The other day I was having a conversation with someone about the 'chav phenomenon' which ended up turning into a pretty nasty argument and I was just wondering what you guys think. Basically he was saying that Chavs and Scallies are no worse now than mischevious youths have ever been but have grown notoriety because they are now easily identifiable thanks to media coverage. He also said that the term chav was a form of class snobbery. I believe however that the current state of affairs in this country is ridiculous. Everyday I read in the paper about someone getting beaten to death or something equally horrific by a gang of twats who end up with an 18 month prison sentence. Everywhere you go there are gangs of kids trying to initimidate innocent people who are doing nothing but going about their daily business, and then battering them to death if they respond. Im staying at my mum and dads at the moment an they live in a fairly affluent area, yet still when I walk to the paper to get a pint of milk I find myself getting abused and offered out by gangs of twelve year olds. Obviously I am not saying that every young person behaves in this manner, Im only twenty myself, but it does seem to me like the vast majority of todays youth have no respect for anyone or anything. And Im fucking sick of it. I think we need to be more draconian with these little shits and pack them off to boot camp. I might sound like a lunatic Daily Mail reader but thats the way I feel about the situation. Thoughts...

I'm twenty too, and i find myself complaining about young(er) people being little fuckers too. The majority of the people i know have been assaulted on the streets by gangs of scumbags, including myself(more than once) I get the feeling that it's one of those issues that the government feels they can solve by doing relatively nothing and hoping the problem solves itself (over here anyway, can't really comment on the UK) But when it comes to younger offenders, the blame is on the parents. They let them go and do whatever they like, and if they get in trouble, they'll always defend their little brat. The whole thing seems futile

Whenever I visit the BBC website I'm shocked at what I read. Tell me please, when a nation loses its culture, just how does it get it back? So many people complain about America but our streets are nothing like that. Yes, we have the guns and the murder rate, but at least Americans are mostly killing those known to themselves. Mass abuse of strangers seems like a deeper and broader problem. Makes me genuinely concerned for the future of the West and, frankly, causes me to discount the opinions of the European street on just what should be done about the larger problems of the world. If more Americans knew more about what is going on in much of Europe, I think they'd be a bit slower to condemn their own country. I don't mean for this to be an us vs. them rant, for I sincerely worry about what is happening to the mother ship, but really, sometimes I wonder whether what you're seeing is the fate of a people that makes a priority of confiscating guns while otherwise allowing standards to lapse.

It seems worse now than ever, but do we have any worthy stats to prove it? The decline of (practically death of actually) the family unit is very probably largely to blame.
Less and less people are truly fit to bring other humans into this world. Might be a good thing that the population is in decline.

Why not check out Chavscum for fun such as 'Chav of the Month', 'Chav or Not?' and 'How to spot a chav?'.
I'm wandering wether or not I should do my Sociology coursework on 'The effect of chav culture on society' or something like that. Might be interesting to do.

Most of those types over here are just plain annoying more than anything else. And thanks pixiestu, I found the chavscum link to be worth a few laughs...

Boy Racer absolutely has to be the name of shitty emo band. In fact, I think there should be a "Making the Band" style reality show wherein they create a emo band called Boy Racer. Tell me you wouldn't watch that.
For winning todays sad puppy dog face challenge, you get a day in a salon to have your hair expertly styled by the guy who does hair and make up for Dashboard Confessional!
Sorry to go off topic. Chavs are really annoying, though we don't call them that here (I think we just call them "annoying"). The gang beatings and swarmings happen here as well, though on a smaller scale, I imagine.

In Scotland they're called neds. You can check them out on www.glasgowsurvival.co.uk It's quite amusing the words "chav" and "ned". If im not mistaken they stand for "Council House And Violence" and "Non Educated Delinquent".
To me the situation is quite peculiar, of course the decline of the nuclear family is a massive reason why the problem is so widespread. Like Llama I don't know of any figures but I know that Glasgow is one of the worst cities in Europe for violence and crime (according to papers). Just seems that with family not having a leading role, where are people to look for guidance, role models and education? Media has a role to play too, switch on the telly and have a look at the culture. Can't remember who said it but was a good quote, "People are no longer famous because they are important, they are important because they are famous". I think that statement is true with our 'british' culture to an extent. Seems people are obsessed to get to B without going through A, meaning that the only self improvement happening is on a financial and standard of living level, rather than self betterment in terms of education and knowledge. Prime examples of this are the Gallagher brothers of Oasis and the chav guy who won the lottery.
Don't get me wrong, Im not laying the problem on to oasis and the money bags chav(!), I know it goes far deeper than that, especially with the government hiding from the problem. It just seems that they personify the 'new' culture we live in.
On the argument about class snobbery and that the situation is the same as ever, well maybe it is class snobbery, but it depends how you define social class. Is class snobbery worse than class violence? Works both ways. I don't know if the situation is worse than ever, youths do rebel at anything, I wasnt a 20 something in the 80's or 90's so I couldn't compare what it was like then to now. However, the idea of being a punk is a far more romantic concept than being a chav! |

Knackers I suppose people call them. Shiny-tracksuit wearing young lads/young ones who shout their business all over the street, usually about getting a 'deal' or something about not looking after the baby. And wear Nike shoes to make out they're not poor. "He-are you, wha' are y'lookin' ah?!" "Youngfella!!"

What i find strange about that site is that they have a PSP Portal. Is anyone going to look this site up on their PSP in public wifi spot? No, because it'll be robbed off them. Which would be ironic, no?
The music for the epilepsy thing makes me laugh every time.
When you look up "scumbag" in wiki you are brought to "scanger"
Here's something from wiki's scanger page that might come in useful if you're away from home:
Skangers' international counterparts Chav (England) Dres (Polish subculture) (Poland) Ned (Scotland) White Trash (United States) Skid (Canada) Bogan (Australia and NZ) Ah beng (Singapore/Malaysia) Harry (Norway) Geezies (Kuwait) Coatti (Rome, Italy)

Tht documentary was sickening. It makes you realise that despite all the positive reports of England fans behaviour at the world cup, hooliganism is never far from the surface, poised to errupt at the slighest provocation. Those bellends are a disgrace to this country and a disgrace to the greatest game on the planet.

I was actually thinking about Chavs today. I was wondering if the term would ever be more accepted in a sociological discussion. Sort of in the way "bourgeois" or "blue collar", etc, are used.
I haven't heard "Skid" used in Canada, but here in Nova Scotia we use "Skiv".

I suspect "chav" is not yet decadal. More like semi-decadal. Unless those chav-guys embark upon mass killing they'll fall short of memorable definition. Mark that: kill or be as forgotten as your adolescence will be to everybody but you. Chav subculture is most likely just a pre-embodiment of the dystopia forseen by Burgess via "A Clockwork Orange". We still have the luxury of a wallow before we embrace our Alex writ broad. But the one with forebrain will expect the Alex, in step with the neighborhood Muhammad, but that's another matter which we are not yet mature enough to honestly discuss. Meanwhile we will content ourselves with disputes over precinct politics and what to do about teenage delinquency. A couple decades on our children will look back upon us as having lived in an age of discretion, if we're lucky.
