I'm really glad he came out to Omaha to play. It had to feel a little nice after so many sold out Pixies shows, and festivals, etc. And, although I knew it wouldn't have happened, I humored the idea of him playing Pan American Highway only because he mentions Omaha in it. I can't wait to hear the recording, Coastline. (I also secretly hoped he'd play Coastline, too. But I'm far from disappointed with his setlist.)

Here's the show. So far, I've created just .m4a files, which I believe play only on iTunes. I'll try to make others as soon as I can. This was recorded with a cassette voice recorder and a lapel-clip microphone, and I don't have any equalizer software, so it's not professional quality, but I think it's very listenable.
The highlight might just be the one non-song track, which I've labeled "Hey Mr. YouTube." That's where he ragged on the videotaper. I'm still curious whether that's ever going to show up online. Oh, if somehow the album art transfers and you wonder what that awful pic is, it's the building where the show was. Frank played in the basement.

I think most people would be happy with mp3, but if you could produce a lossless flac copy, it would make some of us very happy. I think foobar can play .m4a files.
Thanks for these coastline.

coastline,
I was there too and i recorded this show with even better equiptment (a MD recorder capable of recording PCM and my 250 Audio Technica mic) and directly front of the speaker on the right hand side. Mine is a straight digital transfer... so if ya wanna hear it, gimme a buzz. |

I'd love to hear your recording of this show. My recording was decent, but nothing to write home about. I presume your superior microphone did a lot better job than my Radio Shack lapel clip-on. And I'm really curious whether Mr. YouTube will ever post his video -- and whether he had the balls to keep taping while Frank gave him shit. I wasn't standing very far away from him (but who was?), but I couldn't tell.
