| Anybody listen to XTC much? I got into them about a year ago when I read a random blurb, maybe here, about how great Skylarking is, so I checked it out - Wow!! Anyway I started picking up their other releases, so far I've got Drums and Wires, White Music, English Settlement, Oranges and Lemons, and besides Skylarking, my two other favorites: Black Sea (amazing) and Dukes of the Stratosphere. What's the deal with these guys? They're like the great lost band of the eighties. To me I hear Talking Heads and Beach Boys served over Beatles (65-69) on crack. They're like the Beatles of the eighties sans the fame. The only people I meet who've heard of them are the ones who say, "Oh, yeah, I think I've heard that" when I play "Dear God" for them. Keep in mind I'm American, and I know there's a lot of UK folks on this site, so I assume they're more widely known over there. I'm hooked though. Anyone else? Anyone know of any other good, under-the-radar-bands that deserve some more appreciation? |

| xtc the band is great. i don't think they got their props at the time in the US partly b/c they were canadian and partly when idie/alternative music was so fragmented that it was luck of the draw if you saw the on 120 minutes or in the record store or knew of someone that had their recordings. i think it was a lot like that for a lot of bands back then including the pixies. |

XTC aren't Canadian. They're from Swindon in the UK. And I always thought they enjoyed pretty good success in the US, especially with "Dear God". |

Sorry El Loco, but before I could sign up, Indie 101 was cut from my university's course catalog in order to buy a new Buick for the dean. Plus too many football players were taking it as a "skate" class. Just after a university security guard’s boot connected with the instructor's ass, as he flew out the Admin office's door into the street, he reportedly was heard to scream "What about XTC!! Remember X...t...c..." But it was too late. His head landed under the wheels of the Smash Mouth tour bus as they pulled in to campus for a weekend show. He was killed instantly. That weekend the campus radio station played Respectable Street exactly once in his honor, before ceremoniously burning every XTC record in the studio.
We all went on after that. I chalked it up to bad luck. A couple years after the ill fated Indie 101 instructor's death, an explosive and unpublished essay was found in his old office, where he postulated his theory that XTC was, in fact, not an indie band. His primary evidence for this being their record label, Virgin Records, Marketed by RSO and Polygram. Rumor has it he had intended to resign in disgrace anyway. Irony? Poetic Justice? Coincidence? The world may never know.

| He's not really "lesser known", but I just caught Adrian Belew a couple nights ago in Jacksonville, FL and the place was maybe 1/3 full. I can't explain that. The music scene in Jacksonville blows. Anywho, it was a great show. I pretty much leaned on the stage all night, met the band and Adrian afterwards. He's touring with a brother and sister, 19 and 20 respectivly, and they were pretty amazing. Anybody have his new albums? They're incredible. |

I remember Adrian B. but it's been a while since i have
XTC is from the UK?? That shows how much I know. As far as success in the US i think they were always acclaimed, but much like the Pixies were definately overshawed by the Hair metal/glam metal bands. so out of my highschool of 3,000+ I would say 200 knew of XTC the rest were into hair bands or rap.
But in terms of "alternative" circles they are popular and well known. |

Well, I can't speak much for the music scene in the 80's - I'm 25. I can tell you from my own experience, I've had to turn over stone after stone to get to where I am now as far as musical appreciation. It's not going to just land in your lap. Nine times out of ten, I end up back tracking musical influences. For example, I like many others, found Frank and Pixies only because of Kurt Cobain's constant referal. I will say that if you walk around and ask the avarage joe who Adrian Belew is, they won't know, and if you ask who Frank Black is,they won't know either. But if you ask if they've heard any of the bands Adrian has played with, odds are real good they've heard 'em (Talking Heads, Zappa, NIN, and if you look hard, King Crimson).
Anyway, I didn't grow up in a high school where even five people knew who the hell XTC was. I can say with confidence that the screaming majority of people my age has no clue who XTC is, which is a goddamn crying shame. |

Five foot nine actually with brown hair, hazel eyes, 180lbs and I like sunsets, swimming with dolphins and long walks on the beach if you must know.
For those who like FB's new direction, you should check out Mojave 3. They were originally a shoegazer band called Slowdive (good stuff as well) but evolved into Mojave 3 and have a alt-country type sound with very beautiful female vocals courtesy of Rachel Goswell.
It's crack. It's great. It gets you really high. |
