This is sort of a poll here. When (or if) the pixies release their next album, do ya think they will go with the creative freedom of a indie label(SpinArt,Artemis) or the national distribution and big money world of major?, i personally think the latter because everybody knows they all have the burning desire to be rock superstars, or in Kims case, feel the glory again. Or do you think they could be rock superstars at their age and this late in the game? Reply if you feel motivated

As veterans with attorneys I can't imagine how they would involve themselves in a contract that wasn't completely in their favour.

My guess is they have the means and the will to record the album on their own terms, long before they would ever approach a label. With Kim's reservations it would never see the light of day if they didn't believe in it.

And then they could sell it directly on eBay, through this website or in the back of a comic book and it would still be a gold record.

Once they actually had a product every label in the world would be the drooling, slobbering whores they already are.

My understanding is that distribution is similar for SpinArt and Sony, any record store can get any CD.

True, i went into an FYE in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina and found some Cds on labels i never heard of. And of course there's also MP3s that can be ungodly easily reproduced with out any need for materials, presses and money. So if they signed to an independent label , they would still be able to have a gold record and maybe a top 10 postion on the Top Internet Albums chart with less money behind them. And maybe with the profits from the first CDs more could be put into manufactureing and it could reach the top 10 on the 200, or maybe theyll sign to an independent with benifits like Epitapb, look at what they did with Rancid and the Offspring! So your right there's no reason to enter a contract that did not favor them completely when they could just as easily sell records on an independent thanks to new technology. I came up with this because I know that when/if they do release an album Atlantic (which bought out their original US label Elektra in 2004), will pull out all the stops to try to get them to rejoin the family cause they know it will sell. This is a moral question to see what everybody on here thinks they will do in this situation. I think hammerhands put up a pretty good side and they will probably either sign with the independent or negotiate the hell out of a major, if they release a new album. Well have to wait.

I think they'll probably go back to 4AD if they do, they found some success there, as did early Frank Black solo stuff and the Breeders. Couldn't see a Pixies record coming out on Cooking Vinyl, though

4AD is in the US now, too, because they have an office in Los Angeles and I recieved further proof of this when i turned around "Doolittle" at said FYE and did not see that little weird globe thing with the red mountain on the back that Elektra used during the time that Doolittle was released and did not see anything about them in the copyright statement. That was a reissue, i dont think 4ad is gonna need any US label help when they release the next Pixies album, so their covered if they go back to 4AD. If they release another album.

Well, i see them going to same route that FB goes - owning the masters and licensing out the record to a label. For those who don't know what this means...

Generally, bands record for labels, and the label owns the actual tapes/hard disc that the band recorded. This is then pressed, sold, etc. What FB does is that he owns the master tapes, and then licenses a label (like Cooking Vinyl, SpinArt, Back Porch, etc) to release the record for x ammount of time. After that time, he retains control of his music. I beleive the first record to be handled this way was the FRANK BLACK AND THE CATHOLICS s/t brown album. This makes sense for a few reasons for the Pixies:

1) Because they have music released on another label (4AD/Elektra), if ever the time came to release a new compilation covering tracks from both periods (pre/post reunion), the licensing issues would be far simpler, since they would only have to deal with one unit (4AD/Elektra) and themselves.

2) Because this way, they structure their own deal with the indie label, and they will make more money per disc, while still having the excellent distribution of a label like SpinArt or Cooking Vinyl. Basically, they get to run their own label while being distributed by an indie.

3) This also means that they don't get an advance (money up front) to record/tour, but this is pretty much how the reunion went, and i don't see them really needing the label's financial support. The Pixies could book themselves without much hassle in many places in the USA/Europe. The good part of not getting an advance is not having to owe the label to pay it back.

So, essentially, once recording costs are covered, and the license sold to a label, the Pixies don't have to pay anyone anything.

Elektra have nothing to do with the Pixies now. Everything is done via the Beggars Group US office in NY.

Just thought I'd add my 2p in there!

Hi Jo, that's funny, I noticed while looking for Pixies sites ages ago that the Elektra link was dead, and that Beggars, to my surprize, had a Pixies page.
