I've never done it before. Today's Mike's birthday and I'm trying to figure this out for him. Any tips? I seen a guy on the food network bbq a lobster, I'd like to try that. But if I do boil it, how long do I boil it for? Should I spice it up somehow? Or just garlic butter for dipping?
I'm lost, any tips?

lobster is one of those delicacies that deserves to stand on its own. i like it straight up boiled, with a little lemon butter for dipping.
besides, how can you enjoy their screams if you barbecue them?

apl...you are so right! If I had to choose I would rather be boiled to death than BBQ'd any day. |

well, some say it's just the air escaping from the shell at high pressures, but don't let em fool ya and spoil your fun.
not sue on the lemon-to-butter ratio, but way less lemon than butter. haven't tried it w/garlic, but my guess is that it might ruin the delicate flavor of the lobster. garlic kinda buids up on yer tastebuds and overpowers some things.
but i haven't ever tried it, so there you go. |

I can't believe the screams of millions of lobsters have fallen of deaf ears as far as C is concerned.
I'd walk her everyday, into a shady place

Why? I don't actually dig seafood, and I don't live on the coast. Where's all the Newfies when you need them ;)

I don't know how helpful this is but lobster thermidor is some seriously good food. That site is pretty good actually for general lobster stuff.
mmm lobster.

To be safe just boil it as the cooking method. I've done the grilling a few times and now am over the fright. I also fried them Puerto Nuevo style, which is damn good.

my favorite talk radio show played it as a bumper this morning, so I was "singing" it today too. I think I've traumatized our cats. |

Okay cool, boiling it is. Maybe I'll do a little bowl of lemon butter and a little bowl of garlic butter just because he digs garlic so much.
But do I have to do anything else? Its a whole lobster so do I have to gut anything? I really hope I don't.

That thermidor looks a wee bit labour intensive, but the other recipes do look promising.

I have no idea if this works, but if you don't want to hear the screams....I just read...
"Some say that you can 'hypnotize' a lobster by rubbing the top of its head or its abdomen, thereby pacifying it before boiling." |

I know tiring them out doesn't work, because every New Year's eve, we and our friends would each buy a live lobster and race them down our friends' hallway before we boiled em. and they still squealed.
( contrary to how it might seem, I do not enjoy animals' suffering. nor do I think they are screaming, but I'm sure they don't like being boiled one bit.) |

lobsters can't scream. it's just the seawater between the shell and meat vaporizing. |

Just wear an apron with nothing underneath while serving. He won't even notice if you fucked up the cooking.

Well everything was fantastic until he pulled the tail away from its body and all sorts of slimy greeny stuff flooded out.
He said it was delicious and he ate the tail and claws but threw out the middle body section. He didn't need the extra burger I had on standby so I guess it was good.
Thanks guys.

May I recomend "Consider the lobster" by David Foster Wallace - a nice essay collection with topic-relevant reflections on the morals of lobstercooking, as well as porn and Dostojevskij.
