Ok guys i'm in a bit of a pickle. Basically here's the situation. Im 18 so this year applied to go to University to study History. My first choice was Huddersfield and thier entry requirements as stated on thier website are 240/60 points and a C in A level. Unfortunately for me I managed to get a D in History A level and only 200 points overall. However I recieved a letter today saying that Huddersfield have confirmed my place. Obviously im very happy but also can't help but wonder why when I was pretty far of thier enty requirements. Anyway the problem is Im planning to defer a year but i'm paranoid that if I ring and tell them this they'll realise they made a mistake in accepting me and strike me off the list. Paranoid, yes, but I cant help but think that. Also do Uni's generally not like people deffering courses or is it no biggie?

Universites accept more than they can handle because they expect a certain amount to drop out and they get more money for it (I think) Also, maybe Huddersdield wasn't top of many other people's lists?
I know nothing about deferring, sorry. Why do you want to defer?

Well i'd like to get a bit of money under my belt to ease the pain of debt. Plus I just fancy working for a year, possibly travel. I've just done 7 years of academic studies on the trot. I'd like to experience the real world for a change now : )

Unis are funny like that, I have a friend who realised she didn't want to go to her first choice at all, and was really happy she didn't get the grades, thinking this meant she could now go to her second-choice university. Unfortunately, the one she didn't want to go to welcomed her with open arms despite not getting the grades and automatically accepted her, causing her to lose her place at her preferred choice. Now she's had to drop out in her first year and reapply - hopefully next year will be better as she's where she actually wants to be. |

When I went to university first time round I was really really short of the grades. If they won't let you defer just apply next year through clearing. Somewhere will take you.
Why on earth would you want to live in Huddersfield though?
And it's 'their' by the way. A massive part of uni life is essay writing and you should really know by now that the I before E except after C rule is utter nonsense. |

Haha yes "their" is one of those words i've always spelt wrong. Personally I like Huddersfield, practically all of my family are from there and it's just a really nice place. I dont think i'll need to go through clearing, if Huddersfield don't accept me defering then i'll just re-apply next year. Just it's nice to kinda have it sorted out and not have to worry about going through the application process all over again.

If Huddersfield have told you you're accepted, then you're accepted. Universities have a standard offer, then a clearing offer. They received your results on Monday and although you didn't match your original offer, you matched their clearing offer. So, if Huddersfield are your firm acceptance, you have your place there, and they are legally obliged to give it you. If they've offered you the place, they can't retract.
Deferal is at the discretion of the university, but is generally absolutely no problem at all. Ring the university, they'll tell you for sure, but I very much doubt there'll be a problem.
toeknee, your friend could've gone to her second-choice if she wished, it's no big deal to release someone from their first choice.

I'm pretty sure the place at her second-choice was given to someone else on account of her first-choice accepting her...so there was nothing she could do. |

I think this is the important question here.

Depends on the course/institution. If it's massively over-subscribed, then you're right, but if not these things are easier to do than most people expect.

They definitely havent made a 'mistake'. And deferring will be no hassle. Stop being so paranoid. Lay off the disco biscuits.

Yer thanks for the support/help guys. I rang today and there was no problem with me defering, although they did try and talk me out of it. And Huddersfields not so bad, it's a lot nicer than other towns that are similar in size. Plus like I say a lot of my family live close by so if things get desperate I can always shack up there. But thanks again.
