Hmmm... I presume other discs work no problem in your laptop?

They all work fine on it. It could have been a dodgy batch of Country Life in the shop. But there has to be some way of fixing it.

s_wrenn, I've had similar problems with some new CDs, two in particular on Blue Note and the Verve label and one used but newish CD on WB. I'm starting to think it's another protection scheme.
One CD I was able to copy and then it never worked again so I ripped the copy.
DON'T try Brasso, not only does it have the worst of smells and feel like fish-oil, it just scratches. Maybe if you had more time on this earth the abrasives would wear down and leave a polished surface?
One of my local used CD stores (the Pixies themed Planet of Sound) has a disc polisher and said a number of months ago they would run some CDs through for the cost of materials.
I've been planning to do this for a few weeks, I will try to get down there and I will let you know if I have any success.
You might try to rip it at low speed. |

Supposedly hair gel works better than any of the known home remedies...
I thought protection as well, but I can't think of a mechanism that could or would intentionally scratch a CD being ripped...

I thought that it might have something to do with the fact that it's a HDCD CD, but all my other Roxy Music records are HDCD CDs and there's no problem with them. Anyway Microsoft owns the company that developed HDCD technology, so i would presume that a Mircosoft piece of kit would work on Windows(...?) I also started to think it was a protection scheme.
The only idea i came up with was to connect my old discman through the line-out slot to my laptop or dictaphone and record it that way. But the idea feels a bit Frankenstein-ish
Hair gel? Really? If it comes down to it, i'll slap some wet-look on there.

I had a similar problem with my Bob Dylan - NASHVILLE SKYLINE cd. It was a combo SACD/CD and wouldn't work at all on my computer, despite BLONDE ON BLONDE in the same format working.

Damn! What's the point of creating a Franken-Copy (I may dub the copy 'Franken-Ferry') if no one gets drown in the process.

Mechanism, oh you want REAL terrors not just paranoid conspiracy theories! A normal CD player will not spin a CD to 52X.
Did you see the show The Mythbusters where they exposed a CD to a microwave? |

I really like the show but there hasn't been a new episode shown in a long time and there are very few I can watch twice.
I like the 'stache too, it reminds me of the Calgary Flames hockey player Lanny MacDonald.

I nearly got one before getting my iriver. I didn't hear about those problems, and I read quite a few buyer feedbacks, but I couldn't say for sure.
Go with iriver though.
I'd walk her everyday, into a shady place

Your face is gay.
My Franken-Ferry was a total disaster. It sounded like an abused vinyl record.
Okay, does anyone know of a way to upload music from Minidiscs to a pc that doesn't involve transfering it in realtime? Or is that the only way?

I know some guys who have minidiscs and you can transfer it in that Atrac or whatever it's called and convert it.
Let me think...they said it was the latest version of some software, is it Sonic Stage?
This is from Wikipedia
As of version 3.4, an intermediate update mostly for Hi-MD users, some of the above restrictions have been relaxed. SonicStage 3.4 allows tracks recorded via digital/analogue inputs on Hi-MD devices to be transferred back in WAV format. Also, files in Sony's proprietary ATRAC format can now be converted to WAV. |

Anyone have any favorite cell phones? I've been thinking of replacing my super-old fashioned Nokia with something new: maybe something that I can check my email on. Don't REALLY need all the PDA stuff, but if there is a really good phone with those features, I'd get it. It seems like most new phones have some kind of drawback based on a lot of the reviews I've read, and I don't want to get a new phone with cool features and then find out that my calls all drop and such. I've got Cingular, btw.

I just bought these and they sound delicious. Retail is $279 but I got a deal because of where I work. I highly recommend them. These are the best speakers I've ever owned and I'm relistening to albums because it makes the music sound so much more crisp and vivid.

I've been thinking about getting one of these:
My brother has one, and I think it's like 20gb, and more than 24-hour battery life for the same price as a 4gb ipod nano. Obviously much better. You can't watch videos or look at pictures, but who needs that anyway?
btw, sorry the pic's so big, i couldn't find any smaller.

I couldn't get by with an MP3 player with less than 30 GB. I bought a 60 GB video iPod and love it. Your music collection will never stop growing, which is why I'm glad Apple has a 60 GB. Also I don't compress MP3s any lower than 192 kbps. Sometimes I go to 256 kbps. Anyone who loves music should be imprisoned for compressing their MP3 collections at 128 kbps. Pass that along to your children: 128 kbps is bad.

ProverbialCereal is a budding audiophile. First he buys a better pair of speaker, then one day he finds a high-end stereo shop where they have Martin & Logan's or B & W's
So long pay checks, hello Sound & Vision and AudioVideo Interiors subscriptions.
Then he falls in love with a vintage set of Tannoy's, powered by vintage McIntosh and he knows for certain now that things will never be the same again.
The clear superiority he hears in Kevlar impregnated drivers, the harmonic clarity of NOS RCA, he stops listening to CDs altogether spinning only his glass turntable, buying and matching new phono preamps for a dozen cartridges, each with its own personality. As $60,000 speakers are not out of the realm of the possible, the madness takes over his soul.
Godspeed Derek. |

With that logic, why stop at 256? Why don't you go lossless? |

haha. Is that really what my future holds?
Well, some songs sound like ass at 128 kbps. There can be a big difference between 128 and 256 is all I'm saying. You have to draw the line somewhere as far as space on your MP3 player. I'd probably have to delete stuff if I used Apple Lossless.

I just sold my PSP on ebay, and I'm going to buy the 20gb Creative Zen Touch. I was thinking of buying the newer 30gb one, but it's $80 more, half the battery life, and I don't think I could even fill up 20gb!
